@sweetooth: Eh the closest are not that big, maybe 80", which is why I want all the extra rods and stuff. It's your typical shallow closet with bifold doors (but we took the doors off for now).

@Smurfette: That is a great accessory! Unfortunately the previous owners of this house outfitted the tiny closets with wire shelving units and didn't leave any full-length hanging space for something like that. Maybe there are some half-height options though. Thanks!

@anbanan15: I'm jealous of your closets that are big enough to do that kind of organizing in! Our closets in the kid's rooms are pretty tiny. So that's why my storage options are under the crib, in the dresser, and in the closet. That's a great reference photo. I'd love to utilize a closet like that for my kids.

@Anagram: We still have a lot of random stuff in the closet that is currently in our future baby room. But our storage options are limited too. Good luck with your shuffle before LO #2 :) I think I'm going to make a big dent in my kid clothes organization this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the tips and tricks!

@blackbird: I may have to look into those space-vac bags...hanging things in order of color would make the designer in me very happy. But hanging tiny clothes isn't my idea of fun :) I'm terrible at putting away the baby laundry!

@Smurfette: I think having a "outgrown" bin ready and waiting in the closet is a good idea. I need to do that. It's hard to know how things will work out with the sizing of clothes and my two boys. But since I will have two boys, I definitely need to make things work as long as I can. Glad you have a system that works for you!

@youboots: In our current dresser the top drawer is diapers. Our dresser is our changing table and I like to keep the top of the dresser as clear as I can. I think this will remain, and we will just keep the two different sizes separated somehow. Newborn and size 4. Second drawer will be for clothes being worn currently - easy access. And then the bottom will be PJs and sleep sacks and swaddles. I think I'll just have to plan an overflow system in the closet because the dresser drawers can only hold so much. And yes indeed, the nicer stuff gets hung up. Luckily for a boy, that's mostly just a few button-up shirts.

I have to re-work the closet and dresser in my LOs room before LO #2 comes, too.

My problem is that half of LOs closet is currently taken up with random stuff--toys, sports equipment, paint, blankets--because we only have two closets in our whole house.

So I think step 1 is going to be buying a wardrobe from Ikea to go in our master bedroom and moving all of the extra stuff out of the girls' closet.

Then I'm going to get the double hanging closet bars like this for each side http://www.amazon.com/Richards-Homewares-Commercial-Closet-Doubler/dp/B000KFZE74/ref=pd_sim_201_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=09PZAXYZGCB538J3PYEM

So Lo #1 will get one side of the closet and Lo #2 will get the other.

We just have a 3 drawer dresser, so I plan to put baby stuff in the top drawer closest to the changing table, LO #2 will get the second drawer and the bottom drawer can be baby blankets, sleep sacks, burp clothes, towels and stuff like that.

Maybe I will buy some drawer organizers, too. Ugh, so much to do!

I'm currently redoing their closets. I am putting 2 stacked trofast units from ikea in the middle for clothing and one off to the side for toys. I'm doing a long bar across the top on both sides to hang clothing and two more on the one side for more hanging space and a shelf on top of each. Something similar to this. I wanted to do the toy box instead of the other trofast unit, but let's face it, it would never get built. The rest of their clothing is in a dresser and storage bins for the sizes they outgrew.

Everything is in big tupperware bins. I keep the empty one for that size in the closet. So as she out grows them I can put in the bin if I am keeping it. Otherwise it goes in the Goodwill bag in the closet too. Once I think she is starting to move up a size, I get the next bin from the basement (full of hand me downs, or when I find things on sale), wash them, and start putting in the drawers. Figure out what she does need. All shoes are kept in one tupperware too in the basement. As she outgrows a pair, I bring them down there and add to it.

She has a couple 3T outfits that fit like a 2T so I keep them in the 2T bin.

If we don't have another girl, someone is going to clean up with all the clothes we have saved.

@youboots: That's definitely another layer to it. There are favorite clothes, and daycare clothes, and clothes I don't mind if they get messy, and clothes that I like to keep nice for photos. Too many categories :) I should definitely follow your lead and have a consignment-ready bin so I can cycle clothes to that and move them out of the house when the time comes. Thanks for sharing your system!

@Adira: We will be done having kids once our second son is born too, so I was hoping I could just make the bins and things that I have work for me. I think labeling is key. I don't know why I ever thought "new mom brain" or "pregnancy brain" would allow me to remember that things in the closet are bigger, things under the crib and smaller, etc. Thanks for sharing what works for you!

I have a six drawer dresser- for clothes in her current size the top drawer is clothes I love, the second drawer is backup clothes and a third drawer is sleepers. I also store cloth diaper stuff and accessories in it. I also hang a few items on hangers. For future sizes I have them in a clear plastic tub- right now I have 3-5 mo 6-12 mo, 12-18 mo, and one for anything larger.

When she grows out of outfits I have a bin for that- I sort it in stuff I want to keep (2 gallon zip locks), consignment, stuff to return to people that loaned to me. So far it's working great.

I have these plastic bins that I keep clothes in. I label them with the age range, so like "NB - 6m," "6-9m - 12m," etc. Then I put them all stacked in the baby's closet with the smallest clothes on top. When the baby needs the next size, I pull out the bin, wash the clothes, and put them in his dresser. Then I can use the empty bin to store clothes that my older son is growing out of and just relabel it. And the clothes my younger son grows out of gets donated since we're done having kids.

I think I've been in denial about how many clothes we have in the house for our son. I need a system that works.

My first born is 19 months old, and I have been cycling out his clothes form the dresser to various bins in his closet and under his bed. I have been really lazy about it.

Our second son is on his way. He will be in different clothes in different seasons than our first-born, but I haven't gotten rid of anything because you never know.

But now I'm drowning in tiny clothes. No system in place. I only know that I'd still like to have the clothes that are currently being worn by both boys to reside in a shared dresser. And I need something that can help me keep future clothes for both boys in a place that I know what's where and what size, etc.

What system works for you? Do tell - I'd like to try and get a handle on this before baby #2 arrives!

I get cheap Walmart ones often! They zip and are like $4!

I also like Carter's and the Costco brand.

@Apex: Classified ad is a great idea, thanks!

Unfortunately carters and old navy all only go to 6-9 months and run small. :crying:
