Mine is a bit of a different situation. My 1st son shares a name with one of my cousins and one of my other cousins kids. They are all named after my grandpa- so we do not care at all that they have the same name. They are all in honor of a really great man.

My 2nd son (Harry) is named after my husbands grandpa. 3 months before he was born, my husbands cousin named her kid Harrison and my husband was devastated thinking we couldn't use the name anymore. We did and it is just fine. Again, they are both named in honor of a really great man.

@Pollywog: I don't think anyone would mind either, but I'm still feeling a little iffy about it personally. More in reference to the cousin I actually see at holidays and such, I don't care about reusing the name of my other cousin whom I haven't seen in years.

@PinkElephant: @skipra: My cousin's definitely a good person so he wouldn't be a *bad* guy to be named after, but we've always avoided officially naming our kids after anyone. (I think DH is a bit scarred by being a junior!) We've nixed many other names I'd otherwise have liked for already being used by grandparents, etc. to avoid that misinterpretation. I think our best rationale for using the name would just be that it's what we could agree on!

@2littlepumpkins: Sorry, trying to keep it vague for privacy reasons, especially since it seems likely we may end up using it. Believe me when I say you're not missing out on anything that trendy or unusual! Although I sometimes wish we preferred more eclectic names just to widen our options.

@Elizabear: Haha, I would if my husband didn't keep vetoing the names I like best! This is one of his top choices, I just can't decide how I feel about it. If not for the family connection, I'd probably have agreed by now. At least we went with my top boy name for DS1.

I would do it especially for a common names, and boy names seem to get used more than girl names, where people tend to use more unique names. Totally curious what the name is now. :silly:

I’m trying really hard to put myself in your shoes, but I only have six cousins. Ha! DH has at least 3 times as many, but he isn’t close to all of them. I guess if the name was unusual are particularly memorable I’d probably not do it. But for a regular or classic name then I’d may consider it.

One of my cousins did this and named her son the same name as one of our other cousins. I was too young at the time so I don't know if anyone thought it was weird although I have personally wondered if he was named after our cousin and why. Like were they super close or did she just love the name? So i guess it's fine but I'd be prepared to explain why you chose it or expect others to question it.

@nanilani: would you mind if people in the family thought you named DS after this cousin? That would probably be my only hesitation. I personally don’t think that I would want to duplicate a name with an a family, even extended family, but it seems like your situation is far enough removed that it won’t be confusing. In your shoes, I would probably want to make sure that I had a good “reason” (even made up, or something vague like “it’s a solid biblical name”) For choosing the name on hand in case someone asked.

Our second choice name was my cousin’s kids name. My cousin said it was fine to steal.

If it was a super uncommon name then I wouldn’t but it sounds like it’s something really common like David.

Nate is really high on my boy list and I have a cousin named Nathan. We see each other maybe annually, I don’t think it’s weird at all. I think he’ll be flattered and think I named the baby after him and he’s childfree so I think he’d be excited.

Thanks, everyone. Clearly I'm overthinking it -- it's what I do best! Yes, it's a common name. It appears to have been in the top 100 (maybe even top 50) for the past 50 or so years. Maybe I'll let DH win this battle on DS2's first name despite my reservations, especially if he agrees to let me choose the middle name.

What's your take on using your cousin's name (their own name, not their child's name) for your own child?

I'm 37 weeks and we've been stuck at the same point trying to come up with a name for DS2 for months. Yesterday DH shared his top three names, and of those I'd say I have a clear favorite . . . but I'm hung up on the fact that I have two cousins with the same name. One I never see, but the other we see a few times a year. We're not super close but not estranged by any means either. Would it be weird to use his name for DS2? They would have different middle and last names. There is no reasonable alternative spelling/variation/nickname of the name.

We both come from large families (~30 first cousins between us) and neither of us care for unique names, so I don't think we'll suddenly discover any new options in the next few weeks. Maybe it's just too much to ask to agree on a name that hasn't been used by a family member already :bummed:

Unfortunately, his top three and my top three don't overlap at all. He's vetoed one of mine, says another reminds him of an annoying coworker, and hasn't said much on the third (but I don't think he's too hot on it). I'm thinking of vetoing one of his top three, and I just don't like the other option as much as my cousin's name once you take the family thing out of the equation.
