Wow! I just came back to this thread that is 11 months old. I can't believe I have been using CD's for over a year!

Just to update:

The 2 GroVia shells are holding up ok. The H&L is rolling over a bit even though they are line dried. The fit is still wonderful on my LO now that she is 15 months and 26lbs.

We also did try the BG4.0's Pockets. They are ok. I hate the inserts and some of my pockets have relaxed elastic in the legs even with line drying. It causes leaks some times. We also have 2 BG Elementals and they have held on great! I don't always like the fit of these and how the inner cotton bunches up.

We also have several Charlie Bananas (size M) that I got on sale from zulily. We really love how soft these are and the pocket opening in front. It is a microfiber insert but each diaper comes with two and they seem to be holding up better than the BG4.0 microfiber inserts.

Lastly, we did go back and try a Thristies Duo Diaper (their pocket diaper). I really like the fit of these and I LOVE the insert. The velcro on these does not hold up at all. Again, no trouble with leaks.

To try to save our pockets even though our inserts were shot, I bought a pack of 3 organic Flip prefolds. I love these. They hold SO much and never stink. The flip cover is nice too (wipes out unlike Grovia) if you want to do the prefold plus a cover route.

@Thehistoryofus: cool. Maybe they'd let you use pocket diapers too, since they aren't doing the wash. So long as you stuffed them before you sent them along?

** UPDATE **

The event went really well!

We were able to try on diapers which was amazing. First we tried on a Thirsties cover but I wasn't a fan of how they fit my LO with her thighs. Then we tried on a GroVia cover and they fit much better.

I thought I wanted snaps, but I actually went with the hook and loop (velcro) because they are more like disposables and easier to just slap on (no lining up the snaps). The GroVia also has that really nice soft hook and loop (fine velcro not the rough kind). The BumGenius Ones were the rougher velcro.

I got a GroVia starter kit which includes 4 snap in inserts and 2 shells. We used them last night and I am happy with them. She did leak overnight (she was on her belly) so I may have to add some inserts. She doesn't seem to mind the feel of the cloth vs. disposable at all.

I think it will be a slow start, but we will keep trying. I am going to talk to daycare on Monday because someone said if you use an AIO, they may let you use cloth and if I could get the BumGenius AIO that are on clearance right now maybe I could send those to daycare.

@owlmom: no problem! I forget where I read that (I can't take credit for the idea) - but I've been researching cloth diapers since before I was pregnant so I have lots of random bits of information, haha! It's also a good trick if you're noticing certain brands of diapers are irritating LO's skin. Instead of having wasted the money on the diaper, just put a layer of fleece (or any other moisture wicking fabric) between baby and the diaper!

@owlmom: I don't have any solutions for a baby that poops a lot (lol), but for moisture wicking you can go and buy like a yard of fleece from any fabric store and cut it into rectangles and just place that between the pre-fold and baby's bum. Its a super cheap way to add a "moisture wicking" layer to a pre-fold!

My LO poops pretty frequently, so this might not apply to you, but I've found that when we're using prefolds and covers and she poops, poop almost always gets on the shell. If your LO has multiple evening/night runny poops, you may want more covers. Also, if you're using a regular cotton prefold and LO pees in the middle of the night, the moisture is going to sit against her skin, which could cause her to wake up and demand a change in the middle of the night, or possibly diaper rash if you don't change her. Not really a problem with using them on newborns since they wake a lot at night anyway, but I'm guessing your LO is generally sleeping through the night at 5 months. The nice thing about snap in inserts, pockets, most fitteds, etc is that the layer of cloth next to the baby's skin is designed to wick moisture away from the skin, and the layers underneath absorb the liquid. For that reason, I only use prefolds and covers during the day. I would consider using the snap in inserts or fitteds for night use if you want to go the cover+seperate inner route. Just my experience, though.

Ooh I forgot to add, that I am thinking of just using snaps instead of Hook and Loop enclosures. If I'm investing money, I want them to last and I hear older babies have a harder time getting the snaps off. Does that seem to make sense?

