Good luck on your three-hour test (I think I saw you will do it today).

I have no advice on the test front (I had a nine pounder, but passed the one hour test and no one ever mentioned it again). Re: the MFM, though, I would definitely find someone else if you have to use one in the future. I saw an MFM in my first pregnancy. He was wonderful and you should be able to trust your MFM because their whole job is to guide mom and baby safely through situations that are higher risk. Your MFM sounds horrible, and you clearly wouldn't be able to have a healthy, trusting dr-patient relationship at this point. Hope all goes well and you don't need any further F/U, but if you do, ruunnnnn to some other dr!

I had an 8 lbs 10 oz baby at 39 weeks and they never pressured me about having GD (past the 1 hour just fine), however just do the test and be reassured you are good to go...and avoid the jerk moving forward! ha :)

My first was 9p 3, no GD, second pregnancy they decided I must have had undetected GD first time. Had 3 hour test twice passed (also had HG and lost 20 pounds early on!)
I offered to monitor my sugars using a finger prick one day a week from 30 weeks.. was 6 tests a day and I entered them into an app which I showed the OB at appts.. they agreed I just have big babies (2nd was exact same weight as her sister)

What a dick!!!!!! Sorry you're going through this. I would never have thought an 8lb baby would be considered big and lead them to think future pregnancies will definitely result in GD.

Good luck with the 3 hr test. I never did either but instead opted to monitor my blood sugar for two weeks. But I delivered in a hospital with a midwife.

Wow the MFM is being a jerk huh? I guess I would do the 3 hour and complain about him/refuse to see him going forward.

Off topic but adding to others comments.... Are 8 pound babies big? Sheesh. My brother and I were both well over 8 and no one thought that was big back in the day. I consider an 8 pound baby completely "normal". (I had a preemie the first time but I hope I have an 8 pound baby this time!!)

This makes no sense to me. My first baby measured big too (and was 8 lbs 14 oz at 39 weeks), but no one ever insinuated that I MUST have GD because he was measuring big, especially since I passed the test just fine.

I'd be pissed too! But like everyone else said, I'd take the damn test just to hopefully get the MFM off your back. What an ass.

What a pain, I'm sorry! I would do it but it's ridiculous. I am expecting to get crap about this sort of thing this time around. My kids were 8lb9oz and 9lb13oz. But both were skinny babies just long (and still 95+ %ile height 2 and 5 years later). Luckily I've always tested negative for GD so far but I'm afraid they're going to push a c section I don't want unless truly necessary.

This would upset me so much. I would decline the 3 hr, although it seems like that would make life more difficult for you. Either way, I wouldn't pay for something unnecessary...would insurance even cover it?

Also, my first was 8 lbs 4 oz and my second was 11 lbs. Yes, 11 lbs. I only did the 1 hr test.

ETA- I would also file a complaint against the Dr and leave reviews everywhere I could.

And I agree....8 pounds isn't "big"! DS1 measured in the 100 percentile the entire time, and was born over 9 pounds. I saw MFM and they never mentioned anything about GD....just that he's a big boy. And at 4, he's still a big boy.

Thanks guys for reading and responding! I will do the 3-hr tomorrow. I don't have a choice if I want to continue with the plan to birth at the birth center. If I do need to continue to follow up with MFM, the midwife suggested switching me to a MFM in a neighboring city. The part that really just doesn't click with me is I already passed the 1-hr, so this just seems unnecessary and odd.

I agree that I would just do the 3 hour test (even though that's super annoying since you passed the 1 hour!). I think it's ridiculous that they're acting that way though! I have big(ish) babies- my first was 8lb 13oz a week early and I DID have GD. However, I didn't have GD with my second and he was over 8 lbs at 39 weeks. Baby #3 is also measuring 1-2 weeks ahead and I passed my GD test last month. Some babies are just on the bigger end of the curve!

If you go ahead and take the 3hr and it comes back fine, are you able to wipe your hands of the MFM and just continue business as usual with your birth center? If so, that would probably be best just to get past this. What a pain though. :bummed:

I'm all for knowledge is power and I never declined additional testing during pregnancy. But that being said, this doctor seems vengeful that you didn't do exactly what he told you so he decided to call your birth center and make life difficult for you. I would do the 3 hour test so you can hopefully pass and continue on with the birth experience you're hoping for. But I may consider filing some sort of complaint against that doctor.

