My asthma got bad at 10 weeks. My GP was useless and referred me to a pulmonologist who got me on advair. I was fine after that. My OB always said to call regular doc about asthma, but to keep him updated.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Good idea! The bathroom window is painted shut, but I cracked the windows in the bedrooms and turned on the bathroom fan.

@macintosh: if you're having problems, I might consider calling your GP to see if they have any creative solutions for making your home have cleaner air. The chemicals definitely sound like a contributing factor. I can't even wear perfume!

I know it's cold, but can you open your windows for a while? Just to circulate the air & air out your home.

@FliegepilzHut: I did use my inhaler but it didn't help much. You're right though, I'll call if I don't feel better.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Wow, that must have been scary! I haven't had any asthma checks since I had bronchitis with a fever early in my pregnancy, but it was my GP who treated that.

I'm already on Zyrtec, montelukast, and Pulmicort and Pro Air, which is what keeps me so well controlled. Some of those are category C, but as the doc says the benefit outweighs the risk.

I'd love to go out and get some fresh air, but it's 18 degrees outside and cold air is a trigger, too.

@macintosh: I haven't read responses yet, but here's my experience. I have asthma & it was well controlled until I got pregnant. Then it got bad, quickly, and was so poorly controlled that my OB threatened to hospitalize me. She said if I'm struggling to breathe then so is baby, and that's not good.

Who do you normally see for asthma checks? That's who I'd go to. Your OB should be aware, but I'd let them know Ar your next visit. They asked at every visit, anyway, how my asthma was doing - but they weren't who I'd call in case of an asthma attack BUT I'd call them to check to see if it was okay to take a medication.

For me, a combination of Zyrtec (at night), Benadryl (during an attack), a hot steamy shower (during an attack the steam was great!) and my emergency inhaler (category C for me but OKed by my OB) did the trick. I eventually needed a nebulizer which was scary, and went on to need Advair to control my asthma, which I still take. Pregnancy really did a number on me, both times!

Good luck!

ETA: go outside. Avoid the triggers!

@FliegepilzHut: I'm ashamed to say I don't have a peak flow meter. I didn't want to pay for one bc my readings are always pretty good, even with a flare up. I guess I'll see how I feel after they are done, since I can't really leave til then anyway.

@Mrs. Coral: There is definitely nowhere to stay. I could go out for a bit, but I'm exhausted from getting up early and all I want to do is nap when they are done.

What is strange is that I can't smell anything at all unless I go into the bathroom. My lungs are also very sensitive to allergens (dust, mold), so it could be that they are stirring something up. I can't wait til this is taken care of!

Do you have somewhere you can stay until the chemicals clear out? I think either your OB or GP would be fine, since the shortness of breath could be related to pregnancy. I also have asthma and around the same time got really short of breath, esp. when laying down. I found I could only sleep on my left side if I wanted a full breath of air.

I have asthma, but it was well controlled before pregnancy and hasn't been an issue so far during pregnancy.

In the past couple if days I've noticed that I've had more shortness if breath than usual, which I attributed to the baby growing up towards my chest cavity at 28 weeks.

Today I'm having work done in my crawlspace to clean up sewage (yuck!) from a main line plumbing backup last week. The work is contained in the crawlspace but they are spraying chemicals and I'm having a reaction to something. They even brought an air purifier because I told them about my asthma.

When should I consider calling my doctor about this? I'm thinking that once they are done I'll give it a few hours to calm down. Should I call my GP who manages my asthma, or my OB?

I have asthma and I'm almost 16 weeks with my first baby. I was already on a maintenance inhaler (Pulmicort) and Singulair so my asthma remains well controlled. I did get bronchitis early on and it took a while to feel completely better, but I'm good now. I'm able to exercise the same as before.

I would definitely check with your doctor if you're getting a flare up. Mine checked my pulse oxygen when I was sick and said I was getting plenty of oxygen and so was the baby.

My asthma stayed about the same with my first pregnancy. Right now during my second pregnancy, it's about the same. Luckily, inhalers don't effect the baby, so use it when you need it. For me, with pregnancy, being out of breath is the hardest, but it doesn't negatively effect my asthma.

I haven't noticed a difference in my asthma, although towards the end of pregnancy my lungs have been feeling squished so it's a little harder to breathe. I have pretty mild asthma, though, so I'll usually just take a few puffs of my inhaler if I need it.

Just make sure you're keeping up communication with your doctor about it!

I have asthma.

With my first pregnancy, my asthma became so horribly uncontrolled my OB threatened to hospitalize me. I was having trouble breathing. I got bronchitis, which definitely didn't help things, and had to take steroids. I was usingh rescue inhaler on an almost daily basis.

Even after delivery my asthma continued on that path, when it was something that flared up only when I was sick pre-pregnancy. My PCP ordered me a nebulizer that I used far too often and eventually I was referred to a pulmenologist/allergist who did allergy testing on me and who put me on Advair and Singulair, and advised me to consider allergy shots. We ripped up the carpet in our house instead and put laminate flooring in throughout.

The advair and singular combo works wonders for me. I also take Zyrtec each night. I haven't had an asthma attack in over a year.

I got pregnant a second time in December 2013 and had zero problems throughout that pregnancy.

To all those asthma mommas out there... how did you asthma change while pregnant? better, worse? I have a very mild form and I find myself using my inhalers more frequently, do you ever have anxiety over not having enough oxygen reach the baby?

Did anyone's asthma get worse in pregnancy? If so, how did you keep it under control?

I have very mild asthma (exercise and allergy induced)
I've probably used my inhaer a total of 2-3 times in the past 18 months and even so, it's because f coughing/wheezing not because of a major attack.

The past two days I've been coughing and wheezing a lot. It feels Asthma related vs illness related. If it doesn't go away tomorrow I'm going to call my doc...but wondered if anyone ad any stories or advice to share.
