@BandDmommy: What about calling for police to patrol the street? If you know times that she tends to come and go you can have police set up a watch.

KIDDING
sorry, I am from Boston :silly:

If you find yourself in a conversation with her again, I'd mention driving slower because of pets, the kids, getting darker in the evening this time of year to really paint the picture. I like @Silva 's idea of telling her how shaken up you were, etc.

@sunny: I asked my dad about this very thing because I have noticed people speeding down my very residential road, the same road that one of our Elementary schools is on.

I learned that the town is very hesitant to install speed bumps for two reasons: plowing in the winter and because of emergency vehicles like fire trucks/ambulances.

I think @Silva: has really good advice. That seems like a dangerous situation for the neighborhood. I'd also make sure to say it was an hour the school bus comes and kids walk home., it's better to arrive late than never.

@Silva I really like your wording. As much as I dislike conflict, I'd probably want to go over and talk to her. If God forbid she does end up hitting someone, you would at least know that you did everything you could. I agree that there's probably not a lot you can do to change her behavior if she doesn't view it as a problem, but at least you will know you tried.

I am really confused about the fact that she doesn't know whether or not she hit you?! Is there any chance she could have been drinking or high on drugs/meds?

Its clear you feel like you should speak to her. I always try to be as genuine as possible in these interactions, so I might say something like "I was a little caught off guard when you called last night, but I have been thinking a lot about what happened. You were obviously driving really fast, and we nearly had a very serious car accident. I was shaken up and scared for a long time afterward. I know you would never want to hurt anyone, but you very easily could have in that moment."

She is likely going to defend herself, and so at that point I'd do my best to not engage in a debate, and just say "again, I know you'd never want to hurt anyone, I just needed to express to you how scary that interaction was for me."

What about getting a speed bump installed on the street? I've been thinking about asking the city for one. Some people drive super fast on our residential street too and there are so many small kids that live here.

Maybe I'm a jerk, but if someone is putting my family in danger then I have no problem saying something. (As polite as possible, of course :) )

@BandDmommy: unfortunately I don't think anything you say or do is going to change how she drives. How scary! :bummed: So, I don't really have any advice other than keep your eye out for her when out and about in your neighborhood.

We used to have a teenage driver that lived across the street from us that would fly down the road. One day our friend took an empty stroller and pushed it into the road as he was coming down the street. He freaked out of course, and slowed down for a while after that. Then went back to his regular driving...

This is nuts! It's not like some minor neighborhood tiff over a barking dog keeping up my baby. I would absolutely say something but wait until I've cooled down all the way and think really long and hard about how to say it in the most effective but tactful way possible. She seems out of control and I would sacrifice a relationship with this person in favor of not having my family members hit by a car!!! OR yes, maybe it would be more effective to have a police officer talk to her instead.

I would let it go, I feel like this woman will not change her ways, and it would just sour your relationship. However, I would maybe call the non-emergency police line and explain that high speeds have been happening in your neighborhood and ask if there is a way to maybe set up a radar? that alone could get them to slow down?

Wow, she sounds like a real class act. I doubt that talking to her about driving safely will have any impact, since she thought she might have hit someone but didn't bother stopping to check (wtf!!?).

Did you actually talk to her or leave a message? If it was just a message, I would probably call her back and act casual - "No, you didn't hit me, but you came close. I swerved into the neighbor's yard - hopefully I didn't do any damage." I would probably also make a comment like, "I'm the same way - always busy and running late, but with all the kids in the neighborhood, our close call really reminded me we have to be more careful." I know it's not your fault, but it softens the blow to put it in "we" terms. Not sure you can do much more than that.

ETA: Just to play devil's advocate, maybe she knew she didn't hit you, but it was an easy "reason" for calling you and "apologizing". It's obviously twisted because she didn't apologize, just made excuses - and making someone think you thought you hit them and still drove off is worse than just apologizing for driving recklessly - but maybe she feels guilty and wanted to reach out (in a strange way). She might not change her habits long term, but maybe your close encounter shook her just a little bit. Trying to be optimistic.

@Truth Bombs: : "I just think that if she thought she hit someone and still drove away because "she was late", then you talking to her is unlikely to actually make an impact."

This. I mean, who isn’t sure if they hit another car or not, and just keeps driving? Nothing you say is going to change her and it's only going to stir up shit between your families.

If you had to go up over a curb and onto someone’s lawn, you might get your car checked to make sure nothing on the bottom got scraped into.

I personally wouldn't do anything else since you already talked about it. If anything, I might text the neighbor and just say that you appreciate her calling to see if you were ok. And that you hope she slows down/ is a little more careful in the neighborhood.

I wouldn't go over to their house to talk to them about it, though. She's probably going to be really defensive (and so will her husband) and it likely will cause drama with other neighbors, since you seem to live in a tight knit community.
