1,000 a year is 2.7 a day. I think we are probably close. We live in Canada so don’t spend hours out side in the winter, but we spend tons of time outside in the summer and at the beach.

My kids don't get a lot of outside play, despite the fact that I SAH with them. Our yard is buggy and I can't stand the hot humid summers, plus we have no place they can safely play outside without me. In the spring and fall I get them out as much as I can. It's good to have the reminder to get them outside.
I'm not really worried about their gross motor skills or free play though. We have a swing inside and lots of gross motor skills stuff and they rarely have screen time. They spend hours entertaining themselves with made up games, building with Legos, and reading books.

My kids probably do in the summer because they are at daycare with a huge outdoor playground from 8:30-5:30. In the winter, I find it a lot harder because its so cold and dark by the time we get home. I need to be better about bundling up and getting them out there but I really hate cold weather!

My kids probably get about 4 hours outside per day. Most of that is due to being in preschool and school + extended care 7-5:00 and living in CA. I'm not sure how much of it is unstructured vestibular sense building activity like mentioned in the article - probably very little. When they get home they play outside for about an hour. That is very active. We spend weekend mornings in nature because I'm so sick of being inside M-F.
Then most weekend afternoons they're back playing in the neighborhood. We also have a swing in the front yard and my kids will spend an hour sitting and swinging waiting for a neighbor friend to come home or finish eating. It's harder in the winter with less light but there's a street light in front of our house and we put lights on the bikes and scooters and keep playing.

Hmm I don't really keep track... Normally I would say I'm happy with the amount of time they spend outside. At daycare they def spend a lot of time outside weather permitting. And we usually go out after dinner, and try to spend most of our time outdoors on the weekends too.

The only caveat this summer so far is that I'm pregnant so some evenings/weekends, I just can't with the heat so we've gone to the mall or grocery stores as field trips more haha.

DS is outside for 3 hours a day at preschool and then when the weather is nice, we spend time outside in the evening too. We also go to the beach or hike nearly every weekend. I’ve been following along with this movement as well and have enjoyed spending more time outside myself!

DS1 might get this and DS2 has not.

We have long cold winters and typically don’t get much outside time. This summer with me home as long as the weather is decent DS1 is outside 3++ hours a day. We’ve been getting lots of rain though so it has been tricky. DS2 is lucky to be outside 30 min a day.

Once they are in school & daycare this September their outside time will be reduced. DS1 will get outside time at both places and in the evening at home but he will be lucky to get a total of 2 hours.

I love this-I wish I could be outside that much. We live in Northern CA where we can be outside basically every day. I think LO gets about 3 hours every day so we beat this recommendation right now!

@Kemma: it depends on the weather. On rainy/super hot/super cold days we don’t spend as much time outside. But generally they probably average 2 hours a day. Even if we don’t go outside due to weather, we rarely just stay home—our house is too small! So we’ll go to an indoor play place or museum where they walk/climb in the kids area a lot. I think between their free time and their structured activities (this summer, my kids have been doing soccer, dance, and gymnastics) they get a very good amount of physical activity.

I was just having a read of one of the links posted on the weekly roundup (https://www.stack.com/a/the-shocking-phenomenon-that-shows-just-how-movement-starved-modern-kids-really-are?fbclid=IwAR1mQp9by8yLHvGaGFni0zWX916YeDSujsrgWLSfJhJUsiGnoB2Ww67sfrI) and it got me thinking about the 1000 Hours Outside philosophy/ challenge that I’ve been following on IG (https://1000hoursoutside.com/index.html/). Basically, there is a theory that little kids need 1000 hours of outside time and play for optimal physical and neurological development.

My kids are pretty lucky because both our school and kindergarten provide lots of opportunities for outside play and physical activity, we also have a decent yard and they’re able to ride bikes and kick balls etc so I think they get plenty of chances to move their bodies but I know lots of kids aren’t so fortunate.

So, how much outside time do your little people get and do you think it would be anywhere near 1,000 hours per year?

Oh, E has been a peach today. It started when there was nowhere to park the car at the park, so we had to go to another park....then she wanted an ice cream (we said no), then she was mad because I was holding onto her bike handlebars (because she cant steer yet), then I brushed her cycle helmet with my hand and didn't say sorry, then I wouldn't let her sit in the drivers seat of the car (she bit me for that one). It went downhill from there.

I have had several tantrums because I got no sleep last night and am still sick with a cold after having it for a month. Oh, wait, you meant why did my KIDS have tantrums??

DD1 (almost 3) woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare and had small tantrums on and off until morning. The baby (6 months) melted down when I tried to take her off the breast asleep and put her down for a nap. Because I'm so mean.

Today on the way to church, both kids screamed all the way there - DD2 is 6 weeks (so understandable) and DD1 is 3.5. DD1 melted down over DD2 crying too loud (umm...back atcha), she wanted to look at the album cover on my iPhone while the music played, she was hungry and wanted a snack, her head hurt (because she was so worked up), and finally I gave her 2 tissues instead of one when she screamed that her nose was running. Sigh. Fun start to the day!

Why has your toddler/preschooler melted down today?
