My five year old is getting his second shot on Saturday and I'm wondering how he might feel. He didn't even have arm pain with Dose #1. Obviously every kid is different, just seeing how the side effects are!

I'm just curious if there is anyone in here with school age children in California, who are facing the possibility of having them kicked out of school if you don't give them the covid vaccine? I'm not looking for a debate. I'm curious to know what you plans are, if you are already planning for this possibility, etc.

I’m hopeful that essential workers will be able to get the vaccine soon, and this seems to include daycare/preschool teachers (along with K-12). My question is whether your preschool will be requiring teachers to get the vaccine and letting parents know once teachers are vaccinated. We are at a very small, Waldorf-inspired forest school and I’m afraid the 2 teachers may not get vaccinated since they are kind of Waldorf-y. (I am super pro-vaccine in general but we chose this school anyway since it’s just preschool and not true Waldorf). Do you think I can ask the teachers if they plan to get the vaccine or is that just inappropriate? I’m so stressed bc I really want them to get it but maybe no school can require it. The hospital I work at isn’t even requiring it so..?

Anyone else thinking/worrying about this?

My SIL is due soon with her first baby, and she told my in-laws that nobody (including them) would be allowed to visit the baby unless they are up-to-date on their Tdap, because she's worried about whooping cough. I understand first time mom worries, but it seems a little much to me to tell people nobody can visit without this vaccine first.

On a side note, I have two kids, and while I suggested my in-laws get the vaccine when they were born, I didn't force them or anyone else to do it. My in-laws declined, because they didn't think it was necessary, however with my SIL they are willing to do it. Not sure how I feel about her making these demands and everyone being willing to meet them without question.

Is this a normal request for people to make? She hasn't asked us about visiting, so I'm not sure if we're even invited, but I feel like she might have more demands concerning my kids and them being around school germs.

Have any of you gotten flu shots for yourself or kiddos from the pharmacy? I usually get it at work and the kids get it from their pediatrician but the pharmacy seems so much more convenient. I'm wondering if its too easy and if there ia a reason why its better to take them to their pediatrician for their flu shots

LO (3.75 years old) and I got our first flu shots this year. Mine was a few weeks ago. I had a moderate reaction: Fever, body aches and head ache for about 8 hours.

LO had her shot yesterday. She woke up last night vomiting. Google tells me this is a sign of allergic reaction. She doesn't have a fever (99.5°), and no one else at school has a stomach bug.

Did anyone else ever experience vomiting after the flu vaccine?? (I'm waiting to hear back from our doc)

ETA: I know many people don't have a reaction. I'm specially wondering about vomiting afterwards.

Quick Q. LO started daycare a month ago and is going for his 18 month checkup/shots Monday morning. We'll likely be done by 10am so in theory, I could take him to daycare. He is one that tends to get a bit of a fever/feel crappy after shots, although probably not on the same day. Also I wonder maybe it's traumatic to have him get shots and then leave him at school? IDK.

DS had his 2 month visit and received all the shots as well as the oral rotavirus vaccine. The next day he started showing specks of blood in his poop. I called the doctor right away and also read online about it. I found a thread on babycenter where many moms had the same thing but they were all told it was caused by a milk allergy. the nurse in my doctors office told me the same thing about a milk allergy since I am breastfeeding but that makes no sense. the oral vaccine has clearly irritated his gut. I was also worried it could be intussuception (sp?) but he doesnt look like he is in pain so they dont believe its that. Right now they are telling me to call the next time he poops if there is still specks of blood. I'm so annoyed at how they quickly blame a milk allergy and dont want to entertain the idea that the vaccine caused it. Has anyone experienced something similar?

My 15 month old has had a cold for about two weeks. Just clear snot, nothing crazy. We've been running the humidifier and thankfully it hasn't turned into croup (like it usually does). Anyhow, this cold caused me to delay shots at his 15 month appointment for earlier this week. But I decided to go ahead with the appointment anyways even though the cold is lingering. He got the polio and hep A vaccinations on Tuesday morning. The past 3 days, since receiving the shots, he's been acting like the world is ending. Throwing tantrums for no reason, wanting to be held all the time, and just unhappy in general. He's also having trouble sleeping. Waking up here and there but putting himself back to sleep (he usually sttn) and taking longer then normal to go to sleep. He is not teething (he has everything but the two year molars) and doesn't have a temp.

Has anyone experienced something like this? He's never reacted to vaccines like this before. They usually don't affect him much. We're heading back to the doctor tomorrow to ensure everything else is ok!

LO2 had her 12 month vaccines 9 days ago - aside from normal fussiness she had no reaction to note. This morning, she woke up with this on her leg. It is raised and hot. If it happened immediately after the shot, I would think it has normal, but more than a week later? The nurse at the ped's office was not super helpful - "bring her in if you think she needs to be seen or just keep an eye on it". Has anyone experienced this before?

We took my LO to an allergist because he has constant sinus infections. They did a scratch test and DH and I were shocked when he didn't react to a thing. The allergist wanted blood work done and the results came back that generally kids have 14 pneumonia titers and he only has 4.

So, we have to go get an specialized vax because even though he is vax'ed against pneumonia, LO isn't immuno-compromised which could be why LO is sick so often. We'll go back for another blood draw about a month after the vax to see if he has more titers.

Has anyone has experience with something like this?

No vax debates please! :-)

A bat got in our house, my daughter was asleep upstairs, I hid and my husband tried to shoo it out. He thought he did but it turns out it actually flew upstairs. After about five minutes of quiet and us deciding it flew out one of the windows I went up and closed both our bedroom door and my daughter's. My daughter never made a peep through all of this. A bit later went to bed and but the dog was agitated and it turned out the bat was in the curtains right by his crate. We left the room, my husband went back in and opened the windows, the best actually left this time.

