You could try a sound machine near the pack and play on white noise. That might help a bit.

3mo is definitely too young for cry it out anyway! I think at that age, he should be awake for a max of 90-120mins, so maybe he's overtired. I'd try swaddling then rocking/bouncing. Also, have you tried a paci?

@francypants: that sounds so exhausting, trying to work and take care of the baby. But your set up sounds about as good as it could be.

My LO is 4.5 months old now and for the last month it's been way harder to get her to sleep on the go. She used to just sleep at her big sisters activities no problem. Now she does much better sleeping at home, but she still takes 40 minute naps all day long, whether on me in the carrier or in our room with the white noise and swaddle. She has never fallen asleep in the swing but I know other people have luck that way. Good luck- it's really tiring trying to do both like that, I'm sure!

My baby didn't nap in a crib until about 11 months! Only in the car, stroller or on me. What about pushing him to sleep in the stroller in your office?

Eh. I wouldn't fret about the crib naps. At 6 months you can always sleep train for naps. We had to even though we'd done some crib naps all along.

I have no advice but that's so nice that you have the ability to take your LO to work with you.

Are you a part of your local babywearing group? Maybe you can ask some fellow babywearers about getting them to sleep in the crib. I'm a babywearer but it's very part time.

@francypants: Ah, that makes sense then. I was picturing an office like mine, where we are in cubicles and everyone just works on computers or is in meetings all day long. I would definitely recommend trying a swing then, if you haven't already.

I could see this working (for now) as a church secretary. I think my son does better at naps on the go than naps in his crib! So I think the carrier will be a great resource for you. But others are right that it will get difficult as he gets older and more active. Mine will be fine playing on his own for ~15 minutes, but not hours at a time. But maybe a combo of playing on his own and carrying. And if you're talking to/at him, that helps. It would get easier again once he starts being able to do activities on his own (coloring, building, etc.). But I think the toddler years might be difficult.

@francypants: That sounds like an awesome set up while it works! Honestly, as he gets older, I'd personally be more concerned about awake time than sleep time. My nap-hating kiddo has gotten much better about napping at work since I started bringing her to work with me, but awake time has gotten much more challenging. I also have an early mover though--rolling at 5 months with a cast on a broken leg, crawling at 6 months, pulling up at 7 months, etc.

If he sleeps well in a wrap, I would just keep doing that until it doesn't work. Like I said, my little one only started napping in a pack n play while I'm at work in the last few weeks. But she sleeps great in her crib at night and usually takes one nap in her crib on days that were home. My kid will sleep when she needs to, I follow her cues. As she got bigger, a soft structured carrier was more supportive to have her in for long stretches of time.

Its actually not too complicated. I work at a large church and have a pack and play in my office next to my desk where he is very happy with a little mirror and toys and things to grab and look at. We talk while I work and he is quite often playing there, with a coworker who came to steal him for a few minutes or in my arms when I need to run errands around the building. I don't expect this to last forever of course.

@T.H.O.U - I wouldn't expect him to never cry. I'm just more wondering how other mamas do naps on the go and if it is possible to do that on a regular basis.

My LO goes to work with me. I also work in an office setting. It's not full time so I only need her to nap once while I'm working. I nurse her to sleep and let her nap on me. She rarely ever naps in her crib but easily goes down in her crib for nighttime sleep, so I don't really try to get her in the crib for naps. At that age my DD slept really well in the rock in play and swing.

This sounds pretty impossible to me.
None of mine napped in cribs until six months and the period from 4-6 months was full of annoying cat naps.
While mine love carrier naps they all would wake up as soon as I sat down. And by three months require too much interaction to focus on anything.
I can get good long naps with the swing so that would be my recommendation, but I don't see that at a long enough solution.

I work as a nanny, and bring my 8 month old with me. We started when she was 3 months old. She has always been a baby who loves to be worn, and still naps best in the carrier. When I started working again, she would only nap in the carrier. That did get better, around 6 months. She started taking at least some naps in the crib at home then, and just this month starting taking naps out of my arms at work.

May I ask how your little one is occupied when not sleeping or eating while you work?

I had a baby that was tough to put down. The only way I could get her to nap other than on me or in a baby carrier or in a stroller was in the swing. That was a godsend, and I highly recommend it for naps, although your baby will likely outgrow it soon.

