Hi everyone! I hope you are all well. Life’s been crazy here - moving cross country (I could share a few funny stories of spots along the way with a 16 month old in my car with just mom). But we are starting to feel settled.

My question is my little girl is 17 months old. She’s taken a few steps by herself over the last month but not many and not often. Is there anything I should be doing to encourage her to walk more? Just looking for advice on how to encourage her to walk more. Or maybe it’s just it will happen when it happens?

For background my girl was born 4 weeks early. She was a late crawler - really started crawling around 12-13 months. Now she crawls everywhere. She cruises along furniture all the time without losing her balance. She stands really without support and for long stretches when playing or other activities.. I don’t believe it’s an impairment issue - I suspect it’s confidence and just not being ready to go for it. I don’t have any worries about her brain or body - she’s doing well developing on all fronts (I say that to mean I’m not looking for advice to take her to her pediatrician and discuss physical therapy - I don’t think it’s a development issue at all). And I also watch her and she clearly assesses the distance between furniture and toys and the like and if she assesses it’s too far, she lowers herself down and crawls to it rather than stepping to ut. I’ve moved furniture to encourage her to take steps but I believe if she gauges it’s a bit to far away - she crawls. It’s like she’s too smart for her own good on this front. :silly:

How long in between the two?

My first DD didn’t crawl or pull to stand until 10 months. She walked at 13 months.

DD2 started crawling at 6.5 months, pulled to stand at 7 and is now 8.5 months and she is pulling up, cruising the couch and crawling like a maniac. Just curious how long between cruising and walking for your babies. I’m sure I can look back to see what Q did, but just wondering what the average is.

ETA: She’s also already saying a few words. Q didn’t say anything until closer to 18 months. R already says “hi Dada” and “bye bye” while waving.

Our LO had her 1 year well-baby visit yesterday, and her doc noticed clicking in her hips. We've noticed an odd big step with 1 leg and dragging her other when she's practicing walking (she doesn't actually walk yet).

We mentioned that after the clicking was found, and the doc is concerned that she has an abnormal gait - she's recommended cranial sacral body work to start, with a provider who also has experience in PT/OT.

Anyone else go through something like this? I'd love to hear your experience. At first I thought I wanted to skip the body work and go straight to PT, but after talking with a physical therapist yesterday, she said she'd want to go the body work route first.

Can anyone tell me their experiences with an LO not walking by 15 months? When did they start to walk? Were you referred to early intervention? What were the results?

DD is 15 months. She met most of her gross motor milestones on the earlier side. She sat between 5 and 6 months, crawled properly at 6 months, pulled up between 6 and 7 months, and was cruising the furniture by 9ish months.

We thought for sure she'd be walking by 1 year, but the months tick by and no walking. She cruises like crazy, and she'll pull to stand and then let go and stand independently. She shows no interest in taking steps and she has never tried to stand without pulling up on something. We have one of those push toys but she'll only walk behind it for a short distance, and only if we stand her up and put her hands on it. She's never initiated it by herself. She will walk a super short distance holding onto our fingers but then fuss and sit down and refuse to stand up. A few times she's taken 2 to 4 steps in between myself and DH but only if we stand her up and coax her. She makes it about 2 steps and then lunges.

At her 15 month appointment the pediatrician suggested scheduling an evaluation with early intervention. She wasn't as worried about the walking but seemed concerned that she doesn't try to stand without pulling up. I was a little bit surprised she suggested EI, but I called to put our name in the system and get the ball rolling.

Just curious about others experiences if they had an LO who walked on the later side...

If you had a late crawler, how long after pulling up, did they walk? DS started crawling 3 days before his 1st birthday. He's now 14.5 and started pulling himself last week. He's pretty wobbly but you can tell he wants to take off lol. He still been such a chill baby, I'd don't know if I'm ready! :silly:

My DD is 4.5 and hates to walk. We live only 5 minutes away from the train station (2 minutes if you're an adult walking) but she will whine and groan the entire way. 5 minutes feels like 100 hours :meh: . DS is 2 yet is fine with these short 5-10 minute walks.

She wants to just be pushed around in a stroller or take the car. At this age, i think she can deal with 5-10 minutes of walking!

Any tips on how to deal with these situations?

DS is 3.5 y/o and he's been walking since 13 months. I don't know if it's just because he's so goofy, or lightning fast, or what but it seems like everytime we go somewhere he trips. I think he's tripping on his own feet. It doesn't matter what shoes he's wearing or what surface he's walking on either. Although I think he might trip a bit more on smooth tile at grocery stores even though he's wearing Nikes. He rarely gets hurt from the tripping though, just the very occasionally slightly scraped knee if he trips on cement. I always remind him to slow down.

