@anbanan15: if you like the colors it’s worth a try. I wonder if Lux is easier to warm up than Comotomo. Personally, I saved all my Comotomo bottles and if there is a second I am just going to get replacement nipples.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I know, but apparently they are not a knock off? The nipple on Lux is apparently different and a softer silicone?

Has anyone used Lux bottles? Is there a difference between them and comotomo? Visually they look the same.

We always loved comotomo bottles, but the lux line offers more colors, so I was thinking of ordering if they are the same.

My DD was like this too. By 9 months she had no interest in bottles. She was eating a ton of solids and just wouldn’t take more than an ounce at a time from the bottle.

You could try to introduce sippy cups and see if that works better. Don’t stress about it. We phased out bottles on the early side and it was fine.

My son has never taken a bottle since his first month of life  so now that he's eating a lot of solids (and nursing a bit less, even when I am with him all day) I will offer him a cup of milk when I'm gone and rely on solids to get through. I had the same concern about relying on food too early but his pediatrician encouraged me to roll with it.

The bright side if it doesn't fix itself is bottle weaning should be easy?

@NorthStar: Just something to add on the possibility that he won't take a bottle because of an ear infection... DD has had about four and her only symptom is after her drum perforates and it starts draining. So if your LO's only symptom is not taking a bottle, I wouldn't be surprised!

My DD is 9 months. My pumping supply has plummeted recently. I nurse in the morning and shortly after daycare pickup as well as once or usually twice in the evening. DD does not wake up overnight.

She was getting two 4 oz bottles at daycare, but I had to drop her to two 3 oz bottles. She loves water and solids and always drains her milk. However, she is getting at least as much nutrition from her solids. I entirely believe that solids is as much or more important for her than just fun. (DS was the same way.)

I'm just hoping to get her to 11 months before I move to milk. I have a small freezer stash, but am already starting to get into it.

DS was that way whenever he had ear infections.. the ONLY symptom was that he wouldn't take bottles (usually following a cold). (and I actually just found out DD has a double ear infection and had no clue, we were only there for DS's pink eye!)

We also had to switch bottles with him around that age, no idea why, but when he quit taking Dr Brown's bottles daycare tried a playtex they had and we ended up switching!

@gingerbebe: Thanks for your insight! He had been using a faster nipple, but that hasn't seem to make much of a difference. Daycare even tried using a slower flow one today to see if that helped (because of his congestion), but no dice. He is getting up a few times a night, so he's definitely getting enough milk during the day. His sleep has been crap for about 2 months, so I'm sure that doesn't help matters. I'm not super worried about it. If it is something that happens normally, that is really good to know.

My children both started self-weaning at 9 months. Their milk consumption went down dramatically. At that age, they had milk 4 times a day - before breakfast, before lunch, afternoon, and before bed. In bottles, they took 6oz per feeding at that age. They usually did okay for the morning and evening feedings, but daytime bottles went down to like 4oz a piece. By 12 months, DS1 was barely taking 8-12oz of milk a day (but drinking water) and DS2 was like 12-16oz a day. Ped said if there's cheese and yogurt in their diet, 8oz of milk a day at age 1 is just fine. Before that point, she said shoot for 12-16oz of milk a day and water.

Both my kids are healthy and happy. And FWIW, I don't subscribe to food before 1 is just for fun. Some kids like nursing and milk, some kids like food. If he likes solids, it totally makes sense that he would be less interested in milk, cuz he's just not as hungry. I know some BFing mothers who actually cut way down on solids for their babies because they felt milk was more important, and I just personally never understood that.

Also one other thing is you may want to look at a faster nipple. Our kids moved to the fastest nipple around 10 months old?

Our little guy will be 9 months in a week or so and for the past 3 weeks, it's been quite a struggle to get him to drink breastmilk out of a bottle at daycare. He has been on solids since 6 months and eats like a champ. No lie. This kid acts like a vacuum and does well with eating table foods. He has his bottom two teeth and periodically seems like he is teething (top two teeth), but we can't see anything yet, nor do they really seem to be bothering him too much. He has had a cold for a few weeks, so some days is more congested than others, but there doesn't really seem to be any correlation to him being stuffy and not taking a bottle.

He has been averaging maybe 8 oz of milk during daycare, when he used to take 16oz. Today, she's only been able to get him to take 3oz. I have one sippy that we've tried (and she is trying to use too), but hasn't been a huge success.

Any ideas of what to do? I know that food before one is only for fun, so that's why I'm somewhat concerned. I will say that he nurses perfectly when we are home, so I don't think that it's an ear infection. There is no pulling at his ears or issues with laying down. I guess that I'm pulling at straws regarding what to try next.

UPDATE! We checked for lipase (nope) and checked for tongue ties (also nope) and finally set up an appointment with the early intervention nurse therapist (they see my son for sensory and speech therapy).

She said at this point DD not only dislikes fake nipples, but has a negative association with them after trying them for the past month (and we picked the bottle she gagged the least on and have stuck with it the past two weeks, but no progress, so I think she's spot on).. Since DD's doing well with a spoon, she recommended keeping that up with mixed milk in it. The concern she had was just preventing her from getting dehydrated at daycare.

Also, and I feel stupid about this one, she recommended the munchkin 360 cups. No fake spout with negative associations, flow on demand, and she already loves biting everything! So I pulled out our toddler's old one and she liked it! Not sure how much she managed to drink vs dribbling out, but she kept trying!

@codeitall: oh i SO feel your pain. That was me and my LO. I'm pretty sure I posted about this a year and a half ago...

You've gotten a lot of great advice already... but here was what worked for us.

We tried almost every bottle under the sun, the ONLY one he would take (when he would drink at all) was the Lansinoh mOmma bottle... he would eventually reluctantly take a few ounces a day, our saint of a daycare teacher struggled with him daily for months, but she was persistent.... we also started very liquid oatmeal right away... so he would eat at least 4 oz of breastmilk off of a spoon milked with oatmeal. he loved it! this isn't the best thing to hear, but finally at around 8/9 months he started drinking from a bottle more regularly, ha! little stinker.

So for at least 2.5 years they've said 4mos is fine.
BUT it wasn't a substitute for a bottle. It was supplemental and more for practice. So I wouldn't be skipping milk for it.

Six months is not a hard rule -- it's more about the child displaying readiness. And if you read anything about "open gut" in infants being a reason to hold off on food, please disregard that. It's not supported by science. FWIW, we did wait until about six months, and in retrospect I wish we had started sooner.
