I didn't buy anything until almost 17 weeks. It was hard not to but worth it. After we found out that we were having a boy I went and bought some things. I did major shopping after my showers. We put money away from each check until we went shopping that way the money was there with out buying anything.

I'm not buying anything yet, mainly because we told our families not to buy anything until after our first ultrasound. But I will buy things for me, like a baby book, clothing, skin are, etc.

@jennimac: @Betsyboop: Thanks! These are the types of things we've been getting so far. I'm wondering if we should pick up some of the "more expensive items" since our family would be less likely to buy us lots of those in a shower. However I do pick up little things if they're super on sale.

@jerricabenton: This is a very good idea! I happened to pick up some medela breastfeeding items because our hospital had them on sale. But there are many more that I still need just for me.

For any of you that didn't buy until 12 weeks for fear of mc, what did you buy once you got there?

I only bought stuff for myself, maternity skincare, comfy bras - stuff like that, until we knew the gender. Early purchases that might be good are cloth diapers, if you're going that route. You can stretch out the expense and they are less likely to be gifted to you. I would just take the time to research the kind of gear you want. That took a lot of time and you don't want to feel rushed at the end. Also most people go fairly gender neutral with that stuff.

@JoJoGirl: I was too nervous too. We've bought a couple of novelty onesies and that's about it. But we are also focusing on moving so its harder to know what we need. And I expect to get a lot of basics at our shower.

We bought a few things here and there as we saw them on sale. We bought our stroller, onesies and a few newborn clothing items, our white noise machine, crib and infant car seat. I don't regret buying any of those things but it did make things difficult for people who wanted to buy things for us as we had already acquired a bunch of stuff. So we ended up getting a lot of clothing, which I think is somewhat unavoidable anyway. I say go for it!

ETA: We didn't really buy stuff until after I was out of the first trimester but that was more because I was too busy with other stuff!

I bought things like bath tubs and swings. We have two houses so I bought them at a consignment sale. I also got a great pnp. Some will say they didn't buy anything because they didn't want to jinx anything, but I know I didn't lose my daughter because I bought things too early. So that's my thoughts on the matter. There was a point that I did put some things in another room, but honestly, for me that wasn't the hard part about losing our daughter. I know they will be used and our future kids will love them.

I didn't really buy much early, actually. I waited until after my shower to see what I still needed (a lot of stuff like the Boppy and bottles and even our crib and glider were gifted). The only thing I bought early on was cloth diapers because I wasn't sure they would be gifted (we got a lot of initial skepticism about them) and I caught a good sale on them.

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and there are things we will wait to buy until we know if it's a boy or girl (basically anything that should look girly or boyish). But I'd like to start collecting items that aren't affected by gender now, to spread out the expenses. Thinking of such examples as a boppy, bottles, etc.

So I want to know, what items did you buy early on in pregnancy? And did you ever regret buying items early?

My house looked a lot better after 9-10 months when I was able to get rid of the bumbo, exersaucer, swig, bouncy chair, etc. that's the stuff that takes up space! Now we are rocking with two baskets in each baby room - playroom, livin room, and nursery. One for books and one for toys.

No, not really. We make sure to put away things that have outgrown their usefulness. We have her jumperoo in the living room, a small "changing" station with diapers and wipes, etc in the living room, her high chair in the dining room... and that's about it. When I have cloth diapers drying, the rack sits in front of our french doors but I fold it down against the wall when it's empty. Her toys live in a big, wicker laundry hamper that sits under a desk. The hamper even has a lid so we put her toys in there, close the lid and slide that baby under the desk. It's out of sight and out of the way.

Ugh...yes. I try to keep things organized and in their place but by the end of the day, things are all over the living room. I use baskets to keep the toys contained though and that seems to help. I also put away some of the stuff when we're not using it because I don't want dog hair to get on it (we have a black lab). The swing is huge but I managed to put it behind the couch so it isn't quite as noticeable :)

Not yet, lo is only 15 months so its pretty east to control. But I do see it happening. My plan is to get a toy chest in the living room so we can just have her throw the toys in at the end of the day.

Our thing is we have a dog who has separation anxiety and hell eat whatever is left out when we leave the house, so everything has to be cleaned up if it's not behind closed doors. So we keep all baby toys in the rooms, not in the living room.

So far, we have the swing in the living room, and sometimes his bassinet during the day. And random clothes that migrate it. I'm sure it will get worse as he gets older.

Umm, yes. I like to be super organised but there's just no way with a baby. Currently (it's mid-afternoon here), I'm in our living room and I have a sheet spread out on the floor with a sleeping baby on it, a play gym next to the sheet, a bumbo on the other side, a basket of toys against the wall, a stack of books on the coffee table, a swing in the corner, a boppy on the couch, a diaper bag on a chair by the door, and a bowl with clean teething toys on the entertainment center. That's just in the living room....and yes, this is a typical day.

The good thing is that I clean it all up every evening and our house becomes "ours" again after LO goes to bed. Really though, I think it's just inevitable with a baby that baby stuff ends up getting everywhere. In the first few weeks following birth, I didn't want to walk upstairs every time I needed something, so I moved as much of it to the ground floor as possible for the day time. Somehow, it's just never made its way back up to her nursery!

I always make myself pick up his toys each night before I go to bed and put them in baskets I have set up in the living room so at least they're not randomly all over the place. I would say it's organized clutter right now and it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I got used to it after a few weeks.

But we do have friends with a LO and their house is always a MESS...like it's dangerous to walk around because there are just toys everywhere. I always make sure I will never let the clutter get that bad!

Yep, it's everywhere. It was necessary when I was a SAHM, but when kids are in daycare full time you definitely need less stuff around. You just have to entertain them on the weekends and we go out a lot then anyway.

I don't put any toys in the kids' rooms because I like for their rooms to only be for sleep. That'll change as they get older.

We're lucky because we have a finished basement that we've turned into a playroom, and we also have a weirdly shaped living room. It's front-to-back and long and skinny, so there's no elegant way to make it into a big living room. So instead we basically split the room in two. One side is the living room and one side is the play area. Unfortunately the living room also has kid stuff in it since we don't have a garage... so the carseats, extra stroller parts, etc. are sitting along the side of the room.
