I’d say exercise is great medicine! Personally, I dont like taking medicine while pregnant or supplements unless it’s a must so I usually go with exercising and my diet and rest. It has helped with my energy and mental load.

Hey is there anything maybe all natural or some type of supplement I can take to help my focus and energy. I have ADHD and I can't have anything like adderall. I have pregnant brain on top of my ADHD and that is just a disaster. I do make to do lists and stuff. I'm just needing an extra boost. I asked my doctor but he didn't really know. If there isn't anything then I can deal. I was just curious

I don't have kids but I teach 2nd graders with ADHD and some of my past students have been on concerta and I experienced the same thing with them. I had a student who wouldn't eat much if anything during lunch. I brought it up to mom and she said by the time he got home he was so hungry he would eat a lot. She didn't seem too concerned and knew it was the medicine.

As far as the mood swings and sleeplessness, I'm hoping you find a dosage that works well for your son. I had a student whose dosage would change constantly and her parents wouldn't give her her medicine consistently and it was just awful for her.

Good luck and keep us updated!

I started my LO on medication for his ADHD yesterday. The medication is Concentra at 18 mg for the first 2 weeks and then 27 mg there after adjusting as needed.
He has been moody with it. Playing with him tickling him yesterday his moods went from laughing and playing to crying with in seconds back and forth. It was literally as quick as snapping your fingers really quickly. He has had very little appetite eating a quarter of what he normally would eat. He is also having very little energy. His eyes looks like he hasn't slept. He slept last night but not very well waking up every hour for a few minutes. He also has been very grumpy. It seems to be working but I am not positive.
So after explaining a little for the moms who have experiences with children with ADHD if you medicate have you experienced this with your LO on medications?

Welcome! My sister went through a very similar situation. With the new health insurance laws mental health is required to be covered in parity, meaning that they are required to cover it with the same copays as physical health... So I'd check again. Also, an IEP will be very helpful to getting your child the help he needs at school. They will be required by law to give him the attention and support he needs.

Medication has changed the life I many kids I know, but it is just a tool, not a solution. Hope this helps!

@elijahsmama1108: I don't have personal experience, but I was a teacher, so I understand that this is a super tough situation! I'm sorry you have to worry about this. Does your son's school have a counselor he could meet with a few times a week? If you ask to have a meeting with his principal, they should be able to introduce you to the counselor, and set your son up with some behavioral counseling. The counselor might have some tips and tricks that can help your son better understand and express his feelings.

I am SO sorry I didn't see this sooner! My daughter, Ellie, is 6 and in first grade. She has been diagnosed with ADHD as well as being on the Autism spectrum. She has been aggressive with peers (this behavior has only been present since last year, so Kindergarten), but is more typically aggressive at home. I'd be happy to give you my contact information-- I am an oddball of a writer who gets really impatient with typing, so I do better by phone. My train of thought is an express, apparently. The most helpful thing for us so far has been getting connected with a parent support group (NAMI has chapters all over, and their support groups can be very helpful) and getting a social worker assigned to us. Having a social worker can sound scary, or might make you think of "being under investigation," but it's not been our experience at all. She has been such an ally to us in terms of figuring out what our options are, figuring out the financial aspect of things... Please let me know what else you'd like to know and I'll do my best to answer!

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Carrie, I am a mother to a single child a 5 year old boy who has recently diagnosed with ADHD, unfortunately it is extreme ADHD. I am married to my wonderful DH who is not my childs biological father.
Now onto my question: for the parents who have children with extreme or severe ADHD have you ever came across your child being mean to other children at school? My LO has been hitting, punching and even has kicked a classmate in the face. When we ask him why he hit the other child his response is always he was trying to get their attention. We, as well as his teachers have all explained many times that he does not hit or kick to get another persons attention that you tap them on the shoulder gently and say you would like to talk to them. He is in Kindergarten and unfortunately I do not feel that the school is taking it as seriously as they should. They just take a break away or something similar. My dilemma is that he is significantly larger than his classmates and that he could seriously injure another child if his actions are not taken seriously enough.
I have been considering putting him on medication for his ADHD to see if it would help him, but I have ran into the problem of his insurance as well as the state insurance does not cover his current prescription, and they do not cover psychiatric treatment and I unfortunately can not afford to pay for that treatment myself. What suggestions do you have?

@T-Mom: For us, there are good days and bad days with LO at a restaurant. Good days he sits still, eats all the food that's offered, and won't make a fuss. Bad days he'd shake, bounce, move around, SCREAM, and in general being a pain in the behind. We had lunch we friends before who has the same age babies (9 months) and they just sit there and eat and in general very well behaved! Whereas mine I'd have to work very hard to prevent him from flipping the table over.

@Sammyfab: We happened to know same age babies and they don't act like mine does. Mine is definitely crazier I'd say...

@winniebee: I guess you are right... not much I can do about it so might as well not worry...

He's been constantly like this since like 3 months old and has just gotten more "nosy.". I think he's more active than the average 6 month old because they comment on it at daycare. Also I tend to think little boys are even more crazy than girls. Not much you can do about it even if he has it though so why worry?

We had a really hard time with the high chair at that age. There is just so much to see and do at the restaurant that DS wouldn't want to stay in the chair. Usually one of us would have to walk around with him while the other ate and took care of DD. it's much better now at 14 mo, since he is much more into table food. I wouldn't worry just yet?

LO is always busy and super active. However I never really worried about ADHD until last weekend when we were at a restaurant. After we put him on the high hair, he "bounced" forward and backward THE ENTIRE TIME as if he's dancing to the music (or I should say it was more like he was possessed by demons, I am not joking), and was so busy turning left and right looking at people walking around. The entire time.

He usually finishes his homemade chicken porridge with broccoli (which would be 4 oz of food) plus some more table food. However that day it was so difficult to feed him he had 2 oz of food max. Then he babbled a bunch of stuff.

I basically went home and was so worried I looked up on symptoms of ADHD! And he's only 9.5 months so I guess we can't quite diagnose him at all.

Did you ever worry your LO has ADHD? Or does your LO have ADHD, and s/he exhibits the above symptoms when s/he was a baby?
