I definitely had a wiggler too! We did a pack n play at the beginning and then ultimately we actually moved to a floor mattress in a safe room instead of a crib. I know that’s not the most popular option but it worked for us!

@karenbme: My 3rd baby did this! I would say it can be normal. I propped mine up against the bassinet. He was in a small one since we were moving. It may be because there is space in the crib etc… maybe switch to a smaller space like the PP mentioned??!

Yes. Both of my kids did this. If they aren't sleeping because of it, you could switch to a pack and play for awhile? Then if they hit their head on the side, it's that soft mesh instead of the hard crib?

My 2 month old squirms so much at night that she travels in her crib and sometimes bumps her face on the bars and wakes/cries even though we set her down in the center. Is that normal? My older daughter we would put her down and she would be in the exact same place hours later, even once she could roll/crawl/etc. so it seems crazy to me.

I’d go between 3-6 months and book a place that has a separate space that you can enjoy while baby naps. So this might mean a balcony/patio/terrace etc. there is a lot of napping at that age and you want to be able to relax, not stare at each other

We travelled at lot while both kids were (are? They still are) young, including living abroad for several months.

We are east coast based also

Jet lag for babies is real and sucks in both directly; you might also consider going north or south to avoid it. If you are going for less than a week....I wouldn’t even try to set a schedule.

I would go somewhere that you could have your own four walls (not a hotel room). My first has always slept horribly away from home (FOMO kicked in and she would just refuse to sleep..still does at 4 but now we can bribe her...) and I know we drove adjoining hotel rooms mad with her crying.

In your position I would rent a cabin in the Great Smokies or somewhere like that. Tons of stuff to do, but also not a total waste of a trip if all you get/want to do is stare at the scenery from a porch because LO isn't a great traveler.

Just fair warning when booking when baby is really young:

Babies tend to reach a peak of crying around 6-12 weeks. You can find graphs online that show this. My first screamed for hours everyday around this time and it was really challenging. The amount of nosy people who commented to me: "Oh does he have colic?" with such pity in their tone was so annoying. :crying: It was over by 3-4 months and he became so much more manageable and has been pretty darn easy since. All this to say that if you do wait until baby is here to book trips, you never know what they will actually be like once the trip arrives. Don't get too scared in those early weeks because things will get so much easier. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet, book that trip and hope for the best!!

@karenbme: we waited to book our trip until E was 6ish weeks old like @PurplePumps: suggested. By booking so close to when we were traveling it limited our options but gave us good deals. If you are really looking to go when baby is 6-9 months you could easily wait until after baby is born to book anything. Daydream now and do research on multiple places then book in December.

@karenbme: You still totally have enough time to wait and book until you see what she's like. Sounds like most people do just fine traveling with their babies and they adjust and sleep well/as needed. I think mine is an especially awful sleeper and fussy (unless everyone feels that way sometimes) haha. But seriously, I would have never survived any sort of site seeing trip... I've had to leave mom meetup groups cause he wouldn't stop screaming from being over tired but not being able to sleep a few times when he was 5-10m old nevermind trying to enjoy a museum or meal with that. If he'd been a easier kid at home to start with, I probably would have tried.

@periwinklebee: @purplepumps: Totally fair points, I have no idea what this kiddo is going to be like. DH and I were opposites as babies (he was super easy, I was fussy and didn’t sleep) so she could be anywhere in between.

@graceandjoy: @jhd: That was also our thought, but the flip side is that MIL is extremely extroverted and can be totally exhausting for me as an introvert. Plus it would be nice to have some family memories that are just the three of us.

If you can do it in the 3-6 month age instead I would. My second was crawling at 6 months and walking at 9. It was not a good age for travel. Both mine were harder to entertain at that age. It was much easier when they were just a little swaddled dumpling.

I agree with many others- go where YOU want to go. The nice thing about babies is you can take them pretty much anywhere. You can still go to museums and nice restaurants and it's no big deal because they can be in a stroller or carrier. Once they get a little older that gets harder (toddler/preschooler age); then by elementary age you end up taking their interests into consideration as well.
We have traveled with our kids at all the different ages...by far travel with one kid is the easiest, and the trips we took when our first was a baby were the ones we got to do basically everything we wanted to do (within reason of course).
Also, and this is just a general tip...we have had all kinds of sleepers- good/bad/ crib only/stroller only and everything in between. They all figure it out somehow when we are traveling. Worst case, they get super over tired and get back on routine when you get back. We've done that too and everyone survived. :)

