So glad you got to see the specialist and have some direction! My LO has had post-viral rashes but always on her chest/trunk so it didn't even cross my mind - but it makes sense for sure.

Update: went to the allergist today and she said she thinks it is not allergies, or a reaction to the cold, but caused by a viral infection. He had a few days of vomiting right before the hives showed up the first time. Apparently it can cause the mast cells (which produce histamines) to overreact for up to 6 weeks. So we'll go back on daily Zyrtec to wait out the rest of the 6 weeks and hope by the time we go off it again they're all gone.

@mrsrain: Sure! At each of their 2-year well checks, my pediatrician basically said to reintroduce with a tiny amount and monitor closely for a reaction. If there was any reaction, to wait 4 months then try again. My youngest was completely over it by 2, but it wasn't until around 3 for my other son. I should stress though, that they both had mild reactions in the first place or I would have waited for the all clear from the skin test. (It sounds pretty similar to your description, but just to clarify - they just had hives where the eggs had touched the skin, that appeared within 5 mins and disappeared within the next half hour, and no respiratory symptoms whatsoever.)

@raspberries: can I ask how you knew when they could eat eggs? This is exactly my son’s situation. He can eat them baked in anything but not straight eggs. Last year he still tested positive at the allergist. Did you wait for a negative skin test or did you give them eggs and see how it went?

My son has various allergies, food (ranging from mild to severe) and also environmental. When it's not a severe, instantaneous reaction, it can unfortunately make it harder to figure out the triggers...

I would definitely keep a food diary of what he eats to share with the allergist, and try to minimize the # of ingredients to make patterns easier to spot.

In terms of environmental, any new detergents, body products, etc that someone in your house started using around the time that this started? Using a free and clear detergent can help. A lot of stuff that's marketed as ideal for sensitive skin - i.e. Dreft - is actually full of fragrances that can cause allergies. Cerave and vanicream are the best for lotion, in terms of being allergen free. Mustela for body wash (not cheap, but kids don't use much of it). These were all things recommended by multiple pediatric dermatologists to us that seem to help... Cotton clothes/socks...Maybe a hepa filter in LOs room or have your hvac filter changed - I know it can fill like grasping for straws, but hopefully it ends up being straightforward for the allergist to figure out :goodluck: :goodluck:

@lindseykaye: I get the same thing with temperature swings and vibration. My temperature reactions is always in my hands - they swell and turn red and itchy. It usually goes away pretty quickly...within 30 min to an hour. That also happens when I'm shopping too...too many different fragrances or something! I also have to be careful trying on clothes, as I've gotten hives from that as well.

DD and I also get welts from mosquito bites. Not fun at all!

@lindseykaye: His typically go away with in an hour or so with or without medicine and are mostly his hands and feet, but did go up his arms/legs during the first bad day. Nothing showed up while on the daily zyrtec so I do think that was really helping with something. And I'm so sorry you still deal with the mosquito bite thing. I had hoped it'd be something my son would outgrow because my older DS had intense, but not nearly as bad, reactions around the same age and they've been gone for a year or so now. Either way you've given me so much more to pay attention to and ask the allergist about so I'm really grateful for your experience.

@JennyPenny: Yes, with the temperature reaction it can happen and go away quickly OR it can last for days/weeks and need strong oral antihistamines to treat. For the last several years I've gotten it on my legs and upper arms for weeks each January/February (when my area of FL gets it's coldest weather). If I go from really hot water washing dishes to cold water this can also happen but it's brief for me.

When I get vibration hives it's usually from running or walking and they show up in my thighs and hands. If I'm using a strong back massager I will get them in my hands and through my forearms. These go away shortly after the activity stops but I get red splotches that itch like crazy!

And I've been the same with mosquito bites for my whole life too - large red, hot welts. Often they will bruise if it's bad enough in certain areas or, I think, with different types of mosquitoes. Extra strength benadryl cream is my friend and I have it with me always.

@lindseykaye: Thanks! That is so interesting. So my son also has severe reactions to mosquito bites. He'll have large red swelling that's hot to the touch about the size of my palm around anywhere he gets a mosquito bite. If it's on his face (which seems to happen often- why!?!) his eye(s) will swell shut :(

For the temperature reaction, do you think it could happen just going from inside to outside on a cool day? We noticed this morning the reaction on his hands when we were putting him in the car to go to school (we park outside). Last time daycare called us having noticed it about 5 minutes after he was dropped off. The time he had a really bad reaction prompting us to go to the doctor he was playing outside barefoot on another pretty chilly day...

@JennyLayneAZ: This sounds a lot like my experience with hives/allergies. I didn't have any until at least 5 yrs (amoxicillin also, very severe hives) and then as a teenager I started to have hives reactions to tons of other types of antibiotics. I also have environmental allergies to grasses, pollen, and react severely to insect bites/stings. Additionally as an adult I've developed hives due to temperature swings (usually cold), vibration, and other physical irritations to my skin. Fun!

