It's honestly a free for all IMO! You never know what your baby likes/dislikes!

We got a rock & play gifted; DD was barely in it, didn't like it. We ended up co-sleeping early on, so didn't use the pack & play that much either. We also had a bouncer, it served to have her put down here & there. It helped that all of them were gifts/hand me downs so I didn't spend any $ on them!

for us- swing - essential. Bouncer - totally optional but we had it in a different room so it was useful but wouldn't have bought one if it hadn't been given to us. Pack and Play - only use for travel but for 6 months had a little travel bassinet which was smaller to pack. Had a regular bassinet for sleeping in our bedroom for the first 4 months before transitioning to crib.

We had the basics, a lot of the good stuff wasn't available in the location where I lived, and if it was, it was expensive!

So, we had a regular crib, a bassinet I purchased for $50 from a friend and a tiny swing, that's it. When my son got older, I had the very basic pack and play that we could use for travel (it's the tiny model that could fit into a big suitcase).

All naps and overnight sleep were either in the bassinet or crib. We never did swing naps because my husband was against it.

@rockinghorse: Thanks for all the info! I wasn't even aware of the travel size PNP... now another option for me to think about haha! I suppose the downside to that is the baby will grow out of it a lot faster than the full size version?

I think that some sort of bassinet-type situation is something most people use for at least 4-6w after the birth. Whether that's a standalone bassinet, a PNP bassinet option, whatever. I think there are rare people who just go immediately to a crib, some people who just always co-sleep, and there are definitely people who use something like that for longer. But I don't think it's a bad assumption that you will like/want one since it's way easier to get a baby in/out of a smaller space that you don't have to bend over as far to reach.

Other than that, I think it's very specific to your house, lifestyle, parenting techniques, and kid's preferences, so just buy whatever you think would be helpful (I'd pick like one or maybe two things), borrow stuff you'd like to try out once the baby gets here and you are seeing what works/doesnt, and then get rid of whatever didn't work.

We started with a PNP w/ lots of bells and whistles and a bouncer for DD1. We used the PNP as the bassinet but never really after that -- we didn't need it much as a playyard (FT daycare), found it a pain to travel with (both grandparents bought basic ones that lived at their houses, and we just used hotel PNP/cribs most times). We sold it when she was a year and bought a Guava Family Lotus, which is amazing since it's actually fly-able for the times you need it. She loved the bouncer, so we kept that for DD2 (and coming LO3). We never got any other things like that because our kids both slept/napped in their cribs by 7w and I never felt I needed any additional baby containers.

I have a 10 week old, and so far this is what I think...

I registered for an infant to toddler rocker
https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-T2518-Newborn-to-Toddler-Portable-Rocker/dp/B002OOWAB2/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467579826&sr=1-4&keywords=infant+to+toddler+rocker
a pack and play
https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Playard-Reversible-Napper-Changer/dp/B00GY8J8H8/ref=sr_1_3_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467579874&sr=1-3&keywords=pack+and+play
and a co-sleeping bassinet
https://www.amazon.com/SwaddleMe-By-Your-Side-Sleeper/dp/B00YBADM1O/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467579919&sr=1-1&keywords=co+sleeper+bassinet

We liked the co-sleeping bassinet between our pillows for the first couple of weeks when she was too tiny for us to comfortably co-sleep with her (I am breastfeeding and want her close at hand). We would also use the rocker between our pillows when she was having some reflux issues. It has some nice adjustments for head height. After a couple weeks, though, we just wanted the bed back. We have a small bedroom, and the pack and play (which we have in the livingroom, useful for naps) won't fit. We then ordered a travel pack and play
https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Travel-Lite-Stages-Manor/dp/B00HAZUJLI/ref=sr_1_7_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467580184&sr=1-7&keywords=travel+pack+and+play
This has been really nice next to the bed for night time and for naps, and it just fits. We can also use this camping. The specific one we have has three stages, and we obviously have only used the one so far.
We also ended up ordering a swing after 8 weeks
https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Comfy-Cove-Swing-Rory/dp/B00XJ68Q12/ref=sr_1_11_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467580313&sr=1-11&keywords=graco+swing
and I can't believe we didn't get one sooner! I can get short naps and some periods of contented awakeness where I can do things like eat (!) or laundry (!) or the dishes (!). Get a swing! I also still am using the rocker, and can rock it with my foot and can drag it around the house. She also loves the 2 little bugs that hang from the arm. She smiles at them!

