My mom usually does a child size rocking chair or something similar to that for 1 year (my godson got a rocking boat that was super cute...but something that rocks and will be long lasting)

Water table (we asked Aunts, Uncle, cousins to all go in istead of a bunch of little gifts, and they loved the idea)
Crazy Coupe (hands down her favorite thing right now)
Play Tent
PBK Anywhere chair
Radio Flyer Wagon (got for Christmas but loves it)

I think all of these will last her for a couple years. You get a play kitchen as well.

I would stay away from shoes cause you have no clue what size by the time LO starts walking.

First pair of walking shoes is nice, but those aren't in my mind "lasting" as they grow out of shoes so quickly.

For our LOs first birthday one parent got her the Cozy Coupe (her favorite toy hands down) and the other got her a battery powered four wheeler (also a favorite.) We chose to do outside toys, as they last mulitple seasons and hold up nicely. We also got a water table & wagon. Things she will grow into for the next several years.

The grandparents are already asking what to get my LO for his first birthday in a few months. We don't have a huge family so we won't be overwhelmed by gifts. What high quality/long lasting toys would you recommend for this age? Are there any essential items we might need that I am not thinking of yet (like first pair of walking shoes)?

My almost 14 mo doesn't nap well at daycare so he usually makes up for it on the weekends. He will normally sleep for 12 hours during the week (I have to wake him for daycare) and 13 hours on the weekends. Although, he gave us 14 hours on Sunday!!! He will also take naps that total about 3-4 hours. However, he is at home with DH today due to the entire state shutting down for the polar vortex and isn't sleeping much. He caught up!

dd (13.5 months) typically sleeps 11-11.5 hours a night and has 2 - 1.5/2 hr naps a day. i am def one of those moms who needs a lot of sleep too. right now i sleep 8-9 hrs a night and i still wake up super tired.

@Sammyfab: i'm glad that your lo doesn't have issues sleeping while traveling! we're going on our first vacation (a cruise) in a week and i'm scared! but LO is a super consistent sleeper. doesn't cry/fuss when put down and has only woken up in the middle of the night a handful of times since 8 weeks old. so i'm hoping she doesn't have issues on our vacation! still scared tho!

@Mrs Green Grass: I wonder that too! I've always needed less sleep and am admittedly a crappy sleeper. My husband on the other hand, is a great, super deep sleeper and can sleep anytime, anywhere. I guess my son is a combination of us both!

I'm pretty sure some of these super long sleepers get a feed and are then put back down (if I recall other threads correctly)...but whatevs. Cheers to good sleepers!

@Mrs Green Grass: Must have been the weekend for long sleeps! D slept 13+ hours Friday and 14+ hours Saturday night! Maybe our 11.5-month-olds are hitting a spurt or developmental milestone!

Typically he sleeps 10-10.5 hours during the week, but only because I HAVE to get him up. On the weekends he usually sleeps about 12 hours.

We just had a 2am-nearly 4am wake-up last night (due to puking). Like @Sammyfab: I can count on one hand the number of times we've had to actually go get him in the MOTN (since he started STTN).

@googly-eyes: I am being 100% honest when I tell you that he never wakes up (or needs us, at least), even when he is teething or sick. I can count on one hand the number of times we have had to go into his room in the middle of the night since he was 6/7 months and they were for 30 seconds to give him his lovey.

We just traveled back home (2-hr time zone change) for 2 weeks for the holidays. My LO had to sleep in 4 different places (i.e. 4 different playpens) and we had zero sleep issues. He's pretty awesome!! We are very consistent with routines...but he is a super independent sleeper and he really loves his lovey (which comes everywhere with us when we travel!).

Now she is 2 and gets 11-12 hours at night, and we usually have to wake her from her naps after 3+ hours. It is great to have a high sleep needs child. :)
