We never gated her into a particular area. She loves to stick to my side so I really don't have to worry about her getting into trouble which is both good...and bad because it's hard for me to get anything done. But hey, good in that our house still looks like an adult house and we can buy nice stuff and leave it out -- she doesn't touch it!

We just babyproofed the first floor like crazy. RJ wasn't super mobile when he was crawling. We had a baby gate at the stairs, and when he was able to pull that down we installed a more sturdy gate with a closeable door... but we don't even close it now because he doesn't really go up the stairs. He knows upstairs = bedtime! Haha.

My LO isn't crawling yet, but if I'm doing stuff I'll have her in an area where I can see her and I know everything is safe. If I'm not doing housework, I'll open the gates and let her go so I can follow her around.

We recently bought some baby gates and gated off our entire living room so that LO could have as much room to practice crawling, cruising and eventually walking. (Our coffee table and rug are gone and we put down playmats within this area).

LO has already started to rattle the sides of the gates wanting to be let out. I'm assuming he will want out more as he starts to walk and become a toddler. (He is 10 months old now).

Question - do you have a gated play area and if so, when do you plan on letting baby out of gated play area. If you do not have one, how do you get anything done around the house while watching baby to make sure he/she does not get into anything he/she should not get into? We're in the process of baby proofing but there are some items I am not sure what to do with...like dog food bowl, shoe rack, room air filter...things that need to be left on the floor but are too dirty or fragile for baby.)

Do you watch your baby like a hawk or let him roam around the house?

I thought we would have to, because I was worried my daughter would wake up and wander around, but we've found that she just sits in bed and yells for us for whatever reason. She's only gotten out of bed by herself once, and she came straight to our room and climbed into bed with us.

@Mrs. Bee: Does Charlie get off his mat at daycare from naps by himself or does he wait for the teacher to say it okay? A floor bed wouldn't be so different from that. When you convert the crib to a toddler bed does it still look like a crib but one side has the shorter guard rails? If it didn't look very different from what he is use to I'm not sure if they would stay put if they haven't been prior.

@mrbee: I think the gate on the door is actually a great solution, I was more responding to locking the actual door, I just re-read my comment and I wasn't very clear about that. I think LO being able to come to their doorway and look out/call out is fine.

@Andrea: I just told her when she woke up to call for mommy or daddy and we will come and get you. I actually never told her not to come down but she's always been hesitant at new things and we moved her to the new bed when we moved from CT to Seattle. The bed is pretty high, pillow top mattress plus box spring. I think if the bed was lower she might of gotten up and off it. I don't think I will be this lucky this time around when I move my son to a big boy bed.

We didn't and won't do any locking from the outside. When we had issues of a mobile toddler in their own room we put up a huge baby gate to prevent them from going down the stairs. Before that one on the stairs we had one just in their own door way and left our door open at night so we could always hear them..

We have these on the door to the bedroom, bathrooms, closets, pantry and office:

http://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Prograde-Drill-Door/dp/B0035RQF54/ref=pd_sim_t_4

We have lever door knobs so the knob cover don't work. We don't always engage them but they are there just incase. My daughter has been in a big girl bed since 20 months and she never gets off her bed until we come and get her. She's 3.5 now. We have the locks mainly so I can keep my younger son from trying to play in the potty or from going into the bedrooms and emptying all the clothes from the dressers. It's his favorite thing to do all time.

We haven't thought much about this yet since LO is only 6 months. There's actually a lock on the outside of my LO's door from the previous owners, but it doesn't work.

I don't think we'd ever put a lock on anyway because hubby and I are both very paranoid people. We've talked about getting a video monitor for when she's older, because we'll hopefully have a baby #2 by then who will get our old monitor. And if she's one to get up a lot I like the baby gate idea. It would also keep the dog out of her room.

I wouldn't feel comfortable locking my LO in a room. I don't want the bedroom to feel like a prison, or a place once they're in they're stuck. I listen to Dr. Joy Browne on the radio sometimes, and she always says it's okay to lock kids out of certain rooms, but never to lock them in.

Our kitchen door still closes and then we have a baby gate that attaches to the outside of the jamb. That way you have the best of both worlds :)

I don't know if that would work with your door, though.

With the baby proof handle on the inside, it's just as easy to get in from the outside as any other door :)

@looch: if the babyproof knob were on the inside of the room, an emergency worker being able to get in wouldn't be an issue?