We also got a second hand bouncer like this
https://www.amazon.com/Bright-Starts-Safari-Smiles-Bouncer/dp/B00PAUF3MU/ref=sr_1_4_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1467580531&sr=1-4&keywords=bouncer
that we drag around outside and for picnics and whatnot, but our rocker would work find for that as well. We just keep the other one designated for outside. It might be a little smaller and travel a little better too, but it isn't that big of a deal.

All in all, you will get things you don't need, and not need things you get, and that's just the way of the baby. :silly:

We had:

- Rock n' Play
- Pack n' Play with changing table, newborn napper & bassinet attachments
- Fisher Price Snugabunny bouncer
- Fisher Price Cradle n' Swing

LO slept in the RnP for the first 2.5 months. It was awesome! But it was hard to transition to the crib.

The PnP & attachments was nice to have downstairs for diaper changes or to have a place to set her. She never really slept in it until she was bigger and we used it as a travel crib. Around 6-9 months she would use it as a playpen for short periods and that was nice.

The bouncer got some use as a container but she never loved it. She was a colicky baby though so she wasn't happy in one place for a long time.

The SWING. Oh, the swing! We didn't have one for the first several weeks and then we finally borrowed one to see how she liked it. She loved it and it SAVED us for naps! I wish we'd had it from the start.

What style is your house? I would think about a place to set the baby down per living area.
Master bedroom - PNP with some type of elevated section for a newborn. You prob don't need the changer if your nursery is close by.
Living room - swing
Miscellaneous areas like bathroom if you go to the a shower - portable bouncer seat.

@Goldengirl: we started off with the graco Eli pack n play but it felt huge, cumbersome, and wouldn't fit through our doorways. We returned it for a travel lite crib with stages, which has been great so far--we keep it next to our bed.

In terms of swings, we have three loaners from friends: a graco swing, a cheap bouncy seat that I keep in the kitchen, and a rock n play that stays at my parents. I don't like to have her spend too much time in them though, so they mostly serve as "plop seats" or the occasional nap.

Just keep receipts & packaging!

@Goldengirl: You have gotten lots of great advice. I just wanted to add that you should give a lot of thought to the layout of your house and how you use it. Our living areas are downstairs, with the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. We have a (hand-me-down) PNP in the dining room, and at 7 months, LO still naps sometimes in the infant insert piece - it's been invaluable to have a place to set a sleeping baby without always having to take her upstairs. If we lived in a rancher, I don't know that the PNP would get any use. When LO was a few months old, I found that a lightweight bouncer was terrific, because I could carry it in one hand from room to room and floor to floor while holding the baby in the other hand. That way I didn't need to have tons of different pieces of equipment just to have a place to put her down in each room.

FWIW, I registered for a RNP after seeing it highly recommended all over the internet. It's still in the box.

We never loved the RnP. It was too low and awkward to use as a bassinet and DS never really liked it much anyways. When he was a few months old I would use it occasionally for naps, but that was it. In the beginning we co-slept and used the bassinet level of the PnP.

I liked having various baby containers around but none of them were all that magical. They were just good for a safe place to set him down for a few minutes. He did like the swing, but usually had to be asleep before going in it.

@Goldengirl: so I think what we have established here is, every baby is different. :silly:

My thinking in general is if you have lots of people wanting to buy you stuff, or what you think you might need on a registry, but only remove tags/ wash the things you plan to start with. Then if you need something right away (like, baby will. Not. Sleep. On a flat surface and you are desperate for a rock and play) pull it out and you are set. Otherwise have them saved for later on Amazon and you can get them in two days or send your husband or someone to target that day if necessary!

