DH and I met with the first candidate last night. She was WONDERFUL! 😀 We spent 30 minutes in a solid interview and then the children were able to ask questions and interact. She met all of our qualifications so I'm keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 that what she presented is, indeed, what I receive in child care. We have one more interview [tonight]. I shall see how that one goes. 🙂

THANK YOU ALL for your honesty and your help. I truly appreciate that you put my mind at ease.

@Kaohinani: I read your post earlier and was coming back to suggest what it sounds like you already have done. I always get a million responses on Care and UrbanSitter. I weed out candidates pretty quickly in a number of ways, and I generally go with sitters who are already vetted by nature of their job/student status (which I verify with references). We’ve used pt daycare workers, elementary school teachers, swim coaches, and education or nursing/med students. We have found some great long term sitters this way!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Wonderful! That does make me feel better. I did a full check on both and both are CPR and first aid certified. One is a medic in the reserves and the other is a SLP which is great bc DS is speech delayed. We are bringing both kids to meet the candidates as I want to see how they interact. DS is usually a good indicator of people and motives (* honest toddlers, babies, and puppies usually are) and DD is high energy so if a sitter can keep up with her, she is in the running.

Yes, I used Care.com twice to find a sitter and had great experiences each time. For me, I carefully reviewed the sitter’s profiles, interviewed them, watched them interact with LO, and I also conducted background checks. One sitter I used even had to drive my LO and stay in my home overnight. Both of the sitters I used were college students and had prior babysitting experience.

@Kaohinani: I think it's probably similar to a dating website--there are creeps with dick picks, but if you dig long enough and use your discretion, you can find your husband, you know?

Our babysitter is a college girl from care.com and we really like her and trust her. I got 3 local/current references from her and did my due diligence and called up and spoke with all of the moms and asked very specific questions about what level of caregiving they entrusted her with. We were still a little nervous at first because we, like you, basically never used a babysitter, but our kid loves her and she's great.

@jape14: I think it was because, a few years back, there was an "incident" between a student and a professor or a professor's spouse. IDK and don't wish to stir the pot by inquiring too much. I have worked at the U for under a year now so I follow directions and keep my lips zipped. 😂 I agree though, it would make my life much easier and put some extra cash in a deserving student's pocket!

@Kaohinani: what an odd policy! I'm in academia and live in a college-heavy area and I've never heard of such a blanket rule - I think the students would revolt!

@Kaohinani: Ugh that's a frustrating policy cause college kids are an amazing group of babysitters. I'd definitely check the mom's group on Facebook, I see a ton of postings there too. Or even ask the local high school if they have a job board!

We found our nanny of 4 years and counting on care.com, but it may be that it's not a good avenue in your area. If you have a local college those are great places to find babysitters! I also see a lot of babysitter recs/ISOs on my local moms group on facebook.

I did! Our favorite babysitter is from care and she's been watching my son for over 4 years. I interviewed about 4 people and only ended up liking her but it has worked out. I find that a lot of nurses and daycare workers are on care.com seeking extra cash so I made sure to get CPR certified, background checked people. Good luck! I know how stressful not having good childcare is - we live far from family as well.

I was wondering if anyone has had luck with Care.com caretakers/babysitters? I have many (read as "an ungodly amount of" 🤣) commitments and physican appointments each month. DH and I have an arrangement, as when I am working a friend watches DS (3.75 years) and when I have appointments, DH takes time off from work. Our closest family is over 3 hours away and I dislike imposing on people with my children. In so many words - we have NO ONE to watch DS or DD in case of emergencies. Anyway, I signed up for Care.com before speaking with a few friends of whom shared differing opinions. One felt her babysitter was spectacular and she ONLY uses that woman whenever she goes out. Another said, "You get what you pay for. If you are paying $10 an hour, expect the minimum." She detailed a lady who was really nice but didn't really interact with her 7 year old, rather they just watched TV for 4 hours. My last friend had a horrible experience. After the sitter left, she found that mini vodka "nippers" were stolen from her liquor cabinet, as well as, was a pair of earrings she had left by her sink in HER bathroom while getting ready! She called the police AND reported the woman to Care.

DH and I have an RE appointment together coming up and have to attend sans children SO it is necessity that I find a quality sitter AND SOON. I was just wondering, has ANYONE had luck with babysitters, caregivers, nannies, etc from Care?

We've mostly only used family members as babysitters (grandparents or aunts) and DS1 has never cared. The couple of times had friends watch him, he was fine too. DS2 is 6 months and I have a feeling he will be harder to leave. I stay home now and he's already a mama's boy.

DS (2.5y) stays home with Grandma & Papa, so he is only used to 4 caregivers.

He was fine with our temporary full-time babysitter age 3-4 months. After that, with sporadic monthly babysitting with the same person, he cried every time and was fussy up until age 2. After age 2 he has been better, but more disobedient / prone to conflict with other kids, sooooo babysitting is still hard and we don't ask for it that often.

We don't do paid babysitters, just babysitting trades.

90% of the time they are excited to see Miss Sarah or whoever is watching them. She's young, fun and probably lets them get away with more than I would! Every once in a while they have a meltdown about it but I think that's normal!

My son was never great with care other than me, even though we exposed him to a nanny beginning at 4 months old, so I do think part of it is personality.

I should note that my son was in daycare since 6 months old so it's not like he is not used to being in the care of other people. There's just something about his parents not being home on a weekend evening/afternoon and having fun without him that gets under his skin.

Almost 4yo loves it! I’ve made sure to leave him with a sitter from early on, at least once a week (daytime or night time). So he’s used to it!
I plan to do the same with my 6mo.
I love that we can go on dates or I can comfortably leave to do something for myself without any drama.

@josina: I know, it sucks! DH was really surprised the daycare teacher was so honest about how LO was doing. You’d think LO would be used to other people besides me since he goes to daycare, but I guess being at home equates to mommy. So far the new sitter says it’s going well.

In 4 years we've actually only not-put-our kids to bed once (at least once of us)! Hoping for #2 this weekend for our anniversary.

My 6 year old gets upset whenever we announce we have a babysitter coming over to the point where it almost makes it not worth going (1.5 year old is just fine). We’ve tried not announcing until right before but usually one of us slips and we’ll talk about what time the reservation is, etc. and he gets upset. The babysitters are usually former daycare teachers who have been babysitting him for years and yet we still get that reaction (though he’s happy if it’s his grandparents watching him). We’ve started letting him have movie night with the sitter, which involves ordering pizza and picking out a treat and that has helped a little. I hate that he makes us feel so guilty for going out but we likely have the issue because we go out too infrequently. Between the hassle of booking a sitter, the cost, and my son’s guilt trips, I always debate whether I should have stayed home!
