We start K this year too!! So exciting. I have an older child at the same school - and the school has a blog to keep everyone updated. There is a program our school does where you order all of the supplies online and they're shipped directly to the school for the first day. So you just go online to the site, enter the school code and the grade and DONE. I love it... They also print the list if you want to order yourself though.... I'm sure you'll hear as it gets closer. But you could also email the school secretary to find out.

@DesertDreams88: thank you so much for this info! I did some more digging on the school website and found a kindergarten wish list that only has a few items on it, and then each room has its own wish list as well. I don't know which room she'll be in yet, but at least I have an idea. I'm always willing to help the teachers out. I know you all need much better pay out here and in top of that, she's going to a title 1 school so I know a lot of parents can't help.

@JennyLayneAZ: as a fellow Arizonan, and teacher, it's probably good to note that AZ law actually requires all school districts to provide the necessary materials. so theoretically, schools can't give out "required" school supply lists, and usually, teachers will have the necessary basics.... but not always. For example, in my 11 years of teaching, there've been 4 years where the school just "didn't have enough notebooks" to supply my order, etc. It's also much harder getting supplies during the school year, so, if more students bring their own, the further my supply will "stretch."

Try googling your local school district to see if they have a generic list posted, here's an example from Dysart: https://www.dysart.org/Sites/Default.aspx?pgID=2273

My little dude starts K this year too! Since my DD is going into 4th we already know the school and the PTO actually sells school supply kits as a fundraiser and everything he needs will be at school on day 1. Before last year all supplies in K were communal but not sure what they did last year/will do this year. This is our list:

Ok, so I ordered just a couple of things - pencils, scissors, glue sticks & erasers - from Amazon. If she doesn't need anything for school then she'll have them for home projects. It made me feel a little better than having nothing at all lol

Either this coming weekend or the one after we'll go shopping and let her pick out her backpack, lunchbox, etc. Then if we do get any last minute lists, I can pick up whatever on my lunch break from work.

@JennyLayneAZ: Hi! Like you, with my DD I was so stressed because I didn't have a supply list before kinder started. Turned out, I've never needed to buy any supplies - my daughter is going into 4th and her school provides everything (even scissors) every year! And, yes, it's public school. So, it totally depends on the school. In terms of lefties, my daughter is a lefty and all of the scissors for that age can be used interchangeably so I don't think there's anything specific you need. Just backpack, lunchbox (if she eats lunch at school -- our kinder is 1/2 day), and water bottle. Have fun! My son is starting kinder this year, too.

Hello! Just piping in because my DS1 is starting K this year too! He's staying at the same private school where he was last year for pre-K, and our region doesn't start school until after labor day, but I'm very excited for this big milestone anyway!

Kind of agree with @wrkbrk:, they provide all the supplies but I would be into some back to school shopping this year!

My DD started kindergarten last year. Because of Covid they supplied everything - DD just needed a backpack (big enough for a regular size folder), water bottle, lunch/snack bag, and masks. We haven't heard what is happening this year with supplies.

When we were hybrid there was no rest time but when we switched to full time (for the last 6 weeks of school) they had 30 minutes of "down time." They could read, play with play dough, or rest.

Wow, thank you everyone for the responses! It's so quiet around here I wasn't expecting so many comments 😊

I guess it definitely is a possibility that there won't be a supply list, I hadn't really considered that. I'm just expecting it to be last minute 😆

I'm also wondering if my school had a rest time or not. ODD naps at daycare ( for like 2 hours!) but not at home 🙄

@JennyLayneAZ: Could you email the school to make sure they’re not providing the supplies? My son is also starting kindergarten in August and they explicitly disallow us from bringing supplies (not sure if that’s a COVID thing or just their policy). So he needs a backpack, water bottle, and lunch box, and that’s literally it. I think they might tack on a flat fee ($40?) to August’s tuition payment to offset all the supplies they provide. This is easier for sure but I love school supplies and would actually have enjoyed getting him all set up myself ☺️ But either way, you don’t want to start buying things she’s not permitted to bring in!

@kayla0416: hi! My school does a 'rest period' during the first half of the year. Kids bring a little blanket and/or pillow and they can rest their head while the teacher reads a book. I heard a few of the boys were really hard to wake up last year! I cut my daughter's naps about 1.5 years ago unfortunately because I was having the same problem you are having but with my younger daughter. I am so very worried about my younger daughter starting an all day preschool and the naps being put in because if she sleeps for even 5 minutes at any point in the day, I will not be able to put her to sleep at night. So crazy.

DS will start kindergarten in August as well. Actually, our city has summer school available to all students, and most incoming kindergarteners utilize it, it's great. DS has gone for four weeks now, with two weeks left, so he's now familiar with his school, possible classmates, expectations, etc. I was SUPER nervous about him starting summer school but he's adjusted so well.

