@cyoung I’m on Remeron which isn’t a typical antidepressant and it’s hard to find that much info on this effect.

@kce56: for me it’s been depending on the medication. I’m on ability and it’s doesn’t effect it but I was on Latuda (spelling?) and it made my prolactin levels raise and my periods mess up.

I’ve been on anti-anxiety medication for just over a year now and my periods have been all over the place. My most recent period came just 2 weeks after the last one! I had a bunch of testing done earlier this year (including an ultrasound) and am going back to my gynecologist next week but am wondering if any bees have similar experiences. I don’t even know if the two are related, maybe it’s just age (I’m 37).

@csross217: I was on a low dose too (I think 75mg???) so definitely call your doctor. Like you, I had no idea the withdrawal could be so bad! I had some Zofran left over from when I was pregnant that helped a lot. Hope you feel better soon!!

@Mrs. Bee: I think that's what I'll end up doing. My doctor said I shouldn't have a problem weaning off quickly since I was on a low dose for a short amount of time, but obviously my body isn't liking it at all. I have a call in to the office to see what I can do.

effexor is pretty powerful (compared to lexapro) so i would take a longer time to wean off of it than you did. could you go back on a low dosage and wean a little slower?

Basically what @Mamasig: said. I weaned off Lexapro twice - once with doctor instructions and once on my own (since I had already done it before). I think my dosage was only 20mg and it was easily a 23-3 month process. First off, I would call your doctor first. Second though, I think you're doing it WAY too fast. Some drugs are harder to wean off than others. Effexor might be one of them. If your current dose is 75mg, you might need to slow down the decrease. So go 50mg for close to a month before decreasing again. If you're experiencing withdrawal effects, stay on your current dose until you don't. So maybe 50mg for a month, 37.5mg for a month, 25mg, etc. Your doctor can also write you other prescriptions for smaller amounts while you go off it.

I had a very hard time weaning off effexor as well. It was a decade ago, so I don't remember specifics, but it certainly didn't last forever. One great thing that did happen was that afterwards my anxiety never again returned to the level it had been at before. Effexor permanently changed my brain in that way. I hope it's the only way, honestly, because that is kind of creepy, but still. The lowered anxiety persisted in a lot of ways.

Weaning off effexor is HELL. My doctor said for many people, it’s worse than weaning off *heroin*. My doctor ended up having to call me in an Rx for something else (can’t remember what) when I weaned off effexor because the side effects (especially dizziness and nausea) were so bad, and I had done a super, super gradual wean too (like 2 weeks at each step down, stepped from 37.5 to half that, then half that, etc.). I would highly suggest calling your doctor immediately to see if they can help during your withdrawal period, which can be long.

I have also weaned off Zoloft a couple of times, and it is nothing compared to trying to get off effexor.

I've weaned off of Lexapro twice. I forgot what dosage I was taking, but it was the minimum. Basically, I did it very slowly. If I remember correctly, I dropped my dosage by 1/4 about every 2 weeks. I had no side effects.

I think you need to do it slower.

Does anyone have experience with weaning off antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds?

I'm currently weaning off Effexor after being on it for about 6 months for some acute anxiety stuff. My doctor advised that I discontinue it since we're TTC. I was taking 75mg, then stepped down to 37.5 for a week, then every other day, now I'm off completely. It's been 3 days, and holy cow are the side effects miserable  . Dizziness, nausea, fatigue, brain zaps if I move my eyes too quickly.

Any advice on how long this will last?? It's terrible!

@fryxie: thank you. I've decided that I won't be taking the Xanax. I'm just praying and taking things one day at a time. We'll be leaving everything in God's hands and what shall be shall be. Yesterday morning was really hard for me, but my DH reminded me that my dad would tell me to cheer up, pray and keep going. So that's what I did. I still paused a few times throughout the day and felt a heavy heart. We also received my dad's ashes yesterday so that was surreal.

@ChasingARainbow: I am so sorry for your loss.

I don't think you mentioned it, but are you in any sort of therapy?

My dad had brain cancer several years ago (he died in 2009), and I totally know what you're saying about it hurting so bad it physically hurts. I went to my PCP at one point because I SWORE I had mono. It felt just like when I had it in college. I was physically achey and just felt...sick. When the test came back negative and my doctor told me he couldn't find anything wrong with me, I totally broke down in his office and he prescribed me xanax.

I told a friend about it (who'd also lost her father to the same cancer) and she suggested I go to therapy as well. The medicine was just a bandaid to deal with the pain for now. But I needed to learn how to cope with it through therapy.

DH and I weren't even married yet so we weren't TTC at the time, so I did find the drugs helpful, but eventually I started feeling numb while on them and weaned off.

I hope you have lots of support to help you through this really awful time. I know how much it can totally suck to have to deal with the new normal of a parent not being there.

I think a T-shirt quilt is an amazing idea. I made one for my dad when he was sick and I treasure it now.

If you need someone to talk to, feel free to wall me and I'll give you my email address.

It probably doesn't help much, but after my m/c and passing of my stepdad, I got pregnant most likely in his birthday which was n entire week early for my cycle. I truly believe it was a gift from him and happened when it was meant to. Sending you many hugs
