@trixi: Please do report back if you are able to contact Motorola - we're having a similar issue with our parent unit, the plug needs to be at just the right angle to connect.

Our solution probably won't work for your situation, as our two share a room, but we use the Motorola with two cameras, and manually flip between our son (5.5) and daughter (15 months), usually keeping it on our daughter. The nice thing about sharing a room, though, is that we can still hear our son when the monitor is on our daughter's camera.

@ChiCalGoBee @Littlebit7 I did consider splurging for the nest cams, but also thought then we'd have to download the app on an additional tablet to leave with a babysitter etc. But, I think we'd be able to do that.

Does the app run all night on your phones? Can you use other apps while it runs? Do you have to pay for a subscription to their app?

@trixi: just to offer a dissenting opinion: we got a dual camera video monitor 3 years ago when we moved and were expecting baby #2. We have used it pretty much every night for the past 3 years and I am happy with it. We have it on the switching between two cameras all night as my older child sleeps on a different floor from us. I had the same worry about the noise difference but I have been able to solve it by putting both cameras very near both fans so the sounds are basically the same. I sleep through the switching all night without a problem. I don’t remember the model but we basically just keep it plugged in next to the bed so we haven’t had issues.

I'll echo @Littlebit7: with the Nestcam option. While we're still waiting for #2 to actually get here, I've known friends who have used them for two kids and said it's been great. I can't tell you how helpful it's been when we've left our son with a family member or sitter and he's having a hard time settling. I can pull up his came on my phone and give advice very easily since the camera is accessible to me anywhere I have WiFi or 3G. We got the newer version for our daughter and I'm looking forward to testing it out to see the improvements they've made!

For what it’s worth we have issues with our summer infant plug as well. They won’t do anything because it’s out of warranty. But as long as i wrap the cord under the stand it will charge appropriately so it’s a non issue now that i know how to deal with it. We’ve had this monitor for 3.5 years without issue. And i believe we replaced the battery once.

@trixie same problem with motorola but just returned to Amazon (a year down the line)

We tried 5 different monitors before returning to motorola and going with two separate (nannyshare) - it's much easier than the scrolling

@trixi: for what it’s worth I found Motorola customer service abhorrent, and those micro USB ports break so easy on everything.

We have a Motorola that scans between camera but I never use it because the screen won’t go black. What I want is a monitor that goes between rooms but only turns on if there is noise. Also in split screen mode there is no sound from either room so we ended up with 2 monitors

We went through THREE Motorola monitors for my first son. Terrible product, in my opinion.

We got the InfantOptics DRX9 or whatever it’s called when we had our 2nd (now 3 months). We love love love it. We got one camera before baby was born for my older to try it out because our third Motorola bit the dust. That was about 3 months before the new baby was born. So 6 months in and zero complaints. We have 2 cameras and 1 parent unit. It scans between the rooms and honestly I think it’s perfecrlu fine. I was worried about not hearing both of them at th same time but it’s a nonissue.

@Shantuck I thought of contacting motorola. The battery is not really the issue, the issue is the plug to the parent unit, we have it duck taped to it because it won't stay in, something inside the parent unit is not clicking like it used to and staying plugged in. I will email customer support and see what they say.

Did you know you can replace the battery in the Motorola and perhaps get some more life out of the one you have? My Motorola was pretty much like what you described after 3-4 years of use so I pulled out the battery in the parent unit, entered in the type in an Amazon search, and then ordered a replacement battery. The unit was practically as good as new after that. Just a thought if it is cheaper to buy a second camera and continue using the model you already have....

We started with two separate video monitors. It didn’t work for us. The two monitors interfered with each other. We have a summer infant system that we keep on scan. We have the noise issue but it’s tolerable to me and doesn’t bother me much. Our kids have different white noise machines and there is a pause for a split second as it scans between cameras.

And regarding the plugged in all the time. We had that issue. A new battery resolved it for us.

@trixi: It's so easy and honestly, audio monitors are SO much cheaper than trying to find another system that works. I don't regret how we made it work at all. I just couldn't sleep with the noise switching on the video parent unit. It was driving me crazy. Plus, this way, we won't miss our daughter saying she needs us. That was my fear is that she would call out, the monitor wouldn't be on her and we wouldn't know that she needs us.

Similar to @northstar we are planning on using two separate units.