The pack n play has been one of our essential baby gear items. We have the model with the reversible napper/changer. We moved the napper around the house during the day in place of a bouncer. She slept in it in the bathroom while I showered. My daughter slept in the napper, on the floor by our bed, until she was 4 months, when we moved her to her crib. I know it's not designed for nighttime sleep, but I felt that she was secure, she wasn't rolling, and she slept SO well. In the meantime, I used the top, bassinet part of the pack n play, as a changing table. I change her on the floor now, and always planned to, so we didn't get a changing table. Now we use the pack n play for a bed when we travel.

We also had a mamaroo, which she barely used. I'm a strong proponent of getting just the minimum gear, and buying later if necessary.

I have a crib, swing, pack and play, bouncer chair (at my parents') and a high chair/booster chair that I could use on day one because it has an adjustable incline.

The swing was invaluable from new born to about 3 months. It allowed me to make myself breakfast and have a break sometimes. She slept in her crib beside our bed from day one. I thought I would use the pack and play in the living room downstairs, but she never slept well in it so I have gotten use out of it only when travelling really. I just got a plain one that has the bassinet level you can use until they're 15 pounds/rolling over.

I just remembered I had a tiny fold up bassinet that we kept on our coffee table when we brought her home for the hospital. We used that for 1.5 months and that could be taken to people's houses.

We also used the high chair from day one and would sit her at the table when we ate which was handy.

We put her in her own room at 6 months and didn't have to transition to a crib since she always slept at night in her crib and took most naps there when I realized she didn't like the pack and play for some reason.

Short version: my necessary items are a high chair that you can use with infants, swing, and pack and play. You can use a pack and play for much much longer than a bassinet and I also don't think you need a fancy one. I just got a plain graco on sale from Sears for $89 or something.

@catlady: I really like the look of the Tiny Love rocker since it seems to take care of the issue of being both flat and reclining. But after a quick search, like the RNP, it looks like it's not available in Canada! I don't know why we can't get all these things but I think it has something to do with our regulations being a bit tighter. Dang.

@Goldengirl: yea that makes sense! I was thinking put it on your registry so that someone else can buy it for you 😄 But if you're not worried about it, it's always something you can worry about later.
If you think you'll be visiting family often then a basic pnp that stays with them makes sense. That's what my parents did.
Hotels generally have mini cribs or pnps you can request.
The only time you really need to bring your own stuff is, for example, visiting a friend or renting a house at the beach. Not all of them have gear.
We travel quite a bit so the lotus makes sense for us. But it's definitely something you can wait and make a decision on when the time comes.

For LO, we had a Rock n Play, a Pack n Play, a swing, and a small rocker (similar to a bouncer). She used the RnP for night sleep and the swing for naps until we attempted to transition her to the crib at around 3 months. Up until that point, I thought those two items were magical but honestly the transition was horrific (two months of the worst sleep ever, finally needed to sleep train). LO1 hated the rocker and we never really tried her in the PnP until she was older (we use it for travel).

This time around, I am going to attempt to have LO2 get used to sleeping on his back earlier so I think we are going to set up the PnP in our room (or possibly pick up a bassinet). I'm also considering getting something like the Tiny Love rocker-napper because it can get very close to flat. We no longer have the Rock n Play, the swing, or the old rocker and I am going to do my best to get by without replacing them.

We had a rock n play and a basic pack n play. If we have a second LO I would consider a swing but we didn't use one with LO.

I think the PNP with bassinet is great if you are wanting a transitional sleep item that will also have long term use.

I'm a fan of trying them in their crib first. With all my kids we put a twin bed in their room for us to sleep in and started them almost from the get go in the crib. If there are too many sleep issues, then you can go run to the store and get whatever you think might help. You can always set up the crib in your room as well, we just like having a spare bed so one of us is getting uninterrupted sleep and we can switch off.