That said...I don't understand how anyone expects this to work? Will you continue to bring baby into work when they start crawling, walking, etc? I tried working from home a little bit towards the end of my maternity leave and the most I was ever able to get done was 1 hour per day. I just can't imagine that this will work out for you (sorry!).

@My Only Sunshine: i totally agree with francypants. I cannot imagine having my LO in the workplace except maybe when she was TEENY-TINY (4-10 weeks); she was unpredictable after that. Sure, she slept a lot, 4 naps a day, but she needed to be engaged during awake time as she progressed towards 4,5,6 months. And I would probably be a nervous wreck thinking I was disrupting my coworkers.

My only suggestion might be a rock n play at work or a maybe a fisher price snug-a-something swing? It might make a crib transition easier at home as well.

Hi Everyone! So I am a bit new to this (board and motherhood) and need some help figuring out how to pull off taking my baby to work and also getting him to nap. I am very thankful I can bring him with me to my 9-5 (ish) full time job. He is 3 months today and we have been doing fine since I returned to work at 8 weeks. Until now..

My plan was to keep him on a 3 hour eat-wake-sleep schedule and essentially wear him in the wrap for his naps. I do have my own office, but I'm not in a space where I can let him cry much - so swaddling him up and letting him cry/fuss himself to sleep has never been an option.

The wrap has been working but as he gets older and more alert, it is becoming much more difficult to get him to fall asleep in the wrap and to stay asleep. My other issue is that he's so accustomed to being in the wrap that he reaaally screams and fights when hes put in the crib for naps on the weekend.

So here are my questions: are there other on-the-go mom's who really just aren't able to put their baby to nap in a crib during the day? And then if you do have to do naps in a carrier or stroller on a regular basis, will they ever nap in the crib? And is it reasonable to try and pull this off for at least a few more months? To maybe 6 months old?

I love wearing him but I feel like I've created this little nugget who will NEVER sleep anywhere else but on his mother's body! AH! And I probably need a different post to talk about the fact that he's so used to waking up 30 minutes into a nap and having me immediately console him (pacifier in hand..because he's like.. on me) that when it happens in the crib, I can't get there fast enough and he screeams.

And just to be thorough, here's our schedule:

7am - wake up and eat
8am - swaddled in the crib, crying (him, not me.. mostly), attempt at a nap while I finish getting ready
8:30/9am - if he's awake, we just leave for work. If he's asleep, I try to let him sleep as long as possible before I need to leave
9am - back in the wrap at work
10am - wake and eat
11:15-11:30 - in the wrap to sleep
1pm - wake and eat
1:15-1:30 - wrap for a nap
4pm - wake and eat
4:30am - carseat home
5pm - attempt catnap in the crib.. baby cries the whole time (despite rocking, shusshing..) sometimes this becomes a stroller walk or carrier walk so he sleeps
6/6:30pm - eat
7pm - bath, bedtime routine
7:30 - eat and sleep

We have brought our LO to the beach a few times this summer. I have not put sunscreen on him but always make sure to keep him in the shade. We have not put him in the water so did not bother with the bathing suit. Hats are good even when they are in the shade because it is bright! We brought him in the car seat and took the mattress of a pnp for him to lay on. Mostly he slept in the car seat. Also if you are bfing don't forget a nursing cover. Nursing under the cover was the only way to get him to fall asleep.

I agree some sort of wind screen would be ideal. We took LO to the beach and he got covered in sand, when I was changing his nappy the sand went into all his creases and I couldn't get it off with baby wipes! Luckily he did not mind but I imagine some babies would. We just used the pushchair for naps

@CakeLady: I figured we would test the water and see how cold it is. I also thought about taking her inflatable bath tub (the big rubber duck one) and putting some water in it to warm in the sun, and then letting her experience it that way.

@Mamaof2: That is a good point... I will definitely have to give that some thought! Maybe we can rig up some kind of screen.

@Pumuckl: Love the powder idea! Where could I find a mineral sunscreen?

If you have a pack and play that is easy to fold up, I'd suggest that as a place for baby to nap.

@mrsrain: do you have a wind screen? If you lay the baby down in the shade on a blanket and the wind is crazy (like it usually is at the beach) sand will blow all over LO

@mrsrain: great timing! Our LO is the same age and we are also going to the beach this weekend. We've got pretty much the same stuff. Are you planning to take LO in the water? We are going to be at Lake Michigan and I just wonder whether the water is too gross for new baby skin... Though it may be too cold anyhow...