we have also been really lucky to have pretty decent travelers. only thing i would say is that if you are finding yourself looking at those 6-8 hour flights, vs. 2-3 hour flights, i would aim to do it on the earlier end of 6-9 months. i traveled with both littles around 3 months and it was soooo nice and easy. they're so sleepy, easily take bottles, and generally not mobile. by 9 months you have a baby who is crawling or close to crawling, they are much more alert and want to be everywhere. we have taken both my daughter and son on planes when they are around this phase or older (basically i feel ~6 mos - whenever they have stamina for screen time, probably about 2 years is the most challenging) and it was OK, but the plane ride was EXHAUSTING because you're working to entertain them or keep them in one place but happy the whole time. alternatively if you are less cheap than me and pay for a seat for them and can strap them into a car seat, it's probably a lot easier and you have a better chance of a good nap.

we took our DD with us to Zion and Bryce when she was 3 mos old and it was delightful. we did have to skip the tail end of angels landing and only one of us went to the narrows because we didn't feel it was safe to take a carrier in either place, but we stayed at an airbnb and were able to just pack her along with us on a lot of the day hikes.

We personally have felt that traveling with our son has been a breeze. We went to Belize when he was 4 months (3 flights in one day  ), Europe when he was 10 months and Mexico at 15 months. Lots of domestic trips in between. No regrets. We've had a blast on each one and he did great - even with the Europe time change.

My key has always been sticking to wake times. So on our first day in Europe he just had an extra nap in order to extend his bedtime to be more in line with their night time hours. Before a year their naps are typically fairly quick so we'd usually do one in the crib and one out and about in the stroller (with it covered with a blanket). The Tula carrier (with a hood) is also awesome for on-the-go naps and sleeping on the plane. We always stay in AirBnB's. Hotels are just trickier because he can see us and then we all have to go to bed at the same time. Plus you will really want even a small kitchen to wash bottles, keep little snacks, etc. Sometimes the first night in a new place results in a lot of crying, but it's always sorted out. We usually go with my parents so the baby to adult ratio is quite high  . Plus we switch off having date nights. I actually think our hardest trip was Mexico (even though that was just lots of pool time) because he was just learning to walk so someone had to follow him constantly, but also had no attention span to sit and play at a restaurant. Now that he's 2 he can sit for a longer period, watch a movie on a plane, listen to directions, etc. Is it harder than traveling with just my husband? Of course! But absolutely worth it.

This is where we were last year too. We traveled a ton pre baby and everyone said it's easiest to go before they are mobile, etc. My son was born end of sept and I had this great notion that we'd continue and go to Scotland, close flight from east coast, and just make it a slower pace than our usual travels. Well, turned out my son was an awful sleeper and napper. He was still waking 2-3 hrs overnight, had trouble falling asleep, didn't nap on the go, screamed like mad once he was tired though. We never ended up booking that and couldn't even imagine enjoying it at all. We stuck with beach trips where we could easily work around naps and not feel the need to site see. Flights were the easy part, he flew at 6,9 and 11 months so far and it wasn't bad, its just the darn naps.

@periwinklebee: oh yes we wanted to keep our flights at the 3-4 mark for a reason. And are only now considering 5ish hours.
Also if you can afford it cough up the money for a seat, they cant lose your carseat if your kid is in it in a seat and it gives you a place to place the baby. E stopped being good at chilling in my arms at around 5 months.

I personally would stick with somewhere that's a direct flight and low key.

I've traveled A LOT pre-kids, even had a year where I commuted cross-country every week, and always found travel easy. Maybe it's just bad luck, but I feel like every time I've traveled with my son it's been a huge headache. First trip was 4 months old - I had to go to Spain for a work trip via Portugal and was traveling solo. TAP is seriously the worst airline ever - they cancelled my connecting flight from Lisbon to Spain on the fly because it wasn't full enough, left me stranded in the Lisbon airport for 20 hours after a red eye, and lost my stroller to boot so I couldn't put DS down the whole time. Right after that was a west coast trip for work, direct flight so not bad but United Airlines managed to somehow lose my stroller and carseat that I handed to them tagged at the end of the jet bridge. After that, we've had better luck with airlines, but DS developed a strong propensity for air sickness and has puked all over us every flight since then. He also detests the car (and sometimes gets car sick). And has a number of severe food allergies that make eating out really difficult. Not trying to be a downer, but I also feel like people who want to and can do all kinds of extended travel with their kids have kids that are good travelers. And you just don't know til you try whether this will be your kid. So I'd want to start out by not being too ambitious... Maybe California would be nice - their summers are way better than New England because its much less humid...and much less jet lag than Europe...lots of good hiking too...

