I love all these tips for shopping the sales and also the brands to try! Thanks all! I probably should've started looking last fall for this fall, but at least I know for the future.

Boden and Tea. Boden is def pricier - you can stock up in Tea for $10-15 per dress at their EOS sale.

I guess I'm on the other end of the spectrum. My mom buys my kids Gymboree clothing all the time because she usually finds a lot on sale, but I finally told her to just save her money because the clothing falls apart so fast and I've felt like the quality is so poor, moreso the girls clothing than the boys.

We usually shop Old Navy for play clothing and Gap--I never pay full price and I feel like they are almost always running at least a 40% off online. Special occasions we will do Nordstroms or Crew Cuts.

I agree with you on Gymboree quality and price. I just bought some cute stuff in sizes 5 and 8 from there. The clothes look way better in person than online so maybe go into a store if you're shopping online. Gap (definitely not Old Navy) is the closest to Gymboree quality and price IMO. I don't like HA and Boden styles, but it's so hard to find quality clothes nowadays that I've even wandered over there. :bummed:

Nordstrom kids clothes are great quality (peek and tucker and Tate. Tucker and Tate is actually made by/for Nordstrom). I buy them on sale or at the rack
I also like Bonds and Australian company. Their stuff washes and wears well and is funky..it's not typical florals and super girly which I appreciate. More tomboy/surfer. Plus the us dollar is strong and free shipping over 100 Australian dollars. Their stuff runs large

@Shantuck: the firearm quality is nothing like Boden. The styles are; but it's definitely a knockoff in every sense. I've ordered a couple and they are much thinner cotton, sewing/seams are off and the wash wear is insane. They are not made to last more than a couple wears :bummed:

We do a lot of Facebook BST and also like Nordstrom Rack brands like Joe Fresh and Epic Threads. The prints and styles are hit or miss (but mostly hit), cottons are soft and they wash/wear better and longer than Carters or Old Navy/Gap.

I also shop clearance Boden and Tea like previous posters. I also really like Joules brand, from the U.K. (I believe)

For Boden lovers, I recently discovered how to buy several of the same dresses on Amazon for much cheaper. Look up Fiream on Amazon and dresses that retail for $45 on Boden cost $15 on Amazon. Here is an example:

Boden: http://m.bodenusa.com/en-us/girls-dresses/day-dresses/33507-blu/girls-bright-bluebell_ivory-stripe-favourite-pet-dress

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Fiream-Girls-Cotton-Sleeve-Dress/dp/B01N59V9D5 (select the horse dress from the color options)

ETA: I just ordered two dresses for my baby and got them this week and the quality seems good. My niece wears these all the time and loves them.

If you can be a little flexible about colors/patterns, Hanna and Tea sale (clearance) prices get really really low - like $11-14/dress - several times per year. I find Tea a little hit or miss on quality, personally, though I love the style.

I would also check out a Nordstrom Rack - some of Nordstrom's own brands are nicer quality and more stylish than kiddie stores, and they're reasonably priced at Rack.

In general, I find UK brands to be better quality/more timeless style; but it comes at a price. eBay and BST groups are good for deals!

Following! My girl is 5.5 and wearing size 6 mostly and it's pretty bleak out there. I definitely make an effort to find good sales at HA, Gymboree, Janie and jack (dressier). I buy some stuff at carter's or target knowing it won't last. We no longer live in a cold climate so we mostly layer vs needing to be super warm every day.
I've also had good luck sometimes at dept stores. We have belk here and they have some good sales to get stuff like polo brand sweaters or nice coats for cheap. Her elementary school encourages uniforms and though boring it's kind of nice to stick to a few easy pieces!

You could check out lands end - we have some that holds up well and they have a great return policy if you have an issue. (And they often have great coupon codes if you search.) And I would think it's cold weather friendly. We have socks and pants from primary.com and have been happy with quality - they also have free returns if you want to order and see what you think.

I am struggling with this too. I do a lot of used shopping for hanna and boden- on kidizen and facebook groups, and then try to buy ahead when they have sales.
Primary is really nice quality. I got a couple of their sweatshirts for my daughter and some bodysuits for my son and was very pleased with them.

We live in a cold climate, my daughter typically wears a long sleeved shirt and then a zip-up hoodie or sweater to school. On very cold days in the winter I do a wool base layer under a t-shirt.

My daughter is between a 5 and 6, meaning we've started looking at "big girl" clothes. I can't stand the styles! I'm a Gymboree fan: we usually shop the sales, but the quality can't be beat at the price point. Their shirts are much thicker than other brands (Carter's, Old Navy, etc.), and everything we pass down to her younger sister still looks great. Hanna Andersson and Boden are our only clothes of similar quality, but they were all gifts--they're outside my price range. The problem is Gymboree has great baby and toddler styles, but their big girl styles are awful. Why can't the just make the same things in bigger sizes :bummed:

Can anyone recommend a brand similar in quality and price to Gymboree? I'm not very familiar with non-mainstream brands. Has anyone tried primary.com? I like the look but can't tell if the shirts are thin like Old Navy/Carter's. Feedback from cold weather climate mom's much appreciated! Those Old Navy and Carter's shirts don't cut it during our winters.
