@Sweet T: Thanks thanks thanks! I happened to have 2 of those similac advanced premixed bottles at home (those were from a previous trip when he was still willing to nurse - I brought them in the carry on with me just in case) and I tried to fit their nipple to a medela bottle and it fits! Which means the medela nipples would probably fit onto these premixed bottles. Thanks! I will bring a few of these :)

And thanks for everyone's tips and sharing of the experience. I wasn't sure if bottled water was OK but now I know. Thanks!

We just moved from Tokyo to Beijing, with a few days in Hong Kong in between, just this past weekend. LO is 9.5 months old and decided to self ween from the boob two weeks ago. We bought formula powder in the single serve packets to take for the flight plus 2 bottles. We also bought a few pouches of baby food (ella's kitchen brand) and disposable spoons, as well as disposable bibs. Her regular spoons and bibs, as well as big can of formula, extra bottles, bottle brush, we packed in our checked luggage. Luckily, LO drinks from Playtex drop ins, so that made it much easier. It all seems like a lot of supplies and it does seem overwhelming. but just take a deep breath and relax. It's really not that bad.

@irene: We moved from Kansas to Hawaii when DS was 10 months old. The traveling is a little tricky but you can do it!

Similac makes to-go bottles of ready to feed formula. They're 8oz and most standard size nipples/rings will fit on the bottles. They were a lifesaver for us. We didn't have any problems getting them through security either (we had 12!!). Just let them know that you have unopened formula. They had us put it all in a bucket and they scanned it. It was no big deal. We kept food and spoons in the diaper bag and kept it to what we would need while we were traveling plus a couple extras. We went to the store the day after arriving here and picked up things we needed. All regular bottles were packed in our checked baggage, nipples & rings were in carry-on baggage.

I packed our bottle brush and bought dish soap when we went shopping. I washed bottles in the bathroom sink and laid out a towel on the counter for them to dry on.

Why not just buy a small soft-sided cooler bag and take pre-mixed formula? It only needs to be refrigerated once the bottle is open. You can find a cooler bag or lunchbox with a small ice pack and just keep them in there once opened.

@irene: When we're flying, I just buy botyled water instead of carrying my own. So three or four bottles with formula (I put the pre-measured powder directly into the bottles but some people use a formula container with compartments instead) into a rolling suitcase (our carryon) and buy bottled water once we get through security. I've never had an issue getting through TSA as long as I declare all the food/ formula for the baby right away.

Everything else minus the liquids (bottled water, baby food, and dish soap) goes into a reusable shopping bag in my checked luggage. Then we buy what we need as soon as we get to our hotel room.

Certainly babies don't have to have only boiled water; we use straight tap water at home because we know the water quality (my husband's an engineer at our local water company) but most tap water is perfectly safe for babies. However, if it makes you uncomfortable to use tap water, you can use bottled water ( we use normal bottled water, but some people use specially marketed "nusery water") instead.

@irene: ahh, yes Playtex does have a breastmilk storage kit that comes with an adapter that connects to most breast pumps. I never thought of trying to attach a medela nipple & ring to it though. Good idea on your friend's part! But if you are already overwhelmed with traveling with an infant for the first time and being new to formula feeding, etc., it might just be less stressful if you stick with the bottles you use now. IMO, it doesn't take that much longer to wash bottles, nor do I think taking just a 1-day supply of bottles is that bulky, but that's just me. I did use the adapters for my second DD while traveling and pumping, but then again, she took Playtex bottles & nipples at that time.

http://www.playtexbaby.com/mobile/Bottles/Breast-Milk-Storage-Kit

Don't worry about TSA. Like I said, they'll likely just wave a test strip over the water. I've flown out of multiple airports with water and different kinds of milk for my kids... Was NEVER asked to throw anything out.

If I were you, I'd bring the least amount of gear possible:

Formula (either the can itself -or- single serving -or- ready feed, whatever you prefer)
Just enough bottles for 1 day
Fill a tiny container with dish soap
Bottle brush or whatever you use to clean the bottles
Bottled water (only enough for the flight IF you don't get the ready feed) you can buy bottled water at your destination

I always used bottled water for formula fed DD. When I traveled on the plane, I just purchased bottled water at the terminal or just asked for bottled water on the plane from the attendant. When we got to destination we hit up a supermarket for larger bottles of water. I used the little travel single serving pak of formula for convenience. I think you have covered everything you need. It is going to be hairy no matter how much you prepare because it's travel. Once you go through the routine a few times, you will get into more of a rhythm.

@NYCaliMama: Yes but that's why I want tips on how to make it not hairy (when you are not at your home, without your own gear, things usually get way hairy and messy). Like maybe there is a disposable bottle that connects to the medela nipples magically that I didn't know about, or maybe there is really an easier way so no washing is required that I didn't know about...etc.

In fact I just talked to my friend and she said the playtex disposable drop-ins have an adapter ring that can connect to a different type of nipples... (not sure if it works with medela nipples) I need to call baby's r us tomorrow morning to find out..