@karenbme: The first time was just before I went back to work after maternity leave and it was really great to be someplace warm as a whole family. It kept me distracted from the reality of the logistics of going back to work and pumping and allowed for some good quality time. It also helped remind me that we would still do the things we had always done. We are outside of Philly so winter weather can be iffy but probably not nearly as iffy as yours in New England.

@snarkybiochemist: Warm weather in late Feb/early March is our usual MO, too, but I’m not sure I want to commit to a trip at that age esp. with weather delays/cancellations a real possibility. Thanks for the tip on carriers, we were actually gifted two Ergos, so hopefully we’re in good shape there.

@krispi: Good point about napping on the go. I have my fingers crossed that this baby will inherit DH’s ability to sleep any and everywhere, but if she’s more like me we’re in trouble. 😉

At that age, just keep in mind you'll still be doing several naps a day. And some kids are better napping on the go than others. We found that beach destinations worked better for us after we were down to just 1 nap a day, otherwise there's too much in and out of swimsuits and clean up, but it doesn't sound like that's what you're considering. We also prefer to have a 1 bedroom suite with kids who nap. Even if they sleep in the bedroom with us, we can still have the living room to hang out in while they're napping or if they go to bed earlier than we do. Our daughter tends to have a harder time falling asleep when we're all in the same room and Mommy and Daddy are reading or whatever while she's trying to sleep.

At that age it really is easy to take them pretty much anywhere. My boys have been to France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal when they were small. I think the best trip was to Italy. We stayed at a villa kind of in the middle of nowhere in Tuscany and took day trips to cool cities and towns around. At that age they were still great at napping on the go and nursing was no problem. Italy was also especially good because the people there are very kid friendly. So we had lots of help from strangers which was a nice plus.

We went to Miami just before E hit 3 months old (b/c I didn't want to deal with a passport so early) and the Bahamas at 15 months (when I sucked up and applied for a passport). We like to take a longer warm weather vacation in February and then do shorter vacations scattered through the rest of the year. So far traveling with E has been pretty easy. I would highly recommend taking your first vacation as a family of 3 being just you guys, but I am an introvert who has a complicated relationship with traveling with others. I would also invest in a good quality carrier (loved the lilliebaby) both for carrying through the airport and so you can still do some more adventurey type stuff at your destination without worrying about weather or not your stroller can get someplace. As for destination, pick someplace that sounds good to you and your husband. Depending on how good of a on the go napper your baby is you might need to make a few changes to how much you do in a day. Similarly if your baby needs their own room for sleeping I recommend 2 room suites or air bnbs. E tolerated being in a room with us in a hotel until about 8-9 months and then started to have a really hard time with it.

Highly recommend the facebook group Dreamers, Drifters and Diapers: Have Kids, Will Travel for these types of questions. But I basically think you can take a baby anywhere, so just choose where you want to go and do it. You're right that you may need to scale back some, but I find it really easy to travel with infants.

Hello all. I'm getting ready for my first to be born this fall, and also thinking about starting to plan some travel for next year (we had to cancel a planned trip to Switzerland that was supposed to be this week due to pregnancy complications  so I really want to put something else on the calendar). DH and I really enjoy travelling and don't want to stop just because we'll have a baby in tow. A few friends have said that the best time to travel with a baby is when they're still relatively non-mobile, so we're trying to plan something for next summer when baby girl will be 6-9 months old. We're generally not resort people, and like to explore a destination independently. That said, we recognize that a 70 mile hiking trip through Glacier NP or getting on a rickety ferry for a 3 hour ride out to an island somewhere is probably not ideal with a baby.

We're based on the east coast of the US (usually fly from Boston or Montreal) so either the West coast of North America or Europe are usually within about 6-8 hours flying, which seems like a reasonable limit with a little. We've thought about Ireland because MIL is first generation Irish, and would LOVE to come and explore/help with the baby. But I'm also not sure I want to have MIL tagging along on our first vacation as a family of three. Vancouver/PNW has also come up since we have friends out that way that we haven't seen in too long, and would offer some of the outdoor recreation that we love without putting us in the middle of nowhere.

Thoughts, tips? I'm open to almost any suggestions at this point. The one exception is that I prefer at least as warm as New England (sorry Iceland/Alaska fans, if I'm stuck here all winter with a tiny babe I don't want to lose part of my summer).
