She wore socks to daycare until she started walking, just before her first birthday. After that, I sent her in Stride Rites so she could go out on the playground every day.

Soft soled mocs from pulling up to actually walking; then real shoes shortly after. But for daycare in the beginning when I knew she wasn't really walking outside or anything I kept her in soft soles for a while.

My kid didn't go to daycare so I did bare feet for a long time at home. She started walking at 11 months and didn't get shoes until her birthday as a gift and I didn't put them on her much because I didn't want to impede her walking. For kids that are out of the house at daycare I would definitely get something with a grippy leather type sole like robeez so they don't slip. Some days I still take off the socks from my 15 mo th old toddlers in the house. My daycare kid's parents sent him in some non-flexible shoes a few times and I just kept them off his feet the whole day.

My daughter was crawling and pulling to stand during the summer so we were outside a lot so I put her in robeez type soft soles at that age just to protect her skin. You could also try skidders, they have a few varieties but I really like these because it's just an extra grippy sock, some have a soft sole and I'd probably skip those for inside.

When they're walking outside. For my kiddo that was right at 1 year. She started standing and cruising at 7 months, but wasn't consistently walking until her birthday. She wanted to walk constantly after that, so shoes became necessary. But she is still barefoot or in socks inside at 17 months.

Ok.....so when do babies wear shoes for a practical purpose....not just to look cute? DD is starting to stand up and I realized we might need to buy shoes at some point....haha. She is 8 months and had her first fall while standing at daycare (nothing bad at all) so I started wondering if her socks are too slippery (they have the size & brand in grippy stuff...but does that do anything?)

TIA!

My LO kinda has big feet, so it throws everything off. For instance, she got a cute pair of pink Converse that should fit when she's maybe sitting up on her own or almost crawling, but they fit now at 4 months. They totally matched her outfit yesterday but her feet weren't ready to be confined yet (even though it had no sole) so she couldn't wear it and I tried ;D Yeh ... she probably won't ever get to wear them. By the time her feet relax, they'll be way too small.

@shopaholic: hahaha I know right... I'll measure what LOs newborn feet were when he wakes up but I'm sure they were at least 2-3". His shoes he wears now measure 4.5" and he has about .5" of wiggle room, and they are size 4-4.5 so I'm assuming that's how it goes but idk!!

@shopaholic: I only figured that out cause I measured LO's foot! then I looked it up. I was so confused. however I don't think babies feet start out at one inch so maybe my theory is faulty.

depends on the brand. Pedipeds fit pretty true to size, I think they're a four and LO is 8 months - although there is definitely growing room. So I guess he's probably a 3.

But he has a bunch of size 2 shoes and those fit.

Most of the 6-12 mos shoes are huge on him. He has small feet.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: it's inches. Size 4 is four inches.

The 0-6, 6-12 mo sizing fit fairly on track for my LOs but after that it gets a little dicey since you want the shoes to fit perfectly once they are walking. At 1yr DD was wearing a size 4 and DS is wearing a 5 at 14 mo. They don't have particularly wide or large feet, average I would say..

At 10 months, most size 1 shoes are too big( but too narrow) for my LO! There is an eight month old at daycare who is wearing size 4 shoes! :-)

I always see the baby shoe sizes listed by a number and then a month range. But in my eyes, the shoes often look SO BIG for what I think a baby/kid would wear at that age. Maybe because they're wide for chubby little feet? Maybe because they wear socks inside? IDK. Just wondering how often those recommended months sizing actually matched when they could wear it?
