The answer for us was/is Miralax. Potty training has made the whole thing worse, and my never before constipated son has become constipated.

@pastemoo: poor boy! when I was you get I had some little problems with constipation. Even when I wasn't, I feared that I was going to be and that it was going to hurt. If he builds up for that many days it had to hurt a little, especially if it's that big. You can also try the fibre gummies. They look/taste like Jube jubes, if you get them soft enough he won't be able to hold it for that long and will eventually get into a better routine.

How tough. We are still struggling with poop (refuses to sit on the potty at 2.5, will pee on the potty), but this book helped a lot, DS1 is crazy about animals. Good luck!

@locavore_mama: I'm trying to find that part again. There was something on that! You're definitely right.

@MrsF: On the bright side... it isn't any worse with potty training than it was before! :) I suppose we could make another appt for just that. The last one was such a bust that I'm a little gunshy.

@pastemoo: That sounds horrible! We're not potty training yet, but when I mentioned to our pedi at our last appointment that M has occasional constipation she was concerned that she might have issues just like your LO is having when we do start potty training. I remember hearing about a friend's LO having the same problems and they were seeing a pedi GI to help them deal with it (I'm not sure what the eventual resolution was). I would probably make a pedi appointment just to talk about this issue so your doc will have to devote some time to it.

@pastemoo: I remember reading it and I thought there was a part that was about the psychological aspect of pooping?
Let me look because I think there was actually two series.

@locavore_mama: Yes! This is what @Leialou: was referring to. I was following at the time as well. I'm just frustrated becaue by that post he "isn't" constipated. He doesn't poop in a corner. He will poop eventually and doesn't hide but he just screams and screams and says STOP! STOP!!

@pastemoo: That's disappointing that they weren't really concerned. For what it's worth, I don't have any experience with this issue, but what you described sounds really difficult to deal with. I would be worried if I were in your shoes, too :( Hopefully they are more helpful at the 2 year visit!

@Leialou: I read the in s and outs of poop last year-ish and loved it, and signed up for the emails. I must be missing an important part though.
Technically he is "Not constipated" (type 4 poop))--he just hold it forever and hates pooping.

@T.H.O.U.: Right now there are stickers. We tried M &Ms but it backfired.
I need to figure something else out--good idea!
@meredithNYC: So you tried prunes, prune juice, and fiber filled foods> Here is a prescription for Lactulose. And then my son figured out what the medicine ws and refused all liquids and semi liquid foods for over a week (at 8 months). When I brought it up at 12m and 18m well baby visits they didn't think it was important and I didn't fight for him. I will ask again at his 2y well child visit (just over a month from now).

Short question: What do you do to help your toddler who has issues with going poop, and who screams when he thinks he might poop, and during pooping? I'm pretty sure they are psychological issues, not actual constipation.

Long story: He is 23 months old, and has issues with pooping since before 8 months old (when he was seen for his first "urgent" visit for bloody stool due to holding it too long). We have tried all kinds of fibrous foods and even constipation medication but the issue isn't hard poops... it's that he holds it on purpose. When his diet is more fiber filled, he takes a day or two to adjust and begins holding it again (4-7 days is the norm). He has been going on the potty occasionally since 8 months old so he can let some monster poops out (all these monsters are over a foot long and scare me). We are now starting potty training and he is equally resistant to pooping on he potty, in underwear, or in a diaper. Is there an age at which this gets easier? Is there something I can do to make him not hate pooping and not scream in anger every time he thinks he might poop?