Is your older LO this way too?

My 9 month old has been taking one or two steps for the past few days. Yesterday he took 3 before falling down. But he looks so much less stable than my older LO looked when he started walking at 10.5 months. So I'm just curious, when your LO started walking, were they good walkers right away? Or did they start slow? What was it like for your LOs?

My son looooooves to push his walker around - when it's in his vicinity he much prefers to "walk" than crawl. He also will stand unassisted for 5, 10, sometimes 15 seconds when he's distracted. But he doesn't seem at all interested in walking on his own! He's 11 months old and has been pulling up and cruising since he was about 8 months. I'm not worried at all, he's really strong and I know its still somewhat early to walk, but I want him to get going cause I know he'll love it! If your kid was like this, how long did it take them to start walking? Would it make sense to take away the walker, or is it good practice?

If your baby crawled early, or started pulling up early, did they start walking early as well? I know every baby is different, just curious what everyone else's experiences were. My daughter started crawling at 6 months. She's 7.5 months now, and just started pulling up. I have a feeling she's going to be walking by this summer.

LO took his first steps earlier this month, just after turning 11 months. In light of this milestone and since he starts daycare in a week, we took him to get fitted for his first part of shoes today. It turns out that he has high arches and medium wide (D) feet, and so the best shoes for him have laces. Hopefully his home daycare will be okay with them.

They mentioned that it's good for toddlers to wear their shoes indoors as well, both to get used to wearing shoes and for their food function/development. I had thought that it was better for them to be barefoot indoors. What do you believe?

Did you LO start with baby steps ( a few at a time and progressing from there?) Or, just full on walking right off the bat?

With Lo1, she never took baby steps. She would take a step or two from the couch to the coffee table, but she would never take free standing steps. At 17 months, she just started walking one night. On the video, we counted over 60 steps for her first time.

Lo2 is is progressing. She started standing and taking two or so steps, and has built up to around 10. She's been really sick this week, but I think once she's better, she will probably be walking full time soon.

So, did you have an off the bat walker, or a build up walker?

Awkward title, I know, but...

When did walking become your child's primary form of getting around? LO started taking steps around 12 months and at almost 13 months he takes about 10 steps and then drops to crawl. I don't blame him, as his crawling is much quicker and a much more effective means of transportation. I'm just trying to gauge when he will start defaulting to walking.

I'm so excited! D's been getting more confident with standing on his own (he's been cruising for months, and for the last week or so he would stand by himself, and excitedly make "crab hands" and then sit down), and after tricking him into taking 1-3 independent steps over the last few days, today he TOTALLY got it and was walking around (in short bursts) continuously when I got home from work. He falls down and gets right back up (by himself, without pulling on anything). I think he'll get the hang of it soon!

When I found out he had cerebral palsy I thought this day may never come, and to have him walking at 16 months (14 months adjusted) is just sooo awesome.

Just wanted to share a little ray of happiness :)

When did your LO abandon crawling (as their primary method to get around) and walk FT?

It took LO 1 about 2 weeks? She took her first steps at 14.5 months and she was walking at 15 months. LO 2 took her first steps on Saturday but hasn't done much since then.

S is 12 months and has taken multiple steps on several occasions, but only when she is super distracted...i.e holding a toy or eating.

If she's stepping and we even mention that she's doing great or she remembers she's on her own she freaks out and sits back down!

Anyone else's LO do this? Is it just a confidence thing? She is so happy walking when we hold her hand though and just wants to walk everywhere!

I keep telling myself that I will not worry until July when D will officially be 18 months adjusted, but as time gets closer and closer the worries creep in. D is actually really great with gross motor skills. He crawled around 7 months. He can stand up and down without holding anything. He climbs up and over everything, but he just will. not. walk. And he doesn't like push toys and usually actively avoids any form of practice.

I'm 99% confident he'll just one day start walking (and he's taken more practice steps in a row lately - holding hands), but I want to hear some stories about how walking after 16 months went with your lo.

Thanks!

When did he/she walk?

LO is 14 months and still isn't walking. She walks all over the house with her walker (or with furniture like our side tables that she turns into a walker :silly: ), but she won't walk independently. If she's not paying attention she will stand unassisted (last week she was drinking her milk and stood for probably 30 seconds), but it's almost like she realizes we want her to walk, so she'll drop down and crawl if we get excited or she notices us looking at her. It's so bizarre!

The pediatrician said it's not a cause for concern until 18 months so we've got time, but I'm getting impatient.

When did your late walker finally walk?