As far as naps, I like a swing if they are refusing the crib. The bouncer/vibration seat never really did the trick for my girls, but every baby is different and you won't know until you try things what will work best. For #3 we got a combo 4 in 1 chair thing so it swings both directions, vibrates and it can be taken off and manually rocked in other locations around the house. Since she isn't here, not sure if I'd recommend it.

@Foodnerd81: @SweetiePie: I think I won't rush to worry about travel stuff for now, can't think of anywhere we'd be going anytime soon... definitely not on a plane. The only place we'll likely stay sometimes is my parents' and knowing them they'll just buy something to keep permanently in their house to lure us over there!

@Goldengirl: @SweetiePie: I agree that the PnP is very bulky and heavy for travel- it would make no sense to fly with it since you would pay more to check it rounds trip than to buy a cheap one at your destination. BUT the nicer ones are so much more expensive that for me it worked out cheaper to actually just buy a basic one at my destination and donate it after.

I don't think the bells and whistles in a pack and play are necessary, but you DO definitely want one with the bassinet level piece so you don't have to put a tiny sleeping baby all the way on the bottom- so not the newborn napper, just the bassinet level, like this one: Graco Pack N Play Playard Bassinet with Automatic Folding Feet, Pasadena https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004Y9AKZI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xh.DxbAWRRV62

We have used a rock and play from the beginning with both babies, and never had a problem and our pediatrician never had a problem. Yes there was some adjustment when we transitioned but I would take anything that helped get them to sleep in the beginning. It's also a handy place to put baby down while awake and nice that you don't have to squat all the way down like a bouncy seat. This is especially nice if you have curious pets or older children. So, personally I'm a huge fan of the rnp.

Neither of my kids really liked the swing. We had a small hand me down one but easily could have gotten by without it. They both liked this kind of ugly hand me down bouncy seat a ton though- it has some dangly toys hanging over it and vibrates. My six month old still hangs out in it sometimes and it's a handy place to put her while I shower (she's had a cold so I bring the whole seat in so she can breath the steam).

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I did. I agree that for being marketed towards c-section moms, it's still not great. It's still really hard/painful to swivel and push the side down. Good ideas but not ideal. I imagine it'll keep improving since I had the first generation.

@Goldengirl: I think that could definitely work for you! Just be open to change. That's my only advice. We always have ideas before the baby comes and then...doesn't always work out. Babies are weird. Some hate things that others love. I think it's wise to start with as little as possible and add if you have to (i.e. Desperation).

As for the PNP for travel...it's a beast. They're usually pretty heavy and definitely have to be checked. The travel cribs (lotus and bjorn are comparable and the best two) are light and compact. Can even fit in the overhead bin.
If you think most of your travels will be driving then it may be a nonissue and the pnp will work for you.

I'm seeing now the it appears the Rock N Play isn't even sold in Canada, so that might make that decision a lot easier for me! In that case, I'd be leaning towards a PNP for sleeping at the beginning and hanging out in later, and then an inexpensive bouncer chair for use during the day in other rooms. Would that combo work?

It seems a lot of people did the bassinet thing but I just don't feel great about something that will be used for such little time. Lucie's List on sleeping kind of sold me on that idea: "In my opinion, the play yard solution is better than a bassinet or cradle because you can use it for years to come, and it’s a must-have for travel." But interested to hear opinions if you disagree with that setup!

We used a bassinet for night sleep until 3.5 months. I wanted to move him to his crib early because of the grunting but my husband wasn't comfortable. We had a swing for naps. It was the fisher price snuga bunny. We also had the mamaroo (bought it used) and he didn't mind chilling in it but never once slept in there. He was a motion junky so we had to put him in the swing on high speed!

@SweetiePie: @Goldengirl: we haf a Halo bassinet too and I did not have success with it at all. Agree that it's small and would have a short span of use no matter what.
