My newly 3 yo DD just got her first pair of glasses. Does anyone have any tips to help her get used to wearing them full time? She complains about how they feel even though they're super flexible - I think they fit fine but it's a transition for her.

We've been aiming to wear them for longer and longer periods of the day but I haven't seen much difference in how she feels about it yet.

DS is 7 and recently has been vomiting kind of frequently. It seems to happen when he has sweets, so at first we assumed he was overeating / making himself sick by eating way past the point of being full. The last two times it’s happened though he hasn’t had much at all and forcefully vomited everything in his belly a few hours later. Are some kids just super sensitive to extra sugar in this way? There hasn’t been one food consistent the whole time so I don’t think it’s an allergy, unless it’s a random ingredient in lots of things!

My 7 year old has a bad cough right now and it is going to send me into a nervous breakdown. Every single cough just sets me on edge. We’ve tested twice and it’s not Covid. He can continue camp so it’s not like early days where a cough meant no child care for 2 weeks. But I think I’ve got some post-Covid trauma in the form of a tiny anxiety-rage whenever my kids cough. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way.

Our whole family got covid last week. The 3 off us who are old enough to be vaccinated had a rough few days but are already feeling much better. I'm starting to be worried about the 2.5 year old. She started with just a stuffy nose for several days, but she's had a really chesty, mucus-y sounding cough the last 3 days. It's worst at night when she's laying down. Did this happen to anyone else's kiddos where it looked more mild and then seemed worse? During the day she's a little tired but mostly seems ok. I will definitely also call her pediatrician, but I'm curious about other toddlers.

How long did mollescum last? Did you treat? If so, what was it?

DD (age 6) has had mollescum for over a year. We got a referral from her ped to see a dermatologist. She recommended treating with acid. They scab up and then are hopefully gone or you treat again. We tried this, but DD was miserable. Her mollescum is behind her legs but also between her butt/vagina area. She was in so much pain, crying to go to the bathroom, etc. It was terrible. The derm recommended another treatment bc some of the spots were still there. We said no bc of how traumatic it was. But, now its been almost a year later and the mollescum are coming back like crazy. I'm noticing way more spots on her legs behind her knees and she still has a lot by her butt/vagina area. Are there any other treatment options that have worked?!?! Help!!

We are in the process of deciding whether or not move forward with nightly injections of growth hormone for my five and a half year old.

I'm wondering if anyone here has a child on growth hormones and would be willing to talk about it.

Ultimately it's something we want to do (we considered it for the first time a few years ago, and held off to see if she had any further catch-up growth), it is just daunting to think about a daily injection for something like 7-10 years!

Thanks for any insight you can provide! Alternatively, if you're an adult who is under 4'10" and wants to chime in about that, I'm all ears!

My son is almost six, and he is so so so hard on himself and I don't really know how to deal with it. He's a serious perfectionist, and often will crumple/tear up his work if he's not happy about it - he'll be doing a drawing, decide it doesn't look good, and rip it in half, or colour outside the lines and crumple it into a ball. He frequently then regrets ruining his stuff and then cries. He was doing an after-school art class, got upset about something, and cut his canvas into a dozen pieces with scissors. He also sometimes says things like "I'm stupid, I hate myself" and "I don't belong in this family". This morning he said "I wish I wasn't alive."

I don't know how much of this is attention-seeking and he just wants us to hug him and tell him he's great and we love him, how much of this is frustration about being younger and always feeling like he's behind his brother (he also gets really upset about still wearing pull-ups when "nobody else in the family does"), and how much of it is a serious issue. I've tried to talk to him about "do you really feel like this, or are you just feeling sad and you need a hug?" and he doesn't seem really sure.

Advice? Commiseration? Most of the time he's a happy noisy little maniac but this makes me feel so bad for him and I worry about it a lot.

I have a 2 year old with sensitive skin - we are constantly battling one rash or another. We have a script from the doc that is basically strong hydrocortisone cream. If I'm diligent (which requires battling an unwilling toddler) this does help with rashes.

Lately I'm wondering if there is a food allergy component - she gets rashes around her mouth sometimes and her eyes often. I'm trying to note when it happens to see if there's a pattern for now.

Wondering if anyone here has dealt with sensitive skinned kids and has any tips - besides the obvious, as we are using scent and dye free detergent, Cetaphil wash, and giving baths sparingly. Is there any credence to my food allergy suspicion?

My 5 yo broke her arm last month. It was a T3 humerus fracture just above her elbow on her right (dominant) hand. (I will spare the traumtic details.) She had pins placed during surgery and the cast went almost up to her shoulder. Cast and pin removal last week, and its hard for her to straighten out her arm. More concerning, however, is that her hand is almost completely limp. It feels like a baby hand and she isn't using it because she can't. I spoke with the surgeon today and he said the bruising and limited use is normal and that its too soon to tell anything. Follow up is already scheduled for a few weeks out. Have any of your kids experienced anything like this? I'm just curious how your kids' recovery went.

Does anyone have a LO with a tic disorder/tourettes or family history? My nephew on my husbands side has multiple tics such as eye blinking, shoulder shrugging, abdominal tensing, throat clearing and due to such was recently diagnosed with tourettes. I don't know much about tourettes so I started researching out of curiosity and now I'm worried about my son. He's only 2.5, but as of late I've noticed he'll randomly raise his right shoulder. I know this could be nothing, but reading about how tics start and could progress has me feeling anxious. Im so afraid this is his "first tic" and his tics will grow into something more, and I don't want him to get made fun of or have a difficult childhood. Tourettes is also associated with co-morbid conditions such as OCD, ADHD, and anxiety disorders so that makes me feel even worse. I wouldn't be as concerned, but these things have such a huge genetic component and it runs on my husbands side.

