My daughter is kind of doing the same thing. She's 17 months and went a couple weeks learning a new word almost everyday and then it stopped and she doesn't use those words much anymore. She was doing more babbling and using less words I recognized. But then this week she's kind of picked it up again and today out of nowhere she gave me her first clearly spoken sentence "I sit here" pointing to her little stool. As long as he is still babbling and attempting to interact and speak I wouldn't be concerned. I would give it a couple months and if things don't pick up call/email the pediatrician.

My DD just had her 18-month checkup and they asked if she had 10-15 words (animal sounds like woof, meow, moo count, as do made-up words they use consistently, i.e. my DD calls her pacifier a "mimi" and her ped said that's a word). Apparently more than that is great but ten is appropriate. Her ped also said "we're happy if they can put two words together at age two." So I think you probably don't need to worry yet, but you know your LO best so if you're worried, there's no harm in asking for help/more info.

Thanks for your feedback. The pediatrician was definitely unconcerned at his last check up, so we'll just give it some months and see how things go. Maybe if there's no progress, I'll take him in. I was just surprised that he hasn't made a "comeback" with the words that he was saying before.

Once a word is said once it "counts." So it's normal not to repeat words. But that being said, I'd trust your gut and if you are really concerned, check it out.

I remember my nephew had some speech regression in that he stopped saying words he previously was using. It was as though he was very self conscious about it sounding "correct" so he stopped saying them altogether. He ended up being a late talker but when he did talk it was a big boom of vocabulary and strings of sentences.

I think sometimes kids at that age learn new words, file them away, and then stop saying them for months. An eval can't hurt if you're worried, but kids' speech development can be all over the place, so it's easy to worry when it's nothing.

For what it's worth, my son had about that many words at that age, and he started talking properly very late (just after two) but he's actually ahead of many kids in his day care now. He did get early intervention therapy, but he started talking while we were still waiting for it to get approved

My year and a half old son is very social and a babbler, but only has about 6 words that he'll say consistently. About 2 months ago, he was showing a lot of progress, and added about 10 words to his vocabulary, although he'd mostly say those with prompting. Then, we moved from DC to Florida, and he pretty much lost those 10 words. He continues to babble a lot and will sometimes (rarely) repeat familiar words. Anyone know what's normal for this age? Should I schedule a follow- up with his pediatrician before his 2 year appointment?

I think they say Terrible Twos because they are going up 6 months and down 6 months from their second birthday. So 18-30months. At least that is the way with LO. She was the worst at about 25 months. I always thought it was 2-3 years but not for us.

I think LO was probably actually more challenging at 1.5 years than at 2.5 years (his current age)- LO is really verbal, and I think he gets a lot less frustrated now that he is able to express himself and ask questions and express preferences. I think he also appreciates the independence that has come from improved gross and fine motor skills.

@irene: Lol, my LO usually freaks out the second we walk through the waiting room door! She hates the scale, and since that's first it's always a bad start. Usually we can't even get a real accurate weight, but last time the nurse stayed in the room and I took LO to the scale by myself. We've also weighed her with me holding her and then I had to weight myself. I hate seeing friends post pictures on facebook of their kids smiling happily with their doctors at their checkups! But she is actually getting better as she gets older.... her 2 year wasn't a complete meltdown.

@artbee: LO hates the doctors too! There was not one time that he could be calm and not be kicking and screaming :(. He's usually very sweet though (when not in a tantrum outbreak). I sensed that our doctor suspected him having issues (eg. autism) because for twice now (15 and 18 months well check up), he frowned and said, does he behave like this normally? We said, no, it is just with you! Well. I hope it is not a true concern, because I am not sure if other kids are already acting more like civilized human beings while mine is still behaving like a caveman (thus the concern).

@creativemomma15: everything i read indicated that it was normal ... he never did it so hard that he hurt himself beyond the point of just crying that we know of, so we would basically just tell him "no" and ignore so that he'd stop on his own -- didn't want him to associate it with attention, you know? But yeah, the crib thing is scary. We have some padded teething rails that might help, but of course that's only for the top of the bars.

Sometimes when he is fighting a nap or bedtime he will bang his head on his crib too. We never know what to do, if you go to him he will just learn to bang his head when he wants out, but if you let it go he gets hurt. Any tips?

Yes! Ugh, I am exhausted of the tantrums already, however I think we have some teething issues too. DS is 17 months old. Also, when he throws a tantrum he bangs his head on the floor/door/whatever he is closest to so I don't feel like I can completely ignore the tantrum or anything. I just want the head banging to stop.

I am experiencing this a little as well, DS will be 18 months on the 22nd. I am chalking it up to he has a distinct opinion, knows what he wants, doesn't understand why he can't get what he wants, and lets out his frustration the only way he can.... screaming. It isn't too bad, but that could be because I'm just on the cusp of it, or because I've gone through it once and it doesn't bother me as much as it did the first time around (I was expecting it this time!).
