I'm so sorry! I'm in southern Louisiana now and have a similar house layout (1 story, high ceilings and the same size) Our A/C definitely gets cold though - DH has it down to 68 at night while we sleep. It definitely sounds like something is wrong and they need to fix it. Don't believe their it's too hot to be cool inside line! (It totally makes me angry that they tried to say that!)

I really hope they fix it soon and you get a break from the heat. When I lived back home (up north) and we got a heat wave the A/C couldn't handle, a big floor oscillating fan + ceiling fans with the A/C helped out. It was annoying and cumbersome, but it did cool down the house a little more.

@Mrs.Panda: We had that happen last year. It was a freon leak. Based on what our a/c guy said if they don't actually fix the where the leak is, it will keep happening until it blows the master control panel in the blower (which apparently is located in the heater). We had to replace the coil where the leak was located and the heater to fix the blower. When we recharged the freon (the one time that we did), it only lasted about a month before it blew the master control panel like we were warned.

Yeah so the AC guy just left and it was the same problem that the first ever visit told us... The copper pipe is leaking so they just kept putting freon in. I'm so annoyed. They have to get the repair authorized and we should hear in a couple of days, but in the meantime they refilled it.

Ugh, that sounds brutal. If we have a long stretch of days where it is over 90º and doesn't come down much overnight our AC can't seem to get things cooler than 78 or 79, but, that still feels pretty cool compared to the outside temps.

Wow that's crazy! I live in Southern California and our a/c stays on at 78. We have a 2 story house 1900 sq ft with vaulted ceilings and the upstairs does get warm but we also have an attic/house fan to help circulate the air.

@Mrs.Panda: um no that's not ok. I live in AZ and we keep our thermostat at 78. It will go up to 79 before it kicks on and cools it to 77.5 before it turns off. Your AC should not be allowing your house to be at 87 degrees if its set at anything 72-73. I'd be livid!

@Mrs.Panda: OMG bless your heart, 8 months pregnant in that heat!

I did not read all the responses, but your AC should be able to cool to 74 or even 72. I also live in FL,south FL, and we keep our AC at 76 and the AC unit does just fine. I think the unit they put in maybe isnt big enough for the size of house with vaulted ceilings (I have heard that can be an issue). I hope it gets better for you soon!

I would think unless the unit is seriously undersized, it should be able to keep it under at least 80.

We have 2 fairly old units to cool 2700 sqft but the living room is open to the second story and has a whole wall of west-facing windows. It typically gets to be 78-79 degrees in the afternoons with outside temperatures in the upper 90s (southeast Texas) with the temp set to 75 during the day.

@mrskc: I feel really silly because I didn't think to ask. I will ask tonight if they have information about that. Unfortunately I'm not sure if its the same company they will be sending out or not. DH called to.complain that no one had gotten in contact with us to schedule a visit after I placed another call today and the scheduler for the repair people lives on our street. He told her he hopes her house isn't 88 degrees right now. Hopefully that gets them moving.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right at all. It's upper 90's-100s here in the summer and we set our thermostat to 78-79 and our a/c doesn't have a problem keeping up. We set it to 76 when we have guests over and still no problems. We just had a new unit put in too.

Did they just replace the condenser? Sounds like your condenser isn't cooling the air. Did they do a duct check when they replaced it? It's required here. A guy came out after the new unit was installed to make sure our ducts weren't leaking too much air. Something is obviously not working right if it's just blowing hot air.

@Mrs.Panda: oh man, maybe it's the unit outside then since the duct is shared for both cooling and heating. I know you said they replaced the outside unit so I'm wondering if it's a wiring issue (rodents/bugs chewed through or the a/c people swapped the "plug" because that happened to us once. DH flipped it around and it was working fine again) or if your coils are dirty?

@Alivoo01: would the insulation impact the air being blown our of the vents? Even when it does blow when it gets hot like this, the air it blows is warm not cool. Is that because of the insulation in the ducts? Seriously I know nothing about ACs. Though this past winter the heat kept up but it only ever got down to the 20s-30s on super cold nights. Is there a seperate duct system for heat?

