I would probably also make a comment like, "I'm the same way - always busy and running late, but with all the kids in the neighborhood, our close call really reminded me we have to be more careful." I know it's not your fault, but it softens the blow to put it in "we" terms. She's probably going to be really defensive (and so will her husband) and it likely will cause drama with other neighbors, since you seem to live in a tight knit community. </p>