This is what he needs for summer school:

Backpack
Lunch box
Water bottle
Snack
Towel/blanket for "rest time"

I imagine the school should have a supply list available now or soon. This is ours for the school year:

24 Ticonderoga #2 pencils
2 Large pink erasers
2 pkg. 8 Large
washable markers (classic colors)
2 boxes 24-ct Crayola crayons
2 pkgs. FINE point, black dry erase markers
6 pack glue sticks
1 bottle liquid glue
1 pair child sized scissors
1 pkg. Lined Index Cards 3x5
2 boxes facial tissue
Over the head headphones
1 pencil box

BOYS:
1 Box quart size Ziploc bags
1 container antibacterial wipes

GIRLS:
1 boxes Gallon size Ziploc bags
1 bottle hand sanitizer

@agold: Hey, not to thread-jack, but I noticed your list has a rest blanket on it - do they get rest/nap time?? I'm pretty sure ours doesn't, but maybe I should ask! My oldest daughter is starting Kindergarten in 6 weeks and she still naps. I'm kind of panicking about the transition. We've been having daycare cut her nap to 45 minutes to work towards no nap, but she comes home saying "moooooooom, why do you tell my teachers to wake me up from nap, I'm soooooooo tired!" We've tried earlier bedtime, but she just won't fall asleep earlier than 8pm. But maybe when she starts school and doesn't nap she'll be able to fall asleep earlier at night and be fine. I hope I'm unnecessarily panicking...

To answer the original question, we start August 26th and don't have a list yet, but we live in a small rural town so our school is later about everything and I'm not expecting it until at least August. They didn't have registration open until April, and just opened sign-up for the after school program last week.

At our public school we do not have to buy any supplies, they are all provided by the school district. The teachers do request other items though, like clorox wipes, Kleenex, baby wipes, packaged snacks (in case a child forgets theirs), bottled water.

However, for our private preschool/Jr. K we have to supply a few things like pencil box, scissors, crayons, pencils and dry erase markers/eraser.

@bees_knees: thanks. yeah, I'm thinking a few things I can buy before I get the actual list, and most things we would/could use at home if they don't need them, such as the crayons. I'll probably not pre buy any glue or glue sticks, but if we had paper or something that they're particular about, we'd use that at home. Just getting an idea of what they could possibly ask for is good. Like I hadn't thought about pre sharpening pencils, although it makes complete sense!

FWIW, I wouldn't buy tooooo much before you have the list (unless you know you'll use it at home, too). Our school is sometimes particular about brands (crayola, etc). They pool all supplies and teachers just grab from the stockpile when they need.

The other thing I would start looking out for are Clorox wipes! They are typically on our supply list, and even if they aren't I'm sure the teacher would appreciate them :)

ETA our kinder supply list was only like 5-6 items. The lists supplies above are much longer than we've ever gotten!

It is definitely going to depend on the school and teacher but here’s our kinder supply list for ideas. But since it’s hard to know what they will ask parents for vs provide, I would only buy ahead what you know you can use at home also. We can go through a lot of the big construction paper at home! And I love those big “my first Ticonderoga” pencils.

@JennyLayneAZ: Hi! My oldest girl is also starting kinder in August. Try not to stress!! I think you are off to a great start. Maybe keep an eye out for when Target starts to put the back to school stuff out. If this will help at all, I'll give you my school's kinder wish list:

1 Box of Crayola markers classic colors (10 pack)
 2 Boxes of Crayola crayons
 2 Boxes of pencils already sharpened (10-12 count)
 1 White Elmer’s glue bottle
 1 Backpack
 1 Box of Kleenex
 1 Box of gallon size Ziploc baggies
 1 Box of sandwich size Ziploc baggies
 10 Elmer’s glue sticks
 1 Package of Baby wipes
 1 Pair of scissors
 1 Pack of skinny highlighters
 2 Containers of Clorox disinfecting wipes
 1 Small antibacterial hand disinfectant pump
 1 three inch Binder with clear overlay on the cover and spine
 1 Plastic folder
 1 small school box
 1 small blanket for rest time with name on it
 1 Spiral notebook
 1 Pack of skinny Expo markers (8 count)

I am a lefty and never had anything special for me to use at school except maybe the rare pair of lefty scissors. I actually learned to use my right hand for pretty much all things except writing and eating.

Keep an eye out for emails from the school. They will for sure let you know what they want the kids to bring.

Good luck! You've got this!

Hello everyone! My ODD is starting Kindergarten the first week of August. I have scoured the school website looking for any indication of when I'll get a supply list, but, haven't found anything. I am feeling overwhelmed but I'd like to start shopping if possible. I just don't know where to start.

Any advice? Any websites I should look into?

I really don't want to wait until the week before to go shopping, and, really I'd like to be able to buy some supplies online without worry of shipping delays.

Things I know I need:
backpack
lunch box
water bottle
pencils
scissors (? I'd assume? DD is a lefty)
some sort of notebooks

...speaking of her being a lefty, are there any other products out there specifically for left handers?

Crayons? Markers?

I don't know, I'm sure I'm stressing myself out unnecessarily, but between her going to big kid school and the baby starting daycare next week, I'm feeling the need to prepare for something/anything possible.