ETA we have gas heat and electric air, that's why I wondered if they have different duct systems.

Something's not right. I'm in Texas where we have been hovering around 100 during the day and the low 90's/upper 80's overnight. Our home is older, lacks insulation and efficiency. Our thermostat is set at 74 and we will sometimes get up to 77/78 during the peak of the day where our unit can't keep up. But at 87 indoors, I'd be seriously irritated.

@Mrs.Panda: It just depends on your builder. I agree insulation might be your culprit or a leaky window/door somewhere. We had an older home that couldn't keep up with a/c due to poor insulation. And in the winter, the heater couldn't keep up.

I don't think energy efficient homes really became a big seller until maybe late 2000's? Or whenever the government started offering tax breaks for people to make their homes more energy efficient.

We live in Central NC where is gets super hot and humid. Our unit doesn't have trouble keeping up unless we are in and out a ton, or have 20 people in our house. Are you renting an older house with crappy insulation? That may be a reason also.

We live in a single story house that's about 1500 sq. feet with SUPER tall ceilings in the living area and 10 feet ceilings in the bedrooms. Although we don't have humidity issues, it legit gets to 105-110F routinely here in the summer. I am 37 weeks pregnant and our AC blows at 72 degrees all day, 24/7, otherwise I would melt. There is no reason a single story house could not stay cool and if it got anywhere near 80 both DH and I would throw a fit.

We just replaced our ac unit because we added more square footage to our house. (I live in central nc, and summers are usually in the mid 90s)

Before our unit was undersized. My dh hates humidity so he wanted it to run more so that it would dry out the air. It ran pretty much all the time, and while the air was dry it couldnt really get the house below like 76.

We changed to a bigger unit and when the house was the same size (before the addition) the new unit ran almost never. It was super humid in the house, so we had to keep it at like 72 so that it was comfortable.

Now that the addition is done and the square footage is right for the unit it is comfortable. We keep it around 74 and it has no trouble keeping up.

So if your unit is the right size for your house and is working properly, there is no reason it shouldnt be functioning. They shouldnt have to add freon so frequently. Thats a quick fix to buy time, but it doesnt actually solve the problem i dont think.

And we don't have any tree coverage or anything. I feel like your rental company is just effing with you at this point.

I'm in South Florida. We set the inside temp 74-78, depending on who gets to the thermostat first. Our A/C turns on if the temp increases from what we set. It sounds likes it's always on to maintain the thermostat temp. We have window tints to help improve the insulation in the house and we have a new energy efficient unit, but the unit still runs all the time.

I don't know what's more important the compressor unit that goes outside or the thing inside, but when we bought a new A/C unit we got both.

Our old condo had an HVAC system that they didn't turn on until JUNE 15TH so every year for about a month I'd be a bear about it. Then at the rental unit we paid for electricity so we'd be paying hundreds of dollars a month for practically nothing... so frustrating.

The portable unit is a great suggestion! We have one window unit that is like a standalone one that doesn't show from the outside of the window, and it works even better than our window units. I think you can get one for a few hundred dollars and I'm SURE you could sell it once you're done!

@mrs. wagon: @MaryM: Those are good suggestions, but unfortunately I live in a community with a very strict HOA and window units aren't allowed. The portable unit may be a solution but at the same time I'm kind of angry I would have to do that when we pay a lot of money to rent this place as it is so I feel like the A/C should work! GRRRR!!

@yellowbird: They said they replaced the unit. I added it to the original post to include that as I forgot to.

@MaryM: We live in a single story home :(

Thank you ladies for making me feel a little less crazy. I admittedly know nothing about air conditioning units so hearing these pros say the same things to me over and over had made me feel like I was losing it. I am going to go full mama bear mode on them when they come this evening and luckily my husband will be home too (he hadn't been the last few times so I'm afraid the companies were just taking advantage of the fact that I'm a woman home alone who doesn't know better... which in this instance they are right...). We are bringing our baby home in just 8-9 weeks and this heat won't do!