If it makes you feel better, I had to the 1 hr and the 3 hr TWICE during my last pregnancy. I did it early on and got 135 which is on the line of passing so they made me do the 3 hour. And then I had to do the whole shebang again during the normal time frame. No one should have to drink that sludge 4 times. To be fair, I'm not exactly at my goal weight but I had no other factors that would indicate GD and my kids never measured large. I was pissed.

Gaaah! I'm so frustrated with the Maternal Fetal Medicine I go to. For a bit of background, my first baby was 8#3 and measured big up until 36 weeks. I'm 32 weeks with second baby, and he's measuring big also. The difference is I declined the 1st Tri abnormalities test with first baby, so I never put myself on MFM's radar. I got the test with baby #2 and that resulted in me using MFM for my anatomy scan also where they told me they'd be surprised if I didn't have GD because of how big the baby is.

I watched the u/s tech measure the baby, and his femur, head, and length are all measuring big, but then they tell me he's only big in the abdomen because I eat too much. I've had all day morning sickness this entire pregnancy, and I know I don't eat too much. I also exercised 3-4x a week up until 30 weeks when I got uncomfortable.

My midwife sent me for the 1-hour glucose screening at 30 weeks. I had lunch right before, since its a non-fasting test, and I passed with a level of 114. We decided this was great, but when I had to go back to MFM (at the request of MFM to recheck the size) the baby still measured tall and large, and they are still convinced I have GD even though I passed the 1-hour. I declined a 3-hour and explained that I can see the baby is measuring large all over, not just the abdomen. The dr. made a tactless remark about how its not up to him what risks people want to take with their own children and compared it to not putting my kids in carseats. I left happy to be done with them, but he called my birth center and told them I was high risk, most definitely have GD, and he recommends a scheduled c/s because the baby is too big.

Now my birth center's hands are tied liability-wise and they need me to do the 3-hr just to rule it out completely. Am I in the twilight zone? Why are they looking at a baby that measures 2 weeks ahead every where and telling me it's carrying all the extra weight in the abdomen? Why do I have a decent blood sugar at 30 weeks, but still "most definitely" have gestational diabetes?

I'm sorry this is more of a rant. I needed to get it off my chest. Has anyone else been in the same boat or had MFM not let up on them? Has anyone passed the 1-hr but failed the 3-hr?

My best friends are twins and they were each over 8 pounds at birth (seriously - I have no idea how their mom had 16 pounds of baby in her!). The one who was bigger at birth is seriously tiny and petite, while the other is super tall (they're fraternal, clearly!). And I have to agree with Mrs. Bee - major props to you for pushing out a 10lb baby unmedicated!

I think having a big baby isnt any indication. I think a baby grows depending on the "space" and just like me we have big babies. I was a tiny baby and now clearly I'm not tiny. Lol

As long as she's healthy (which is usually the case with big babies) you'll be fine. Plus if ever you give birth early you still have a 8.5 lb baby which is better than 5 lbs ;)

My husband's grandmother is a teeny tiny (although NOT in spirit) person who weighed ten and a half pounds at birth. She is really proud of it and loves to remind us. And just think, at least you don't have all of the concerns that come with "low birth weight" babies. Once you get the big baby out, it's smooth(er) sailing :)

My 10+lb son was born vaginally, pain-med free in 5 hours with 20 minutes of pushing. My original thought when they said 9lbs for this one was that she would just pop right out and my body would be like...'pbbbtt...huh...that was it?' But now that we're talking 10+ again, I am getting nervous...even though I've already done it! Funny what our minds do...

Ha. I'm sure your daughter will not mind being the big baby in the nursery. If it helps, I was a big baby and have never been a big girl. Are you having your big babies vaginally or c-section? Thinking about a 9lb baby coming out of there makes me cringe.

My son was a big baby at 10lbs 5oz. For some reason, I have always been a bit perversely proud of this.

Now I'm pregnant with a daughter and I am 36 weeks and she is measuring at 9lbs already!

They measured me a few weeks ago and thought she'd end up around 8.5-9 lbs and now that she's measuring much larger, I feel really conflicted about it.

I remember being in the hospital with our son and seeing all of the normal sized babies and being sad that we didn't get one of those. I'm trying to be practical about knowing that we'll have the BIG GIRL in the nursery...but since she's a girl, I feel so much worse about it.

Did you have a big baby? Anyone care to comment on how unfair it is already that I am proud of my son for being big and sad for my daughter?
