Ugh. I'll email his ped then. He's the only micropreemie I know that is not on a breathing treatment or steroids and every time someone listens to his lungs (including Tuesday of this week), they say they sound great... At least we've kept him healthy for 18 months now!

LO was full-term but has been diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease as a result of a really severe case of RSV at 5 months. Poor kid is practically attached to the nebulizer. We do Pulmicort twice a day whether he's sick or not and then add in Albuterol if he shows any signs of a cold. Even with that he wheezed most of the winter but we have had a really good last few weeks and hopefully are going to wean off the steroid in May.

It's so hard to watch:( If his wheezing continues, the nebulizer definitely helps and is very simple. My LO looks forward to it because it's the only time he gets to use the iPad!

Also, I was a preemie and I wheezed a lot as a kid. Still do if I get a bad cold.

My LO is wheezing now. She has a small pneumonia. She's 13 months and not a preemie. It's clearly worse when she has a fever. It seems that Tylenol (to keep the fever down) works better than the albuterol + prednisone + inhaled steroid combined.

@Mrs Green Grass: It is VERY common among former preemies to wheeze. But my son was full term and he had one episode of wheezing too. A few weeks after that he had an infection that got into his lungs and he was admitted to the hospital and on oxygen for several weeks :( He wasn't wheezing at that time but once the lungs take a hit they can take several months to recover, unfortunately.

@Mrs Green Grass: J wheezes when he gets sick. I have heard a nurse call it "cold induced asthma" but he is still too young to be officially diagnosed with asthma. When he does start wheezing, we have a breathing treatment that we give him for immediate relief and another maintenance breathing treatment that should shorten the duration and severity. During Nov/Dec last year he had a couple of instances where he was really straining to breathe and breathing hard (you could see his ribs) and I took him to his ped's after hours care and he got a steroid prescription - prednisone - and that helps a lot too. I still have some left over from the last episode and I give it to him when he gets a cold and I can hear it coming.
I totally think its because he's a preemie. I only got one steroid shot before he was born, but he did okay in the NICU and was never on breathing assistance. I have heard that they usually outgrow the cold induced asthma.
It's scary at first, but we have figured out how to handle and manage it and its much better now.

I'm wondering if this is normal or a preemie problem, LO is 15 months adjusted (18.5 actual) and he's had very short wheezing episodes over the last week (2 times). Tonight he was crying pretty hard before and the other night he threw up around the same time. And I know wheezing is common with sickness in kids. He doesn't seem overly upset or straining to breathe...but it scares me!

Does your LO ever wheeze? When? And does LO have a documented medical issue related to it?
