@rattles: I agree... that is a definite con of big showers. I use the shower in the other bathroom when I have a cold and want it to get all steamy! We also had to switch to a larger shower head to stay warm. It is nice though when I'm showering with DH or LO or giving the dog a bath!

I vote yes to the bathtub. I like having the option for myself, I think it's better for resale, and I personally don't like giant showers. I feel like they're always freezing!

@Mrs.Yoyo - Yes, great point. Our house will be 1 1/2 story, with the "kids" bath being upstairs with the kids rooms and also somewhat closed off - thanks for this.

@theknest: I LOVE having one even though I rarely use it. Reason being that it's so much easier to bathe my almost 3-year-old in there because I can sort laundry, clean my own bathroom, clean out my closet, and even take a shower myself while he's bathing and still keep an eye on him. There is a tub off his room, too, but the way our house is laid out, I have to babysit him while he's back there because it's so closed off.

I should have done a poll. Seems like a bath tub is winning, but not by much. We will still have a pretty decent sized shower. Will have to cut down a bit on closet space & counter-top space to fit in the tub but I think we will try and make it work.

@Smurfette: I'm not a fan of the bathtub either (nor have I ever used ours. I bathe DS in it though! ha!), but for some reason, people always love the "idea and the aesthetics" of one in a master even if they don't use it. Maybe it's an old school thing

So our house is weird and we have a huge tub in our second bathroom. We just have a shower in the master. Everything else about our condo was perfect for us, but I was really upset that the nice bath wasn't in the Master.

I like baths, even if I don't get to take them often.

If you can fit a very nice/roomy stand in shower AND a tub, then I'd do it! If it's gonna need some compromising, then I'd rather just have a super nice shower since I can live without a bath (I never take baths).

I'd love one. I'm not a huge bath taker, but I would have LOVED a giant jetted tub when I was laboring at home. I also like to do my own pedicures and soak my feet after long runs, and having a tub that wasn't overtaken with bath toys would be really nice.

There's also the small matter that my drain doesn't plug right, so the tub doesn't hold water like it should...it's an easy fix that I haven't gotten around to yet.

Three-pronged answer:

If you plan to sell your property in the next 15 years, then YES, regardless of anything else.

If you don't plan to sell any time soon, and have space to do a stand alone tub, then YES (great for resale down the line and you never know when you might like having it).

If you don't plan to sell any time soon and you could only do a tub/shower combo, the NO. I loathe tub/shower combos in master baths - feels cramped, harder to clean - so I would think (as an owner and a potential buyer) that a big stall shower would be better than having a tub.

I used to always think a big, (jetted!) master bath was a must in my dream home, but honestly, I’d rather have a nicer shower – and when we were house hunting we were both more impressed with a larger, awesome shower than a big master tub but only a standard type shower.

A big, walk-in tiled/stonework shower with super nice faucets and double shower heads definitely trumps a master tub IMO.

We bought our house 2 years ago and it has a very nice shower but no master tub. I worried about it from a resale standpoint, but it ended up being the best house for us, so we bought it anyway. I haven't really missed having a master tub... I doubt we would really use it. There is another bathroom upstairs that has a tub and I have used it when I wanted to soak. I am hoping it won't be a huge issue when we go to sell.

Here are some pics of our bathroom: I think we could fit in a tub if we took out the storage unit, but it is super nice to have that space. I feel like it would be cramped... so given the choice, I prefer the nicer shower.

I think before we sell, I will get a graphic made to show how a tub could fit in case a potential buyer really wanted it.
