At Trader Joe's this weekend in the checkout line, my 28 month old son lost his mind because he had to release his iron grip on a box of Cheddar Rockets so they could be scanned by the cashier...

I made sure he had a snack and a drink before we left the house, that he was well-rested, and I warned him that he would have to let go of the box for a minute but he could have it back once it was scanned (he knows this—we've done it before many times!).

But lord have mercy he looked as if he was being electrocuted—bucking and wildly whipping in the cart, barely missing his head on the product shelving. Screaming and crying and kicking. I heard gasps from customers in line near us, and I tried to stay calm but it was very humbling and embarrassing.

As I pushed my fiery child and our groceries to the car, I had a flashback to when I was pregnant with him—when I honestly believed that my child wouldn't be one of "those" children.

I can't complain too much because my 2 year old generally is very chill and sweet, but I can't help but laugh that the thing he melts down about the most is his desire to access grown-up cleaning tools, which admittedly we're kinda inconsistent on because it's pretty cute but he would run the vacuum all day if we let him (and teaching him he CANNOT touch the plug is another issue). Him sobbing "I WANNA VACUUUUUUUM" is pretty much a daily occurrence.

My 2 year old is occasionally VERY grumpy but the one thing he does cracks me up: he means to say "I don't want to!" but can't say "don't" yet, so he shrieks "WANT TO! WANT TO!!" when he desperately DOESN'T want to do something. For some reason it makes me laugh so hard.

My 2.5 year old is definitely in a period of defiance and a battle of the wills. Last week, I took her to the potty because she told me she had to go. I was cooking dinner, so I popped around the corner to check on it. For whatever reason, she climbed OFF the potty and took a poop on the bathroom rug.

Spoke too soon. This evening she almost completely refused to eat dinner because i told her she had to do it without her helmet on. Because if she leaves it on she chews on the chin strap and gets food on it. She'd already had the helmet on for over an hour. We had sobbing with her head on the coffee table, refusing to get in the high chair, yelling "I WANT TO EAT! NO! I DON'T WANT TO!" on repeat. All over a helmet. I guess I should be happy she willingly wears it when playing with the ponies.

DD2 is only 2.5, but she is a very emotional soul and also very sensitive to criticism. She's also the type to sob if her older sister cries. Lately, she does this cute thing where she just sobs, "I'm soooo frustrateddddddd!!!". So that's cute.

The cuteness keeps me from going insane from the frequent crying tantrums. Apparently she spends a large part of her day frustrated, so I have to imagine that's worse for her then for me.

@skipra uggh my 2.5 yo is like this. Sometimes if he's really well rested and in a good mood he can handle it. But like 90% of the time, God forbid he breaks off a piece of his granola bar or it crumbles or something... He flips out. And usually crushes up the remaining offending food with his hand while screaming and/ or throws it on the floor. Sooooo fun 🙄

@erinbaderin: sometimes I think *I* need to just stand and scream I can’t calm down!

Ugh my kids have tantrums over everything. I can’t even think of a good one. My high point of parenting was walking out of the chiropractor, carrying a 2 month old in her car seat in one arm, with my 2.5 year old just kicking and screaming at the top of her lungs, under the other arm. Through the gym where the chiropractor was located, past poor unsuspecting gym goers just trying to mind their business.

My oldest was so easy going that I can't even think of any major tantrums. My second is definitely more opinionated. He is almost 4 now so it is not as bad but I remember for the longest time that he would have the biggest meltdowns after he would take a bite of something it would no longer be whole. Screaming that his cookie NEEDS to be put back together!!! Like literally wanting his cake and eating it too and losing his mind when it just doesn't work that way.

O is not in a big tantrum stage, but boy does she have opinions. If you say something she doesn't want to hear she has a new habit of looking you straight in the eye and saying, "WHAT?" as if she didn't hear you. Needless to say my suggestion of eating breakfast first didn't sit well. He stood in the doorway of the bathroom screaming "I need candy! Open the heart!" :meh:

I have a 21 month old AND a 3.5 year old, so, we're kinda have the best of both worlds right now.

DS2 is throwing tantrums now and the collapsing face down on the floor while covering his face is a new thing. Its pretty hilarious (for a second time mom), but yeah, its hard to get him calmed down these days once he goes into a crying spiral. He needs like a good 15 minutes to perk back up and sometimes mama ain't got that kind of time. He also wants to do things BEFORE DS1, whether its diaper change or who gets their medicine first. Its always him sprinting while hollering "ME ME ME BABY ME ME ME ME!" Which of course sets DS1 off and they're crying about how gets the first dose of antibiotics.

DS1 is just super prone to mood swings lately. He'll be fine one day, and then the next day he's a complete basketcase. This morning he was apoplectic for DH because he wanted this one particular jacket with bugs on it and DH was like "its in the wash" and DS1 started screaming "I WANT IT! BUT I WANT IT!!! I NEED IT!!" It was so bad I told DH to check the dryer and thankfully it was clean and then he was totally fine, but its like WOW where did that come from??

Sigh. So much screaming these days.

I made cookies for the Valentine’s Day bake sale at school the other day. I had some extra dough so I made one bigger cookie for my 3.5yo.
He woke up from nap and I showed him. I said it was too big for snack but he could have half now and half after dinner. He cried. But then when I gave him half he cried harder and said it was still too big. So I cut the half in half (quarters) and then he was happy. I set the other quarter of a cookie next to him and said he could have it if he wanted it. And that made him cry because he DIDNT want it because it was too much. And then when I left the room he ate it. 🙄

A couple of days ago, DS wanted to push the stroller with his lunch in it. Not him, not DD who I was carrying, his LUNCH. I got a tantrum when I took his lunch out and put him in the stroller instead. I needed to get them to daycare to get to work.

We never had the terrible twos, but DS turned 3 a couple months ago and I feel like we're just now getting into massive three-nager status.

He has opinions about everything (not that he can communicate them super well) and is sooooo sensitive. Sometimes you just have to laugh! Like when he insists on wearing mismatching snow boots without socks. Or his swimsuit instead of pajamas

So what were your ups and downs of the terrible twos/three-agers?

No problem. Hope it at least helps come up with some ideas that will work for her daughter. I can assure you this is typical kindergarten behavior.
