I pass out when I vomit (because I'm awesome like that) so I opt for vomiting into a waste basket instead of the toilet. I find throwing the bag away and starting fresh much more pleasant than washing a bucket between getting sick.

Toilet for poo, bucket for barf. After a couple barfs not much is coming out anyways, so there’s not much to catch.

I have serious anxiety around stomach bugs too, so I feel you. We got it bad last year, and honestly it was a bad 12 hours… out of an entire 365 days. So j keep telling myself if we get it, we get it. We will be fine. It will suck. We will survive. Good luck.

Oh and we were not at all prepared so had friends drop off Gatorade and soup. So I’d keep that stocked!

If it makes you feel any better, we had a bug come through the house last week. I ruled out Noro, since we only had vomiting, not diarrhea. Pediatrician said it still sounded like Noro to her, and it doesn't always present with both. Five of us caught it, but no toilet emergencies (compared to when my partner and I had Noro before kids, and it was both ends every time). Still good to be prepared, but even if you all get sick, it may not be as bad as you fear!

Also, we have great puke buckets from the Dollar Tree. Lightweight plastic with handles and pour spouts, and they're easy to hold on a lap while sitting on a toilet.

I don't have great advice, but I totally feel this concern. Last week, about half of my second grader's class was out with norovirus. Somehow we made it through that round unscathed (probably only because my daughter was home sick with a cold) but I feel like it's coming for us soon. Eek.

I also have vomit anxiety, and yeah...I've been hearing weekly reports of who threw up in what location at school for weeks if not months now. I'm currently having my kids take probiotic vitamins & either eat lots of yogurt/drink probiotic/Yakult type drinks. I always make sure we have sick people food (Gatorade, Little Noodle soup envelopes, oyster crackers/saltines) in our house when bugs are going around so that if I'm taken down, I don't have to go out to get food supplies for sick kids.

As far as mess management, we brought home the little pink tubs (emesis basins) from the hospital when kids were born, and those are my go-to barf buckets...they're for soaking stained laundry the rest of the time. I've kept crib mattresses and in the past have had sick kids lay on those on a hard floor (not carpeted rooms, in case of accidents) with a bowl/bin nearby and quick access to a bathroom. For two ends at once issues, I just send them to the bathroom with a small lightweight plastic trash can lined with a plastic bag and a few paper towels on the bottom (to absorb/prevent splashing). This is light and easy enough for them to hold, or just put between their legs on the floor.

Also, have mattress covers like these on every bed in our house at all times - they don't cause a sweating issue for anyone, and we have several people who run very hot. It's a super thin waterproof lining topped by fleece or terrycloth:

Can you use waterproof mattress covers and just put less blankets on top of her? Ours has really saved our mattresses when the stomach bug hits. I've also layered sheets, and lined the top of the bed with towels and put towels on the ground around the bed (none of my kids have been able to master getting to the bathroom in time). Plus lots of buckets. We had a particularly nasty bug last year and one of my kids had an accident on our couch so now we also line the couch with towels when someone has a stomach bug.

Years ago (pre-kid), I got a horrid case of norovirus and (I think) as a result I now have major anxiety about vomiting and stomach bugs in general. Of course norovirus is everywhere right now and the way I know to manage anxiety is to be prepared so I'd love your tips if you've lived this recently on what helped/would have helped, particularly around containing the mess. I have plenty of disinfectant, masks to try and keep the non-infected away from germs, trash bags, all that stuff. My biggest challenge, gross as it sounds, is how to manage when vomiting and diarrhea are happening at the same time. I remember very clearly and traumatically living the Bridesmaids scene with things uncontrollably coming out of both ends. My mom blissfully cleaned up after me then but what does one do with a kid who's not in diapers anymore in this eventuality? Multiple sheet sets to prevent the mattress from getting ruined? Laying down in the bathroom on something? We have small bathrooms so I'm not sure how to do that and overall I'm having a very hard time planning for that part of it. We don't use waterproof mattress covers because they're typically plastic and my daughter overheats easily so I'm just remembering how messy this was even for me as an adult and trying to minimize the damage (recognizing it will still be a mess but at least I'll feel somewhat ready for it). Thank you!

