@cyoung: I had the exact same experience in my first pregnancy. I ended up having my daughter a week later at 38 weeks. Then in my second pregnancy I had pregnancy induced hypertension and had to be induced at 38 weeks. Blood pressure concerns and pre-e are pretty serious in pregnancy so just remember that you are advocating for your health AND your baby’s health when you go in to get checked when things seem “off”. Hope things continue to go smoothly for you!!

@cyoung: Don't feel like an idiot! Like seriously, don't sweat it at all. I remember feeling horrible and like the boy who cried wolf when I went to labor and delivery for bleeding. The resident made me feel pretty awful about how I was a long, long way from labor and that spotting was normal-- I had a history of loss and I was gushing blood. It was worth the peace of mind for my anxiety to know the baby was fine, but I left the hospital crying about feeling like I wasted everyone's time.

Even though that visit was ruled as "nothing", I had the baby 3 hours after being discharged. Having gone to the hospital for "nothing" ended up documenting some vital pieces of information like that I really did go from no signs of labor to baby in 2 1/2 hours and that my only sign of early labor is bleeding. Had I not gone to the hospital for that "nothing" visit, I would have likely had my second baby in the car.

So even though you right now it may seem like there was nothing, this visit could be really helpful later. You documented that you did have high blood pressure, then you didn't. That is helpful to know in case you get another high reading!

@cyoung: As someone who had severe pre-eclampsia, you do NOT need to feel like an idiot. These things are fairly common and can be serious, so monitoring is definitely warranted. You don't want to miss pre-eclampsia ever, so don't think twice about being vigilant about it.

I struggled with this for weeks at the end of my first pregnancy. I had to do 3 24 hour urine catches. I ultimately made it to my 39 week induction (gestational diabetes). Though with my 2nd they said guidelines changed and if that had happened then they would have induced sooner.

One thing they had me do when my BP was high that was helpful was complete bed rest for 24 hours. Only sitting up to eat and use the bathroom. I also was advised to get a home BP monitor and check regularly.

Everything looks fine. My blood pressure wasn't as high as yesterday. My 24 hour looked great. A doctor came in and said just to drink more water and snacks and stay out of the heat. He thinks I'll be okay and to keep my appointment for the 31st. thank goodness!

@cyoung: yeah I never got an answer as to why and I didn’t have it with my first pregnancy either. I was under some stress but I don’t know if that is the cause. If it makes you feel any better I doubt it’s anything you did or didn’t do or your diet. The explanation I was given was this just happens in pregnancy sometimes. So even though it’s really frustrating not to have a reason
Why, try not to blame yourself.

My blood pressure spiked at the end of pregnancy after it had been pretty consistent the entire time. I asked the NP about it, and they had me do the 24 hr collection just in case. My results came back just high enough to be in the range for pre-eclampsia. The night before I got my results, I had one of the worst headaches ever - worse than a bad migraine. That was also a symptom of pre-eclampsia. Because I was already in the 39th week, it meant an immediate induction for me. It's good that they are monitoring you closely, and I hope you'll get good test results!

@magnolia: yeah especially since there is no pattern or trigger really. Like its weird too cause sometimes my top number is fine and the bottom in 90 somthing and sometimes the top is high in the 140s and the bottom is fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

However all everything will work out. I guess I'm just confused. I didnt deal with this my last two pregnancies.

@cyoung: I noticed the same thing in the hospital when I was initially being monitored. I was hooked up to the machine and it would take a reading every 20 minutes or so. It would go from 140 to 160 and back to 120. The nurse told me it can be “labile” and fluctuate

Having similar issues and similar stage of pregnancy as you! Sorry to hear about the protein in the urine.

After I was monitored last week for high BP (never got higher than the 140s though), they sent me home to do the 24 hr catch. I go back tomorrow for another check up (and all was normal at the specialist I saw last Wednesday), but since I haven't heard anything about the urine I assume I'm in the clear so far. They did threaten me with bed rest if things start creeping up again, but I'm about to be off work permanently either way (hello summer for teachers) so that won't be a huge deal if it happens.

I had pre-e last pregnancy, but everything officially onset way at the very end (high BP, massive swelling/weight gain, protein starting to spill into urine), so, while I did have to be induced, I was already 5 days late anyway so it wasn't that huge of a deal. They did put me on a magnesium sulfate drip to bring the BP down (I think that's the name) during labor and it left me super groggy for days after delivery. But BP came right down once baby was out.

I have white coat syndrome accompanied with borderline high bp.. meaning that normally my bp is 140's/80's but when I go to dr its higher like 160's/100's or 90's

During my 2 pregnancies I was AMA so I went to a specialist. Thank goodness they understood my issue and they'd basically tell me to check my bp an hour after the apt and if it was "normal" I was ok but if it was "high" then I'd have to call them in and do the urine collection. I did calibrate my machine with the dr office machine so I knew my readings were right.

I had to do 2 urine collections during my second pregnancy just to be sure.. it's a pain but better safe than sorry.

Luckily for me I never had protein in my urine so I didn't get pre-e

I was induced at 39 wks though to be safe.

I had to do the 24 hour test back In January

I had really bad vertigo/dizziness as well

Mine came back ok and I was diagnosed with chronic hypertension at 23 weeks. I was put on medication to manage the BP

Re: your machine. I would take it to your doctors office. Take your BP after they take it and compare the two to check the accuracy

Sounds like pre-eclampsia. I had it with both my pregnancies - both induced around 37 weeks because of it. WIth my 1st pregnancy, my BP starting creeping up after 34 weeks but my protein didn't get high enough for a pre-e diagnosis until I was induced. With the second, I had elevated protein starting at 28 weeks and was on bed rest for the final 9 weeks before induction but my BP didn't rise until after delivery.

@cyoung: my bp was elevated during pregnancy. At 36 weeks I had to do a 24 hour urine catch and my protein came in just under the threshold for pre-e. My doctor pulled me out of work and told me to take it easy. I had to go in for a NST every couple of days and was under strict orders to go to l&d if I got any kind of headache. Thankfully pre-e never developed but I was monitored pretty closely. I also had to take my bp at home.

I was dealing with blood pressure that was kinda high for me. It was in the 136/96 range and a smidge higher here and there. My norm is 120/70. I had dizziness today and I threw up randomly. I called the doctor and they told me to go in and be checked. My BP when I got there was 181/96. Fortunately it did go down to about 149/80. They did a few tests and said I did have "a small trace of protein in my urine"
They sent me home with stuff to do a 24 hour urine collection and I have to go back tomorrow and be monitored again.
Other then pregnancy hypertension what could cause protien in my urine? Do you guys know? Anyone else deal with this?

So I called the doctor and they told me to go in and be checked.

@cyoung: if you are pregnant (or recently postpartum), please go to OB triage ASAP for a preeclampsia work up. High BP, swelling and headache is a very concerning combination.

I’m a dummie - you’re on my due date board! Please please go in!!

You might be able to take your machine in to your doctor or pharmacist to get it calibrated. That way you know if the reading is accurate or not.

I honestly would go in just for peace of mind. All those symptoms together could be a sign of pre-e.