@Navy_Mommy: Thanks so much for all of the information!
The event I'm going to tomorrow I don't think carries Best Bottoms, but the shells are super cute and I like the idea of a double gusset. My LO has chunky legs so that is my only concern about the double gusset being too tight on her (she was in size 3 'sposies at 4 months because they were cutting her off around the leg). I assume you can use the BestBottoms with a prefold insert instead of their snap in inserts as well?

@Thehistoryofus: I'm planning on cloth diapering full time once Navy_Baby gets here in April and we chose to use a combination of pockets and hybrids. Part of me actually wishes I had chosen to do 100% hybrid but so many people speak so highly of pocket diapers I couldn't resist.

I have purchased Grovia shells, Best Bottom shells, and Flip shells.

The Grovia shells are very nice, but their inserts are expensive (generally 2 for $18). I do like that their inserts have an additional gusset to help contain everything and prevent them from touching the actual shell though.

The Best Bottom shells are my favorite based off of my first impression. They seem very durable, the shell itself has a double gusset, and the inserts are much less expensive. Also, the inserts come in different sizes (grovia inserts are one size). This means that you'll have to buy more over time but they make the diapers a lot less bulky in the beginning.

I'm really not impressed with the Flip covers. They seem flimsy compared to the Grovias and the Best Bottoms. And, instead of the inserts snapping in (to stay in place) they just tuck under flaps. Because of that I'm not buying any Flip inserts, I'm just going to use them to cover pre-folds and I might get some of their disposable inserts for traveling.

Hope that helps a bit (even though I still don't even have a baby to put the diapers on, I've researched the hell out of CDs, lol)!

@MsMamaBear: With hybrid diapers you don't have to wash the shell every time (which is one of the perks of hybrids)! The Best Bottom page on Kelly's Closet has some of the best illustrations (in my opinion): http://www.kellyscloset.com/Best-Bottom-One-Size-Diapers-Cover-Only_p_4145.html

Grovia states the following:
"Even an AI2 system like GroVia requires 14 Shells, 38 Soaker pads for full time diapering."

So, clearly, if you only need 14 shells you're using them multiple times before washing.

(PS - All-in-two {AI2} and Hybrid are the same thing, lol)

Oh,ok. I use pockets, so I didn't know. lol Maybe get a few more shells then. Maybe 2? I know I don't change my baby as much at night so that's just a suggestion. Is an insert the same as a pocket? Or it goes on top and the shell doesn't even get wet?

I do laundry 3 times a wk, 25 diapers, most are bumGenius, 10 AIOs, rest pockets. I also get Diaper Rite's, which are about $10 each at http://www.diaperjunction.com

I am hoping to start cloth diapering my 5 month old little girl at least overnight. If its successful, maybe more often. I do not have time to do laundry more than every three days (usually more like twice a week for her).

Based on some limited research, here is what I'm thinking I will start with and I'm hoping everyone can comment and let me know if this sounds ok.

All-in-One versus Hybrid:
I think I would like to use hybrids. It sounds like they are cheaper (shell+insert) and easier to clean. I do not like the idea of having to unstuff a pocket and I don't think I want the expensive AIO's that take a long time to dry.

Brands:
I have heard the most about GroVia hybrids and am going to look at them tomorrow. I think they run about $15-17 new for the shell. I have also heard about Flip hybrids. I am not really interested in GDiapers. Anything else I should look at? I think if I do try an AIO, I would try a BumGenius.

Inserts:
I think I will try a pack of the GroVia snap ins (2 for $17) but also a pack of prefolds (I heard the Bummis Organics 6 for $28 is good, but looking for suggestions). Since this is for overnight, I"m not sure if I need anything else? What is a liner for and do I need it? Do I need anything else to stuff for overnights? Again, I'm trying to not have to buy a ton of stuff to get started, but also want to have supplies on hand to be successful.

I'm hoping I can get 1 shell, some liners and maybe an AIO to try out and spend less than $50 just to get started to see how things work. Does this sound reasonable?
