Amorini prretty much covered it I think. Usually together with AFC (antral follicle count) an RE can predict how many eggs they can/should be retrieve for a stim cycle. I had AMH of 14ng/ml and AFC of 26 or 28, I think they just stopped counting at that point and would retrieve 20+ eggs on only 187.5iu stims. There isnt really a test for quality though. My FSH was 'normal' and most of my eggs always ended up being crap.

@Shantuck: it is in ng/mL

@Amorini: thank you for your information, this is just all so confusing. My son was a surprise pregnancy at 26 and we started trying last year after I turned 28 and haven't succeeded yet. It's crazy what a couple years difference makes :/

@Shantuck: makes a good point about the units sometimes making for confusion. I’ll just assume my units are the same as yours and share what I remember about my pretty AMH number. There is a lot of fuzziness about the interpretation of the fertility hormone levels and the results can’t be looked at it isolation, from what I remember. I think sometimes really high AMH, along with other indicators, can be a sign of PCOS but on its own, it’s not bad for it to be higher than 4. At age 39, my AMH was pretty high (around 6-7) and, given that my FSH was 9.8 or something, I was told that it meant that I probably didn’t have diminished ovarian reserve but that I might have lower quality. FSH usually indicates quality and AMH indicates quantity. Also AMH under 1 can indicate DOR and a low response to stims during IVF. Higher than 1 is better, but 6 might not be a whole lot better than 2-3, if you get what I’m saying, especially if your egg quality is good. For me, my high-ish AMH seemed to be a pretty accurate indication of quantity and also was consistent with my antral follicle count (decent number for my age). Later on during my IVF cycle, I responded really well to stims (produced lots and lots of follicles). Everyone was so amazed at my high numbers of follicles. They were that of someone 20 years younger! But once those follies were retrieved and fertilized, I only ended up with a few good embies due to low quality.

I also remember there not being a lot of good info out there about higher than typical AMH. I think they are still figuring it all out and haven’t been testing for it for very long as an indicator for fertility.

I FINALLY got my AMH results back after waiting almost 2 weeks. I see my doctor next week, but I'm trying not to Google myself to death. I am 29 and my results was 7.94, it says its normal ranges for my age group, but everything else I have looked up says 4 is the top end of normal.

What has been your experience with similar levels?

Also my other results from CD 3 was:
Estradiol- 31.7
FSH- 5.7
Prolactin- 11.4

@CECILIA: my AMH is also 0.03. My dr had me do 3 rounds of IUI's before moving onto IVF. Since all of my other levels are perfectly normal, and I am under 35, they said AMH isn't. Sole predictor of anything. We did our first round of ivf in April and got 9 eggs retrieved and 5 fertilized normally. Unfortunately, a couple of hours before we went in for our transfer, we found out that 3 of our embryos had arrested, and the other 2 weren't looking good. Theu ended up arresting as well. At our follow up appointment, the dr did mention thinking about donor eggs, or we could try another round ourselves. We decided to try one more round using my eggs in October, but we actually have a consult with a new RE tomorrow morning just to get a second opinion. I am currently taking DHEA (25mcg three times daily) and CoQ10 twice daily. I was told that I should take it for at least 3 months before egg retrieval for optimum results.

@Bluewolverine: congratulations for your absolutely adorable baby girl!
Regarding the AMH levels, I tested the theory with vitamind D deficiency. In my case, when i first tested both, i had AMH=0.03 and Vit D=13,5. Then i took 2000UI vit D/day for just over a month, and retested. Now my AMH is 0.134 (so 4 times higher, but still very low) and vit D is now 35.4. Although it's not much of a difference now for me, i would say vit D levels should be checked when AMH is this low. In my case, the AFC confirms the low AMH.
The doctor said we should TTC naturally a few more months and then, if still not pregnant, try IVF, although he said that with my low AFC (3) the success rate is somewhere between 20-30%. I am 26 years old. It's unbelievable to have such diminished OR at this age.

I conceived naturally with AMH of .66 -- my FSH and other labs were normal. I'm now 31 weeks pregnant (almost age 37). My AMH level was at age 35 - at that time, I'd already had DS1 (took 8 months to conceive with one miscarriage) and DS2 (conceived on second month). Before this (hopefully) successful third pregnancy, we had several early losses and we still don't exactly know why (but I was nursing and believe that was the cause).

As far as I can tell, AMH is not the end all and be all. Good luck!

Hello, I have very low AMH .3 and became pregnant on my own.

I also work in reproductive medicine, so have a little more knowledge then most. AMH does not indicate egg quality, it indicates potentially your ovarian reserve. Good news at 31 you are still young. You might not have a ton of eggs, but the ones you do have are most likely a good quality.

Good luck...