I am about 99.9% sure the bat never got close enough to me to get me, my husband feels similarly. My daughter had about a five, maybe ten minute window where she could have been bit but it seems unlikely. What would you do? (For the record, the ped says check her for marks but don't worry about it and my doctor's office is closed. The ER won't give advice...)

I know vaccines do not cause autism; however, I cannot shake the annecdotes of parents who say their kids were under the weather during immunizations and then were later diagnosed with autism.

Tuesday I had a sore throat, Wednesday a runny nose. Today (Thurs) throat is better, nose still runs. I called the insurance nurses' hotline because baby is sneezing more and threw up three times since eating BM this morning. The nurse advised to feed him less in one sitting (sounds like she's addressing reflux) and to get him to his doctor within 3-4 hours.

His appointment is set this afternoon for a sick visit. His well visit is Monday and he is supposed to receive his first vaccines (2 mos). Let's say he is diagnosed as being sick I wonder if I should delay the vaccines. Have you had to make a similar decision?

Lots of Tdap questions today!

I just realized I never asked our nanny if she is up to date with Tdap. My guess is no, since when I mentioned this winter that she may want a flu shot, she basically said thanks but no thanks. It wasn't really a concern because my kids are fully vaccinated, and she didn't start with us until our youngest was 9 months.

However, we are due with #3 in the fall. And she'll continue to be our nanny. As in, even when I'm on maternity leave from work, she'll be here helping out, mostly with the other kids. I feel pretty strongly that she should have Tdap being around our newborn all the time.

How would you raise this? Did you or would you require your nanny to get the Tdap? I would pay for it, if that is a concern.

So I need to go back to work in 3 weeks and LO will be 2.5mo old. I only need childcare for the 7 weeks until summer break, so a SAHM friend offered to watch him. We were really happy about this plan for a couple reasons: friendship, more personal, use cloth diapers, not having to cancel/withdraw from daycare after the 7 weeks, half the price of daycare (!) etc. But there are logistical complications - we have to give her some baby gear, and pick up is at a different time & place almost every day.

However, I just realized last night that the current TDAP vaccine booster recommendation is to get it every 5 years or so, since it's less effective than previously thought. DH & grandparents got it, but I forgot to ask my friend, so I texted her about it last night asking her to check with her doctor. She has two kids, ages 5 and 7, so I figured/hoped it wouldn't be an issue.

She texted back this morning a long, supportive, kind text but said, "I understand your concern and I'll look into it, but I can't commit to a shot at this time. I'd rather talk with you about it on the phone. However, the bigger picture is, this has concerned me that I might not be able to provide the level of care you desire."

Uh oh. So there's a good chance it seems that she won't get the booster (even if she's out of date), and it raises the possibility that her kids aren't vaccinated. I know, I guess I should have asked earlier, I didn't realize. If her kids aren't vaxxed, that makes my decision clear, I'll do daycare. But what if her kids are fully up to date but she's not? Is this a deal breaker, for the 7 weeks? I know which way I'm leaning, but I'm an anxious overworrier so I have a hard time assessing true risk.

The alternative is daycare, which has fully vaxxed infants but who knows about the daycare workers. I don't think they're required to be up to date, either. So it might be equal risk. For double the cost, but less logistical issues.

When we went in for LO's 3 year appointment I asked if there was going to be shots and they said nope ... year 4 is going to be a lot and at the time the nurse said 5!

So we just had LO's 4 years appointment and I was preparing for 5 shots and even the nurse that helped us before the doctor came in said oh he is going to get a lot of shots and I think she said 4! So I thought on one less than we thought.

Then the doctor came in and we had the normal visit and then he mentioned shots and I asked how many and he said oh you are lucky with recent new technology we were able to reduce it down to 2 shots.

LO handled 2 shots like a champ and I was able to clam him down with just a small pack of fun size m&ms. Score!

I'm wondering how recent or different this shots schedule is with everyone else.

How many shots did your 4 year old get at their appointment?

Interesting article I found this morning. It's from the Autism Speaks website and states their views on the link (or lack thereof) between autism and vaccines. I'm glad to see such a prominent organization speaking out about this.

Yesterday my LO had his two month vaccines, including the rotavirus vaccine. He was terribly fussy all night with some screaming that we couldn't seem to relieve in the evening. He finally calmed down after some Tylenol and a nap on me. Last night he had several crying jags overnight with some big spit ups, and this morning he had a huge diarrhea with blood in his stool. He's never had that before. He was a very gassy baby as a newborn and we were worried about MS PI, especially after a few mucousy diapers, and a rash on his face and chest, but all seems to have cleared without me eliminating dairy. ( I did for two weeks and it didn't seem to do much, so I've been back on dairy for a while) i've left a message for the doctor office, but I've read online that a stomach upset could be a reaction to the rotavirus vaccine, and was wondering if anyone else had something similar.

So my cousin just saw a new pediatrician (they moved) and among other things was told she shouldn't give her baby Tylenol before or after shots because it will "weaken the vaccine." Has anyone heard that? We've both been to multiple peds before and only ever been told we should give it if needed.

She also chewed my cousin out for cosleeping, and said she works emergency and smothering from parents rolling over is the number one killer of babies. And that her baby MUST have vitamin D drops, even though they live in a freaking desert and go out every day. Needless to say, she'll be finding a new doctor immediately.
