Ugh hand expression was the worst. I had to do it for a 5 day weekend away when someone who shall not be named threw out my membranes (yes, I tore through 5 bags of garbage in the garage; we had ribs for dinner, enough for 8 ppl. You can just imagine what that was like). So no membranes to be found anywhere on a holiday weekend. So I hand expressed. It was AWFUL

I've only ever used a manual and I love it (as much as one can love a pump of course!), but I'm a SAHM and only pump on the odd occasion to build up a small stash.

I've never done anything but double electric... Time is money!! And since I mostly pump at work I usually need my hands to still do work on the computer to save time.

I really liked the manual for actual pumping/production. I felt like I got a lot more suction. But of course the hands free double electric was the best for personal benefit (use phone, eat, etc).

Double electric forever! If you are in the US you should be able to get some kind of pump for free from your insurance. My friend just told me about a website called Edgepark that will see what is covered under your plan and then ship it to your house for free. Or you can call the insurance company and ask about your options and how to order.

Hand expression is awful! So tiring. Double electric all the way. Manual I can't relax enough to get a good pump because I'm too focused on doing the work. I would probably only use it if I am nursing and want to pump the other side (although I also just set up a single side electric for that- but to be quicker about clean up manual would work in this case only for me). Plus hands-free to be on my phone

When I was nursing, I used the hand held, because I was just pumping 1 side at a time.

When I was EPing, I always use the electric pump, so I can be hands free and surf the internet.

What is your favorite method of pumping and why?

I prefer electric because I'm lazy, but manual pump is faster and gets more milk... and takes up less space in my bag and costs less and I don't need an outlet, but it also takes more attention/focus.

I wish I were better at hand expression.

i didn't want to "waste" bags so i froze in 6 oz potions or more. Since i only defrosted to rotate my stash once a week. I also froze 2 oz reusable bottles for days she needed more than i pumped the day before.

@peaches1038: I also recommend the Nuk bags. I had much better luck with them. The plastic is thicker. The downside is they don't freeze as flat. The upside is I have never had one leak and I have literally used thousands. I can't say the same for Lansinoh...they have nearly brought me to tears many times by leaking. They freeze beautifully flat though.

I started doing 6 oz because I was trying to be efficient with bags. Then read it's better to freeze in smaller portions like 2 oz. So I did 2 oz for a while but it was such a PITA to portion out so many bags. So I switched to 4 oz, which is what I do now. Though I like the idea of doing 4 oz and 3 oz, so I can make different combinations, so I might start doing that.

Right now we're fine because my husband is home with the baby, but I don't know what we're going to do about daycare. Because he doesn't take a consistent amount at each feeding. Sometimes he'll take 2 oz, sometimes he'll take 8. It really varies a lot. And all the daycare centers that I've found require you to send filled bottles and if a bottle isn't finished they won't reuse the remainder at the next feed. So I'm thinking about sending in 2 oz bottles and they can just use multiple bottles per feed, but that would mean sending something like 10 bottles per day!

Also, when we thaw, we stand the bags upright in a tall tupperware container so that we don't risk leaks.
