Thanks everyone!! I am leaning toward the cutting food toy that @mediagirl: suggests, but I am reading the reviews, and people are saying the paint chips off and all. Argh!

@skibobrown: Ditto on the book! The storyline doesn't seem to matter anymore - at bedtime I'd ask LO to pick a book to read and he always pick that "matching" book where there are multiple pictures of objects, so I get to "quiz" him on what is what at our bedtime storytime. What a weirdo lol

@banana: My LO loves mega blocks too! One of the best toy purchases we made :)

We just ordered a realistic baby doll off Amazon to get him used to the idea of being gentle with a baby and not throwing it through the basketball hoop ;)

We are planning to do a play kitchen at Christmas when he's closer to 2, he just doesn't seem quite ready for it yet.

My DS just turned 2 and his favorite toy right now is his Thomas the Train wooden trains. Also, he hasn't ever fed any of our baby dolls. He just pushes them around in the doll stroller, and today I caught him giving the baby doll a kiss after yelling "sit down!" oops wonder where he got that from...

At around that age, my son loved mega blocks and puzzles of all kinds. And he surprisingly really loved his toy stroller. He liked pushing around his cars in it. :) In terms of pretend play, I don't think you necessarily need pretend play toys for him to do it. My son used to pretend to feed his cars with cheerios or pretend to put his soft animals to sleep by covering them with a blanket. You can have fun with pretend play with ordinary household items! The Little People toys are always a hit at around that age. And it helps engage in pretend play too. My son loved the Little People school bus.

Any kind of ball. If all we had was a ball, he wouldn't need anything else. We have the Little Tykes basketball hoop that hangs over the door- favorite. toy. ever.

Also any board book that show pictures of animals and their names (no story involved, but I do the noises). He loves these books, but they do get old to us after "reading" them for the 6th time in an hour!

I wish I had a suggestion for this but I'm curious myself. Instead, I'm commenting on the feeding the doll phenomenon. I got DS a set of play food when he was 18 months and a doll at 18 months. He hasn't tried to feed the doll but he's pretended to eat the banana (which is felt) several times. Does this count? ;)

ETA: DS does like a truck set I picked up for him at IKEA a lot. It has a little crane with a magnet and he likes to pick the blocks off the trailer with it! He also enjoys sorting the correct blocks (red triangles, blue squares, yellow circles) into their correct slots. Maybe your DS would like something like this?

http://www.amazon.com/IKEA-MULA-Crane-Blocks-Beech/dp/9177122062/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379346755&sr=8-1&keywords=ikea+wooden+toy+truck

Right now -- just shy of 18 months -- DD likes:
- All books, but especially picture books where I can say a word and she can point at the picture and try to repeat the word
- A little bumble bee pull along toy - she pulls the string and the bumble bee buzzes and rolls along behind her
- Soft blocks -- we don't have any at home, but they have these big soft stackable blocks at daycare that she's obsessed with. She can build them into a tower that is taller than she is!
- Any kind of balls, but especially bouncy balls

What is your LO's favorite toy(s) for 1.5-2 year old? My LO is almost 20 months and I need to expand his "toy collection"... and I am $3 shy of free shipping at Amazon lol

(my budget isn't $3, I just need to buy another toy or two :-))

Another question for mothers of boys is, does your LO have a play kitchen or play food...etc.? I read that "feeding a doll" is a milestone by 18 months (?) But we don't have pretend food for him to feed the dolls, so I have never seen him doing the pretend feeding. I wonder if other boys have that as I always assume play kitchen / tea set is for girls...

Suggestions please!

We took DS to Portugal when he was about 15 months. Granted, we were already living in France so it was less than 2 hours by plane. But it was a great mix of cities (Porto and Lisbon) and country side (Douro Valley) and you could even do the beach. You could probably find a direct flight from Atlanta to Lisbon.

@irene: We stayed at a hotel since my BIL's place was way too small to host us. If we went again, I would probably try and rent an apartment, since this would have given us much more freedom when it came to food. DD would wake up at 11 pm and want to eat lunch, due to jet lag. We ended up having to save leftovers from dinner (which she tantrumed through) and feed those to her, but of course there was no microwave...

Dim sum available all day long, copious food courts, 7-11's that sell hot foods, that is pretty kid friendly in my opinion! :-)

There were suprisingly always high chair everywhere we went, and changing table. Also, many of the shopping plazas (seems like that is all there is to do in HK) have a floor devoted to kids stores, and there is always a family restroom there. We didn't venture too much off the beaten path and stayed mainly in Causeway Bay and Lantau Island (where family is).

HK Disney, Macau, those are all places you can easily go that may also be of interest!

Singapore was also a really good destination to take DD, but it is so small, you may not really consider that a true vacation. We did that as an extended layover on a trip to SE Asia and it was fun.

@irene: my LO is 3 months and his passport has just come so we haven't traveled internationally yet. We are headed to London next month but I'm guessing you have already "been there done that". We had actually considered stopping in Iceland since it was cheap but ultimately decided against it.

I've been to Peru three times pre baby and like @MediaNaranja: said, Latin America is very baby friendly. Rural Peru has lots of sites to see and lots of local children and animals to play with.
When I went to Puerto Rico we stayed at a resort by the beach, but rented a car to see the sites and explore the rainforest.

I think in any Latin American destination you would need to baby wear and either skip the stroller or use an all terrain stroller.

@Trailmix: @wheres_c: @irene: I was also going to suggest latin america. I know that there are direct flights from atlanta to lots of latin american cities. I havent personally been with a child but they LOVE babies and small children there. I know that Ecuador is only a 7 hour flight or so, or Buenos Aires could be fun, too!

@Trailmix: We are trying to stay away from beaches, because that would be too easy. LOL

@T-Mom: kudos to you! That is our to-do list too as we have to go visit family as well. I've been kinda worried about it because growing up there, I don't think they have good amenities (eg. high chair, changing stations) everywhere like we do here in the US.... not to mention I am not sure if they have kid-friendly food if we just go out to a restaurant! (For now, I give LO some of whatever I eat from my plate). I just can not remember if people ever really bring small children (younger than 2) out to a restaurant to eat. I also heard from a relative that her child got food poisoning while in Hong Kong. Sigh.

What was your experience? Did you stay at a hotel (or service apartment) or at family/friends' homes? Did you mostly eat out or eat at home with your family? Did you have problem finding changing stations? So many questions! :)

@MungBean: Would love to Korea !!! But we have to pass the Hong Kong hurdle first. Then after hearing all the horror stories with cruises these past months I think we are going to steer clear from cruises for a while.... but that would have been a wonderful idea.

@wheres_c: Have you actually been to Peru/Costa Rica / Puerto Rico with you LO? Of course that's wonderful, just that I am not sure how the experience would be hauling/carrying a possibly over-tired cranky tantrum-throwing child during the course. I'd love to hear your experience!

I actually thought about Puerto Rico -- just want to get some advice from someone who actually has been there while carrying a child !! :)
