You also have to be careful because its 10% of full fare for that class, not the discounted fare.
I just paid $200 for LO's flight to England.

Yup, for international flights, you'll typically have to pay 10% of the adult fare + taxes (e.g. Sept 11th security fee, US immigrations user fee, etc.).

For domestic flights (including US-Canada), lap infants are free. Though I can't remember if the taxes are extra or not.

Each airline has different policies around whether or not you can check your carseat AND stroller, or just one item.

@shopaholic: definitely a good idea! I called BA about eight times before our trip just to make sure we had the bassinet! On one of the legs of our flight, they somehow stuffed it up so they upgraded us to premium economy so we could have the bulkhead AND additional leg room - bonus! Hoping for the same good luck for you! :-)

@Ree723: Thanks for the tips. I did request the bassinet & bulkhead seats on the phone today when I called in and paid for her ticket too. I figure I'll call the month before, the month of, and the week of our trip too. It can't hurt, except for the long wait times on hold! ;)

Yep, 10% of the fare + taxes is standard across the board for lap infants flying internationally. It does suck but that's the way it is.

As for the bulkhead and bassinet, I've always called the airline several weeks before our flight and have been able to secure them no problem. I've always heard it's essential to call ahead to get those seats and that's what worked for us. We flew Qantas, British Airways, and American on our flights. For BA and Qantas, you normally have to pay to select your seats ahead of time, but if you are travelling with an infant, you're allowed to select your seat early free of charge.

I'd call the airline back and request the bassinet seat now. I think if you wait until you get to the airport, it's too late.

Seriously seems like a way to get more $ out of you for really nothing extra from the airline. argh!

@zippylef: NOT cool on the bulkhead row that you encountered!

Yes, we were charged a percentage for lap child when flying internationally. I think it is standard? At least for Singapore air and EVA. Bulkhead was a blessing and a curse . No underseat storage was a pain. But the extra room to let DD walk around was great. She even slept on the floor on blankets. However... I was so jealous if ppl who had purchased a separate seat for their toddler. The extra seat helped so much and it looked so much more comfortable. Maybe with your small baby this wouldn't be an issue but we had a 20 month old and man it was rough. I also got rejected for a bassinet at the gate. I had requested it over the phone. They took one look at her and said she was way too tall, even though she was within weight limits.

I've never heard of a lap baby getting charged for a ticket! I hope other moms chime in.
We're flying to the states next week and I didn't have to pay extra for LO, but Canada/USA flights are probably different.

Um... yep. When I flew with C to the US and back, we paid 10% of an adult fare on the international leg. Lap infants are free on domestic flights. That was with US Airways. I'm pretty sure all airlines work the same way.

As for the bassinets, they are hard to get. Make sure to show up at the airport as early as possible because it's whoever checks in at the airport first that gets them. I got a whole bulkhead row to myself (didn't end up using the bassinet, just took her infant seat on with me) on my LHR to PHL leg and it was AMAZING. On every other flight, including PHL to LHR, I was able to finagle an empty seat next to me and was allowed to carry her car seat on with me. The people at the gate desk are usually willing to try and work something out. I think maybe they were extra helpful since I was traveling alone though (Heathrow let me to the front of the security line leaving and the front of the customs line coming home! Score!).

ETA: On my flight back to England, the bulkhead row was taken up by a group adults traveling with ONE child who was probably 3-4 years old. There were 7 infants on the plane, including one very small newborn. I was PISSED.

Also: Lap infants on international flights are entitled to their own checked bag! So look into that too. :)

Called Delta today to try and reserve a bulkhead seat with a bassinet for our trip to Italy this summer. Also needed to add K onto the reservation.

I knew that the bulkhead/bassinet seat would be unlikely to get over the phone (it's a first-come, first-serve, at the airport thing), but hoping for some tips from experienced moms on how to try and get it?

What I WASN'T prepared for was how long it took to get her added to my itinerary (over 1 hour on the phone!) AND that we'd have to pay a % of my ticket price so she could have her own international ticket just to be a lap-seat infant! $188 for her to just sit on me? I understand they need to issue a ticket for her, but WHY the charge? She doesn't get a seat. She doesn't get food. I don't understand. Someone care to enlighten me on why I feel like we just got gouged for more money?