DS is almost 2.5 and the Motorola we have for him is not the greatest but I don't leave it on all night or day anyhow. It is more to peek in on him and we likely will just go to an audio monitor if it does die.

For the baby I picked up an Infant Optics that is leaps and bounds better than the Motorola so far (I used it for DS for a while but just recently moved it since the baby is due any day).

Definitely not what you were looking for but the switching on one monitor was going to annoy me and the quality of the Motorola was deteriorating so I thought it best to just do two separate monitors.

@trixi: I'm not so sure anything exists where you can hear both at the same time. I searched forever when we had DS 15 months ago. We have an almost 6 year old and a 15 month old and this is our setup:

*DS - 15 month old - has a Motorola video camera in his room and we use our parent unit to constantly "watch" / hear him.
*DD - almost 6 years old - she also has a motorola video camera, but we only use it if we need to check in on her to see what she is doing. Otherwise, we also have an audio only unit in her room to constantly hear her.

The reason we had to do this is when it did the auto switch between video cameras, we found it EXTREMELY annoying. just like what @Mommy Finger: said. One white noise machine was louder and the sound changing between the two was too much to handle. Plus, we wanted to be able to constantly hear both. and now we can. It's just that we hear DS on the video parent unit and DD on the audio parent unit. Yes, it's annoying to have to to carry around two units, but it's worth it to us. I manage DS's since I still deal with his wakeups and DD's is on my hubby's side of the bed as if she wakes up (which is rare), he is tasked to deal with it.

Good luck!

I don’t know if it’s in your budget, but we love our nest cams. I was really against them to begin with. We had a foscam security monitor we used with apps with our first and it was great (if a bit clunky) when it worked. But it was unstable
We got a nest for our second and just added another nest for my older kiddo. It runs across every device we have, we can run the app on our tv, we can run it on our computer
I know some people like a physical parent unit which I understand.
I also really like the plug and play aspect. We are currently living in Europe and we have been jumping from air B and B to air B and B and it’s SO easy to set the nests up

We have a summer infant one that scans between both rooms every 8 seconds. I'm guessing it's similar to the Motorola. I liked it fine. I wish there was a split screen where you can hear both rooms at the same time. It was a little annoying when it scans as we use white noise and one room would always be louder than the other.

Probably not the response you want, but we really like the Motorola for this. We had the one in the baby's room setup close to the crib and the one in the toddler's room setup in a corner so it can see most of the room. And then the monitor will auto scan between the two rooms every 10 seconds (or you can view one room at a time, which is what we do now, three years later).

We do have to have the monitor plugged in at all times, but we basically just keep it by our bed anyway.

I'm on the hunt for a new monitor for both kiddos. We have a 3 year old and one on the way in a few weeks! We currently have a Motorola that is pretty much done for, it shuts off constantly and has to be plugged in always. It really only has close up views so we can't see the whole room of our toddler.

We want one with 2 cameras, that can be close up for new baby, and the other camera to be a wide range or angle so we can see all of our toddler's room in case he gets up in the MOTN.
We want the parent screen to shift between both monitors itself all night long so we can hear both kids. Or do a split screen somehow and hear both at the same time?

Would like to buy from Amazon since I get the 15% registry discount. I've been looking at the $100 price range but if there is a more expensive one that has EVERYTHING I'd be willing to splurge a little. Thanks in advance!

We have only ever had a sound monitor and we still use it even though C is 3.5 years old. We have a split level house so we are not near him and I like white noise at night so I wouldn't hear him unless he was truly throwing a tantrum and I certainly don't want him to get to that point and then not be able to go back to sleep once I do hear him. He's always been a poor sleeper.

Yes. I can hear him fine at night but esp for naps I like to know that he's actually sleeping instead of playing on the sly.

Yes, I love watching her sleep after I put her down - I always miss her as soon as I sit down after bedtime

We use it only occasionally (usually at nap time) because of the way our current house is set up we can't hear him while sitting in the family room etc.

We have two cameras in the children's room, one for each child focused on their bed. I haven't really been using it a lot lately but that's because I've been spending more time in the office (which is right next to their room) when they're going down for bed. I keep them in there because I do enjoy having eyes and ears in there when I'm not in the office, like upstairs. Or if one is sleeping and the other one wants to go outside, then we take the monitor with us. Not sure when we'll stop using them but it'll probably be a few years yet! We're still not consistently getting P to go to bed and -stay- in bed!
