Satin ice makes great fondant.

I've used the shimmer/pearl dust before, and its really easy to use. If you mix it with a little vodka, it paints on well, and then the vodka evaporates and leaves just the pretty, shimmery dust.

You are using fondant, I assume? That look would be pretty impossible with buttercream, I think.

Looks like something like this mixed with glitter and painted on:
http://www.amazon.com/AmeriColor-Amerimist-Airbrush-Color-Metallic/dp/B001FXU6MS/ref=sr_1_2/184-4521344-0620840?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1413921237&sr=1-2

Girl, you are crazy for agreeing to bake 200 cupcakes and a wedding cake on/around your due date!

I have seen them use that Pearl Dust that @HappyBaker: mentioned on Cake Boss, I bet that would work.

ETA: this might seem crazy, but this is the website of the bakery that made the cake... maybe you could email them and ask? http://www.sweetoncake.com/gallery/wedding-cakes/

Oooh that is tricky!

I found this - Wilton Color Mist, but it's not going to have the speckled/glittery look.
http://www.partycity.com/product/gold+color+mist.do?extcmp=google_pcPLA&kwid=gold%20color%20mist&qcid=&ref=ci&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=42-3301415-2

Or maybe Wilton Pearl Dust - it says you can mix it with vanilla to paint it on:
http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=pg_pearldust

HELP!!

So I am making a wedding cake for my cousin (only 1 tiered) because I am also making 200 cupcakes. But she chose the design below for her cake- overall easy. What do you think they used for edible glitter? All the ones I have used are more like dust or big chunks of sanding sugar. How do you think they got that brushed look?

Help. I am starting to panic because she is getting married on my due date for LO #2- so I need to get my act together!

I think I'll do a trial & error run with @abbylyn whipped frosting since I have those ingredients in house. I'm not quite handy when it comes baking so if the whipped frosting doesn't turn out well, I'll just stick with the good ol' simple buttercream as @Boogs suggested.

Thanks everyone!

To make your life easier do a simple buttercream recipe. You can incorporate different flavors in it, but you definitely want a buttercream to get the nice crust. While I love to eat Swiss merengue buttercream, it's not always the most friendly for piping decorations. One recipe I really love: http://www.mysweetandsaucy.com/2008/02/my-favorite-vanilla-buttercream-recipe/

i liked that frosting for my LO's cake --- it's light because of the whipped cream, but crazy delish because of the cream cheese.

the trick to having it NOT melt and to keep definition is..... using Nutriwhip (blue box in the dairy aisle beside the heavy cream). It's totally processed and probably 90% synthetic, but it works and tastes fine, especially when mixed with icing. It is also already lightly sweetened, so you won't want to add sugar to it, like you would regular whipped/heavy cream.

In order to get it more pipe-able i would use considerably less whipcream/nutriwhip to icing ratio than the recipe indicates.

anyway, this is for a lighter feeling/tasting topping --- if you want to go more traditional, i'd just go for a regular icing that would pipe well, be more sweet probably, but also be relatively stable in the heat :)

I use recipes from the Magnolia bakery cookbook (there are two, I have the second one). They aren't super duper sweet, but still use plenty of confectioners sugar. My favorites are their chocolate one and lemon, both are pretty thick and would hold piping, but they are very butter heavy. I can find the recipes online somewhere if those sound good.

Hi! Does anyone have a cake frosting recipe that isn't too sweet, doesn't use a lot of confectioner's sugar but is stiff enough to hold some simple piping decorations? I'm looking to simply decorate a 2-3 layer 6in cake for my daughter's 1st bday cake.

Swiss meringue buttercream was suggested by a friend but given how hot it has been lately (we don't have AC!) I'm not sure if the frosting would last while decorating the cake.