@cecilia: I also have an AMH of 0.03. Have you checked you vitamin D levels? I read so much about how vitamin D deficiency can influence the results in AMH. I am on supplements for more than a month now (to increase it from 13, to a minimum of 30) and i will soon go test and see if my AMH is any higher.
But then again, my AFC was low when i did the first AMH so it could be a real situation. We are actively ttc for 3 months now. Nothing so far. But i am not losing hope..yet

@Cecilia Hi, it's been a roller-coaster since finding out my amh was low in 2015. We visited a couple of fertility specialist and they all said the same thing, there's really nothing to do except wait. I don't produce enough eggs for IVF and clomid won't help since I don't have enough eggs. Last May I finally conceived, but it ended in a miscarriage due to a partial molar pregnancy. I have been on birth control every since the miscarriage because my doctor advised not to try to concieve again for 9 months. My husband and I haven't decided if we even will try again.

I know this isn't the best news but everyone is different and my story may not be your story. Hang in there and keep trying, if that's what you want. Patients is key! Best of luck!

I don't have PCOS, but it took me about 6 years to get diagnosed with endometriosis. I basically went to a new obgyn every six months during that time and it took all those years to find someone who would take my pain seriously. My advice is to be ruthless with picking a doctor, especially if you live in a big city. If they don't give you good treatment options, or options that you think will fit your life, then eliminate them and move on. I've had a couple of doctors since the diagnosis (i've moved a couple of times and had to switch) suggest medical menopause to me and it was never something I was willing to try until I found a doctor who was willing to discuss the side effects and a plan for how we would manage them. If there's anything about a doctor you don't like, find another. You'll eventually find one that will really help you deal with this.

ETA: I think there's a tendency to trust that doctors what they're talking about and know how to help. But the fact is that some are better than others about keeping up on current research and new treatments. And they're human too and can make mistakes. If the diagnosis doesn't sound right to you, get a second opinion or discuss those concerns with your doctor.

Previous posters are correct in saying it isn't a one size fits all diagnosis. Unfortunately, I have both PCOS and Endometriosis, and I'm just 18. I don't have any symptoms other than a confirmation via ultrasound and long cycles. That's it.

It can be really tough emotionally but it's a positive that you're fit and healthy. That is great for TTC when the time comes

Thank you so much for sharing your story, @pachamama! I came across another of your threads while googling to find stories of other women trying to conceive for a while who had pre-menstrual brown spotting. I have this same issue (brown spotting for up to a week before my period) and have been TTC for going on 10 months. I started seeing an RE early because I was so worried about the spotting. It is nice to see it can still happen naturally even with the spotting and less than ideal numbers, as I've been reading so much on threads about women failing IVF that I'm totally freaked out and depressed. I hope I can try to stop obsessing about this and enjoy other things in life. Maybe it will happen for me after all :)

@pachamama: Congrats, a very happy story!
I think some of the other posters are missing the bigger point of your post - that even when you're told it's not possible, miracles can happen. Whether you think it was relaxing or just sheer dumb luck, you wanted to share a positive outcome.
I don't like when people jump on the "relaxing worked for me" threads. You didn't say relaxing will work for everyone. But you feel it worked for you so why would anyone find that insulting?
(And FWIW I am an IF graduate, I have a 15 month old from IVF w/PGD. I spent plenty of time being bitter about people telling me to relax. But I think there's a big difference between you saying relaxing worked for you and sharing success from bleak odds, vs Fertile Myrtle who gets pregnant easily and has never had a MC telling me if I relax it'll happen).

Congratulations! I love hearing positive stories from fellow IF-ers. We've been trying for 2.5 years. I'm 35. FSH 6 (twice, once on CD3 and once after femara challenge), AMH 0.27, AFC was 10 5 months ago, now 16. 3 failed IUIs, so starting IVF (injections start Saturday). The AMH is so depressing, but thanks for a reminder that even with bad numbers, it's still possible.

Congrats! And thanks for sharing your story.

While obviously just relaxing won't get you pregnant, I do get what you are saying. If you'd been able to relax, you would t have gone to an RE at 9 months of trying. You would t have had lab work that scared you and led you down the road of intervention. You might have been blissfully unaware of your issues, and with enough time, gotten pregnant naturally.

Everyone's situation is different though, and infertility is a real thing. However, I do think sometimes, esp on these boards, that there's a jump to recommending seeing an RE, getting testing, getting in mess, etc. lab work and interventions aren't always a good thing. Because you can have abnormal labs and that still doesn't mean you won't conceive without intervention. Think of all the a normal semen analysis results out there...and try the truth is most of the #s don't matter that much since it only takes one.

Congrats!

I didn't suffer from IF but with #2 it took longer than expected and it really was the month I just thought it wouldn't happen, and when I had started focusing on other things. So although I get what others are saying (it's not like one can force themselves to relax anyway) I can also somewhat relate to that (less stress and a positive outcome.) Hope your last few weeks are uneventful!

@Trailmix: It's what worked for me though, ya know? Once I gave up control over the situation I think that helped.