The amount of mucus from the hysterical crying cancels out anything I can suck out :bummed: She can't quite blow her nose yet but is starting to get the idea. All the congestion has caused another bad cough and I think we're heading for an ear infection again. Any other suggestions for helping clear out her nose and sinuses?

Just curious, if your child reacted to an antibiotic with crazy hives, what was your experience with how long it took to resolve and did anything really help?

I knew she had gotten a few small hives earlier in the meds (for UTI) but didn’t think the dr would change anything based on that - well then of course she hit her threshold and the hives went insane. We stopped the med Friday but the hives are as bad or worse now. Constantly moving of course but everywhere. Dr suggested Benadryl the first day followed by Zyrtec and I do think it’s helped the itching some but wondering how long this may last? She just tested out of needing epipens for food allergies but clearly her immune system is still looking for trouble …

Also would you be totally freaked out if a kid covered in hives came to school?? (Her teacher knows.)

Our son has always been a toe walker. He isn’t autistic and doesn’t have any other (known) neurological or health issues, so we assumed he would outgrow it at some point. However, he will be 6 in December and is still walking on his toes 90% of the time. He says it’s not comfortable when he tries to walk flat.

After Googling around a bit, I’m extremely concerned and upset we didn’t pursue this issue with his pediatrician sooner. We have an appointment with a pediatric orthopedic dr but it isn’t until next month. I’ve read stories online of kids who had to be put in long term casts and braces to correct this and I’m so worried we will have to do the same for him.

Wondering if anyone has kids who overheat easily and if so, what you do to manage and any reasons you've discovered for why.

We live in northern VA (hot and humid summers). My almost 8 year old was prone to overheating since she was about 5 or so, which typically resulted from her major FOMO and going too hard at whatever activity she's involved in. Before camp 2 years ago, we taught her to pay extra attention to her body when she's exercising or playing, and to take breaks, cool down and drink water. Last year she didn't do camp but we spent a fair amount of our summer outside hiking and doing other activities and she generally seemed fine. This summer she will be heading back to camp and I'm getting nervous because in the past few weeks I've noticed that she seems to wilt very easily even in weather that I don't consider that hot (high 70s/low 80s). We go to the playground after school every day and she'll play fairly gently (monkey bars, some light climbing, etc.) for 15 minutes or so before becoming flushed and sweaty and will say that she feels tired. After some water and sitting she'll get back into it, but it seems like it's more acute than before. I think some of it can be psychological - I notice this happens more often when there aren't other kids to play with or when she's not in an active game of some kind - but that's not exclusively the case. I'm taking her for some bloodwork that our ped recommended we do anyway and will see if anything turns up but wondering if anyone's had this experience with their kids and if there's anything I should watch out for. She's otherwise perfectly healthy, great eater, great student, no medical issues, sleeps well, not on meds, etc.

Thanks!

Disastrous trip to the dentist today, my 7 year old has six cavities and one of them is so bad he needs to have that tooth pulled. I feel like the worst parent in the world. But talk to me about having a tooth pulled - I had assumed they’d numb it, but I talked to a friend whose son had one pulled and they used nitrous. I asked the practice and she said generally that doctor would just numb with kids but if I had a preference they’d do that. My son is already pretty scared about it and I think he’d probably do better with gas, I personally hate the numbing stuff and I think the idea of a needle in his mouth would send him over the edge, but does anybody have experiences either way? The dentist is an older man who’s pretty old school and I imagine that he does numbing because that’s what he’s always done but I want to be sure I’m standing up for my kid and not creating a terror of dentists.

As many of you know, I have issues with severe anxiety, especially when it comes to the health of my kids. My 6-yr old daughter has been having to pee very frequently and sometimes right after she goes, she feels like she has to go again. This is only during waking hours. She has no other symptoms. Her pediatrician tested her for bladder and urinary infections and she had neither. I’m so scared that she has bladder cancer or something else terrible. I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and knows what may be causing it. Thank you

My 11 month old is sick with a 102° fever and runny nose. Would you get her tested for Covid? Do they even do tests on babies? My older girls are sick too but no fevers.

DS, 5.5yo, is battling a rash on the backs of his hands. It went away over the holidays and gets better on the weekends so I'm pretty sure it's from the hand sanitizer at daycare. I sent some moisturizing GermX last week and his hands are improving but I still have to baby his hands at night to keep things from getting bad.

Do you have a hand sanitizer you recommended? I'm assuming I have to choose one with at least 60% alcohol to meet the CDC recommendations to meet daycare standards but I haven't verified that's the case.

I noticed what looked like a pimple on my DD’s torso this morning, but over the course of the day more have appeared (approximately 7). She doesn’t have a fever and hasn’t complained of any other symptoms. Going to monitor her and call our doctor tomorrow if more appear. I’ve attached a somewhat blurry photo, but curious to know if anyone knows what the spots could be? From my own Google image search the only thing they look similar to are chicken pox, which would be a surprise since she is fully vaccinated and hasn’t been in school since mid-December...but I know it’s not impossible.

My daughter just had her 6th birthday on Saturday and her cake had hot pink icing. Could this be the reason for light pink poop this morning? Or could it be blood or something serious? I’m scared.

Our daycare provider’s husband just got over Covid. He started to feel ill on Jan. 2-3, and his 10 days of quarantine were finished this past Wednesday. Our provider never got Covid, and tested negative (twice). She was told she could open back up tomorrow (1/19). She is very responsible and I trust that she is following recommendations she was given by the health department, but it still worries me to send them back so soon. Anyone have any experience with this? We are considering keeping them home all week, or at the earliest sending them back Thursday. It’s pretty difficult for us to make the end of this week work though, so if I’m being crazy I’m happy to send them back Thursday.