@JennyPenny: Yes, they're all the same family of fruits so while it's not guaranteed that if you're reactive to one you're reactive to all but it's possible. I don't know if there would be a delay overnight with the applesauce and an AM reaction, but it's not impossible. Sometimes reactions are immediate and sometimes it takes the body some time to begin processing the allergen before the reaction starts. For example, when we were figuring out my antibiotics allergies it was always after the first several days of taking medication that the reaction started but then it came full-force.
ETA: quick googling shows there is at least potential for strawberries and grapes to be cross-reactive as well. (https://www.livestrong.com/article/368207-list-of-foods-to-avoid-with-a-strawberry-allergy/)

I'm glad you have an appt. with an allergist - there are so many ways allergies can manifest and develop that it can be incredibly difficult to pinpoint the sources sometimes. Hope your little guy stays comfortable in the meantime!

The only time my LO got hives was after a round of amoxicillin (which she had taken a billion times before...). Benadryl helped. The dr wasn't convinced it was from the amoxicillin because she didn't have any of the other side effects, but, she hasn't had any since then and I won't give her amoxicillin anymore. Sorry you're dealing with this, its scary not knowing the cause.

I know for myself and my mom, we've gotten hives from seasonal allergies, detergents, soaps/lotions, etc. So, not from food, but environmental. It really could be anything. I hope you get answers soon!!

Both of my little ones that reactions like this to eggs - hives around the mouth, hands, and anywhere else it had touched skin. Luckily it was only actual, undiluted eggs and they didn't have a reaction if they were baked into something. They also both outgrew it - at 4 and 2.5, they can both eat scrambled eggs (if they choose to 😒)

Does anyone's LO have an allergy that manifests as just hives? If so, what is it that they are allergic to?

DS2 had a big outbreak of hives 2 weeks ago. We took him to the doctor and got an rx for daily zyrtec and a referral to an allergist to find the cause. He didn't have any more reactions while on the zyrtec, but we had to discontinue it to prep for the allergist appointment. Since then he's had a reaction shortly after breakfast both mornings. His big reaction two weeks ago was also right after breakfast. Yesterday I was convinced it was strawberries causing it, but he had none today and now the only thing all the meals had in common is milk. But he has milk with lunch and dinner and hasn't had reactions after those mealtimes... I know the whole point of the allergist appt is to figure this out, but it's not until next Thursday and I'd like to try and not give him whatever is causing this in the meantime, so I'm hoping for new ideas of things I could try avoiding.

I had that with all three pregnancies although it was actually better in bed as the fluid seemed to be able to drain then. What helped temporarily was putting pressure on my neck right below my ears. That seemed to slow the blood flow down a bit and I was actually able to hear the people talking to me. With my twin pregnancy I went to a osteopath and he showed me some stretches and while I was reluctant whether that was going to help they totally did. It was just a lot of streching of the neck and shoulders.

I get water build up behind my ear drums due to allergies. And it sounds similar to this but it can effect my balance. It only happens when my allergies are bad typically Aug & Sept. I just make sure to take my daily zyrtec and it stays away. So I'd try an allergy med first to see if it helps. Ive done it with both pregnancies.

Do you take steroid nasal spray like Flonase or Rhinocort? Both are otc/generic now. I took Rhinocort this whole last pregnancy, and since it’s locally acting there’s less worry than most meds. It might help??

It also could be worth trying sudafed - you can’t take it all the time in pregnancy but it does a great job drying things up and really helps my allergy related ear pain (when not pregnant I took it a lot). I can’t take it at night and still sleep but it doesn’t affect everyone that way.

I have pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear. It sounds like a constant beating heart/whooshing noise and my ear feels clogged. Depending on how I turn my head it gets better or worse (so when I'm in bed trying to sleep it's at its worst). This is most likely pregnancy related because of increased bloodflow, though I'm sure seasonal allergies aren't helping.

Any fellow sufferers? Any tips to make it better or GO AWAY? I am considering acupuncture- I was going monthly until I got pregnant, but the thought of needles in my front is making me sick and panicky(used to go for back/stress issues so I'd lay on my stomach and that didn't bother me).

Yes, same for us too - DS1 was about 6 months speech delayed and he has weeks where he's crazy and then his speech picks up huge. He's been using sentences and phrases that are totally new lately. But also threenager emotions, ugh.

@lioneyes: My BFF's oldest was delayed in speech, and this was her biggest sign that he was about to have a burst. It's like his brain is developing and can't process it all, so his behavior suffered greatly. It would happen for about 3 weeks, and then suddenly, it was like a switch flipped. He would be talking up a storm and his behavior calmed. She always knew that it was a storm she had to weather right before his language burst came.

To me, it sounds like now that things have started to calm down, he may just be releasing pent up emotions from all of the transitions . . . sort of like kids sometimes do at the end of the day after (daycare) pickup. It may be why he feels more comfortable staying closer to home and why he's unhappy going places he would probably otherwise be excited about.

Also, it couldn't hurt to have him seen by a Ped ENT or have the Ped re-check his ears. It sounds totally normal though--I hope it passes quickly and that you get your sweet boy back.
