B was a biter. What worked for us:

1. Reinforcing good biting (ex: biting food)
2. We read a book called "Teeth are not for biting"
3. We reinforced teeth are for smiling
4. We taught him how to sign "help" if he got in a situation that made him angry and provoked biting

It really is a stage and the most important thing is to be consistent with your message! It will pass like all stages!

Our LOs are almost the exact same age. My daughter has been doing this recently, too! I just say, "No biting, please!" and put her down for a few seconds. I'll also offer a teether. I feel silly disciplining an infant, but I don't want it to become a habit. She only has three teeth, and it already hurts!

B does it, too! He's drawn blood before. I think it is mostly due to teething but our pediatrician said that we need to start "disciplining" for it now.

She said that we should try not to yell "ouch!" or squeal even though it hurts. Even though it scares them (B cries!) it is still a reaction and can reinforce the behavior. If he bites, we are supposed to firmly say, "No, we do not bite. That hurts mommy/daddy" and place him on the floor and ignore him for 30 seconds/minute.

He hasn't bit since the appointment so I don't know if it works or not!

So, I'm not sure...?

L has been biting my shoulders (or my husbands, or grandparents) when he gets picked up. It seems like he does it because he's excited?

I can't tell if this is a teething thing, or a behaviour thing, but I REALLY do not want to encourage this, but I am stumped as to how to stop it!

We don't play bite him at all, so I'm not really sure where he got this from?

Any suggestions, Please?

@littlek: I understand that it is developmental but in this case the amount of times the child has been bitten while being shadowed was of concern to me. I guess my issue was with the daycare more than the child, as they were supposed to be shadowing it shouldn't have happened again.

@LulaBee: As a parent of a child who has biten (he is 13 months old now). It is a stage and trust me as bad as you feel about your child getting bitten the parents of the other child feel awful as well. The hard thing is usually the child that is biting does not display the behavior at home so there is not much a parent can do. What has worked with my son is shadowing and redirection. You can't really "discipline" a child at this age because they aren't biting to be viscious. I'm sorry your daughter got bitten and I hope things get better. I'm sure it will, at this age, everything is a stage.

@LulaBee: Good luck, that really is a sick feeling when that happens.

One thing that helped me, was actually making sure the director was involved so that they could help address the staffing issues. I actually asked them to respond to those questions in writing so that I had copies of their responses.

In the end, I will say that as quickly as the situation came, it also left and we have been bite free for some time now. And in even better news, it didn't turn my child into a biter which was another one of my fears!

She got one bite on Monday, one on Tuesday, and 4 yesterday! The teachers are now taking drastic actions and have met with the offending kid's family. My daughter doesn't seem too bothered by the actual bites, but I know that she cries when they happen. I'm just sick over it all, and my heart is broken. I'm hoping things get better, and I'm going there at lunch today to nurse her and assess the situation.

I did print out those questions to use when talking to the teacher, however she answered most of them on her own. She seems to think it's because DD is new in class, and the other kids are jealous that she is getting attention from the teachers (she cries a lot because she's overwhelmed and not used to daycare yet). They are bringing additional staff in to do diaper changes, etc. so that the main teachers can watch children more closely, and assigning one teacher to my daughter all day to watch her.

We shall see what happens....

@LulaBee: I'm sorry I didn't get back to this. How have things been?

Honestly, bites happen at this age and its tough to deal with but they do just happen. Even if a teacher is sitting there with a child in their lap and another next to them, there can be a bite. Its kinda like when they start getting mobile. You can be sitting right there and just not be quick enough to catch them from bumping their head.

You can see the questions above I started using to get more clarity about the situation. Until it becomes an ongoing issue, I wouldn't worry too much.

My daughter started daycare last week in the toddler 1 room- all kids are 12+ months, DD is 11 months.
She got bit yesterday on the arm and it left a mark. I was upset, but have heard that it's "normal" at that age. Well her teacher texted me this morning and said she has been bitten again. I'm just so upset about it! I plan on talking with them when I pick her up today, and asking what they are doing to correct it (the teacher has assured me they are handling it, but how?). It's only her 5th day today and I just feel so bad for her because going to daycare has been such a hard transition already. Changing rooms/daycare isn't an option at all, nor is changing her hours. I'm not really sure what to do, I'm just feeling.... frustrated, angry, and sad for my baby.