Thanks, ladies. Glad to know I’m not the only one.

@meadow: I actually have b6 in my cupboard because I took it for morning sickness and will try adding it back. I’m taking a postnatal and a separate calcium supplement that together have 150% DV of vitamin D, so I hope I’m covered there.

@Jessiemuller88: I know I need to get back to exercise, I just don’t know when to fit it in my day. Weekdays are so hectic and I don’t sit down until usually right around 9, which is not the ideal time to work out.

@jennlin821: Thank you for sharing. I definitely see myself in your comment. My anxiety is more focused on keeping my family safe. I should probably call my doctor.

That sounds likes PMDD to me. I go through something similar - the week before my period is terrible for my mental health. Some days I would sit at my desk at work with " I can't do this" repeating over and over in my head. I couldn't function at work or at home. My whole life was overwhelming even if there wasn't something going on.

I realized that it wasn't normal and that is was greatly affecting my daily life; so talked to my primary care doctor about it, and she said that for PMDD she recommends very low level anti-depressants. Some you take only that week, and some you take every day.
I'm on 25mg of Sertraline every day, and it has made a HUGE difference. You really don't know how bad you are feeling until you are out of the 'fog'.

PMDD is a real diagnosable disorder and you recognize that your life is being affected. Make an appointment with your primary care or gyno, and tell them what is going on.

Much love. Mental health is a very hard thing to recognize and even harder to talk about. There is no shame in needing medicine to regulate your hormones - no one shames a thyroid patient for needing to take daily meds to regulate their hormones!

If you are having trouble talking about this, come back and we can come up with a script for you to use to talk to your doctor.

Hi, my daughter was born in October 2019 and my period came back in December 2020. Since then I’ve had debilitating anxiety with every cycle. I can’t take hormonal birth control for a number of reasons, so that’s out for me as an option. Everything that is causing problems is stuff that I’m anxious about anyways (because pandemic parenting, etc.) but for a week every month it gets so bad that it’s disrupting my life in serious ways. I still hope it will go away with time, but I don’t know if anyone else has been in this situation and what their outcomes were.

I work in the field, and if you have health insurance I agree with starting with a psychiatrist, or even a therapist who specializes in autism spectrum disorder and start there (try your health insurance or the Psychology Today therapist finder to find someone with that specialty). Either one can review your concerns and make a treatment plan based on that, a licensed practitioner in either field is qualified to make an Autism Spectrum diagnosis. Psychological/Neuropsychological testing can potentially help with diagnostic clarity, and if the request is made by a psychiatrist/therapist it may be covered by your insurance.

I take CBD 10 mg (Martha Stewart’s brand) and it takes the edge off my low level anxiety. I started it about one year ago, at the beginning of covid. I don’t take any medications at all, think there can be some drug interactions if you do take antidepressants or Rx drugs in general. So def ask your pharmacist (pharmacists generally know drug interactions better than providers).

@hellobeeboston: Hi!! My first appointment is today. I'm equally dreading it and looking forward to it. I am so appreciative of your advice. I pray this is a good fit. I went with a working mom in hopes that would help.

@SweetCaroline: Hey --- did you ever find someone and get started? I must say, as hard as therapy is, i feel really good about doing it and wish I had started much sooner... anyway, I hope you found someone you like.

I'm sorry you're having a tough time. I had to start video therapy sessions last spring because of the pandemic too. Finding a therapist is daunting.

What worked for me is asking a friend who seems happy with her therapist her therapist's name. I called her asking if she's taking new patients and she wasn't, but she mentioned her husband was. I reached out to him and that's how I found my therapist.

I trade Saturday hours with DH. I must be out of the house (or locked into room) until noon. He is out noon until 430.
I didn’t know what to do with myself at first but to have a luxury of routine time to fritter away is reassuring. . I try to make plans, catch up with errands and do miscellaneous concentration things then.. DD knows what to expect. I try to make a safe play date for her on Sundays sometimes. And yes to bubble baths and tea. Liquid, sleep, and scents. The simple sensory things. DD’s thing is stuffed animals. Lots of them.

Oh and I used to do the drive thing. I’d get in the car with DD and she would say where are we going? And I would say Don’t ask me!