@brownie: We do have a microwave and a mini fridge but that's about it.... and no not possible to change because husband spent all that time to research something that he thinks works best for our situation... (has to be within a certain hotel chain and what not. and it is a suite so LO can sleep while we watch TV outside or something).

I hope they don't make me throw the water away :( But do you guys boil your own water or just bottled distilled water is OK?

@irene: but even when not traveling, isn't it the case that bottles need to be washed at the end of the day anyways too? I agree that it's not a good time to switch up nipples... so def just stick with what your LO is used to. The Similac Advanced single serving packs have the advantage of not being bulky.to pack and you don't have to worry about refilling containers. Just might make your life a little easier. In my experience, TSA will take pre-filled bottles of water, but they will wave a test strip over it to make sure it's safe. The worst case scenario is that they ask you to dump all the water and you'll buy bottled water at the terminal, but this has never happened to me and I've traveled quite a bit with my DD's as babies and toddlers. My first DD was mostly FF.

@irene: Look at TSA website. They should let you bring bottles of water. Especially if you tell them it is nursery water and NOT tap water. They are supposed to let you do what you need to do for infants.

Is it possible to change hotels to one that has a fridge and a sink? We usually do Residence Inns because they allow us an actual kitchen.

@Honeybee: THANKS FOR THE TIPS!!!

So you'll be bringing 10 bottles (say you feed 5 times a day) prefilled with formula? In your hand carry...? Did the airport security give you trouble for bringing all these liquid?

I don't know about the formula you use but the one I use (similac advanced) say once I mix the formula, I have to use them within an hour. I am thinking of bringing, say 4 bottles filled with 5 oz of water, and 4 containers with 4 portions of formula powder, but husband said it will be tricky to get through security, because premixed formula is one thing, but bringing bottles of water is another and the security may not understand this! What was your experience with that?

Did you check the "water bottle filled with tap water from home" in your luggage? Do you use tap water to make formula or do you bring it to the location and boil them? I heard that babies should only drink filtered boiled water?

What I do is wash all my bottles right before we leave and pre-fill them with the proper amount of formula. That guarantees that I won't need to wash bottles for the first two days. I put three or fou bottles in the diaper bag and the rest in a reusable shopping bag along with the bottle brush, an extra can of formula, dishwashing soap, spoons, bibs, and the babyfood containers. That guarantees all the feeding stuff is all together and easy to find. I also put in reusable water bottles filled with tap water.from home. I think it's always a good idea to travel with water in case you break down or get stranded. At the hotel, I scrub out the sink/ countertop with my own soap, and lay down a clean handtoel to dry all the bottles and bottle parts. I also designate one space in the room (usually a desk or wet bar) for a baby station. I set out the diapers, wipes, food, bottles, etc.. all organized so I can access everything easily and quickly. Everything that's dirty goes back into the reusable shopping bag in the closet until I have time to wash it.

Eta: Although I make my own baby food at home, we use Gerber Organics when we're traveling, so the only dishes we take are spoons.

@NYCaliMama: We are using similac advanced - I don't worry as much about the actual formula - I am just bummed and worry about how there will be so many bottles (+dishes, since LO is eating solids, and pump parts! Argh!) to wash at the end of the day and it is going to be a mess.

Is there even a disposable type of bottle that fits with the medela nipples? I know there are many types of disposable bottles but it comes with a different type of nipple. I didn't want to introduce new nipples to LO at this point because formula is already a new thing to him I am afraid he'd not want to eat at all.

I wish there were a Traveling board....

We will be traveling with LO (8.5 month old). Since he recently decided he doesn't want to breastfeed anymore we are gradually switching to formula (long story, please don't judge me :-( ). We are newbies to formula, and on top of that I am still hoping to pump two times a day. All of a sudden I realized I'll be bringing soooo much gear - the many bottles, formula, containers that contain formula powder, sippy cups, spoons, containers for his food, baby food, pump! pump parts. washing detergent and a brush! OMG....

I thought about bringing a big bowl to contain the bottles when washing them every night so I don't put those bottles directly in the bathroom sink and got my husband upset! He thought we were just going for 4 days and I am bringing the whole house down there...

I thought about buying those playtex bottles with drop-in liners so I didn't have to wash so many bottles (the liners are disposable), but since I am going to all of a sudden switch LO to almost completely formula (since we still have a pretty big stash of breastmilk in the freezer so he's still getting 80-100% of breastmilk a day at home - but we can't bring the stash with us on vacation!), I didn't want to introduce a new bottle+nipple at the same time as well (he already isn't a very enthusiastic eater).

Another question is, do I buy baby water when I get to the destination, or do you boil your own water? (we'll be staying in a hotel which means if we were to boil our own water, we'd have to use that dirty coffee maker and boil it 1 cup at a time...) Or do you just use any regular water from the tap...? or purified water you buy from the supermarket?

Do you have any tips at all that can make traveling with an 8.5 month old easier? Again I am a formula newbie. Should it really be this hard? Anything that I am forgetting?
