If you can't find the camera body by itself (and B&H doesn't seem to offer it so I'm guessing Nikon wants its authorized retailers to sell it only as a kit -- not sure whether the link Lamariniere posted is for an authorized seller or not) I'd get the 18-55 but pass on the 55-200, and add on a 35 f/1.8G. B&H is a good retailer and usually offers extra goodies like a free camera bag, memory card, etc. It's where I get most of my equipment.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1023353-REG/nikon_1532_d3300_dslr_camera_with.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/606792-USA/Nikon_2183_AF_S_Nikkor_35mm_f_1_8G.html

One more thing. If you get the D3300, make sure any lens you add has its own autofocus mechanism -- the entry-level Nikons don't have an autofocus built into the camera body so you can use lenses without built-in autofocus but would have to focus them manually (not so easy with kids!).

wholeheartedly agree with Purplepeony. I'd check out B&H photo video. I'd guess they would sell the body only .If they don't stock it, it probably doesn't exist! :) Honestly a giant dSLR is sort of overkill if you're not going to get a fast lens. You will be frustrated if you're using the kit lens 18-55 indoors, in low light, or if your LO is fast moving (duh, they all are, ha!) I responded to a similar question a while back with some lens suggestions. I'm a canon user so I can't speak to nikon but I know there is an equivalent. I'd look at a 17-50 2.8 tamron or 17-55 canon 2.8 and pair it with a rebel body. Or a 35 mm prime. I recommend that over a 50 mm prime for an all purpose prime. Get the best lens you can afford and pair it with a entry level body. You can always upgrade the body later if you are maxing the limits of the body (but I'd bet that never happens). Megapixels shouldn't be a deciding factor. They all have plenty unless you are blowing up to like 10 ft b 15 ft!!!

@PurplePeony: Thank you I appreciate the advice.... It doesnt seem like you can purchase the D3300 w/o the 18-55 lens... so i guess I would just do that and purchase another lens in the future.

My main concern is that I'm going to get super frustrated with this camera the way I am with the point and shoot

I don't have any technical advice but I just wanted to say that I have the D3300 and the fact that I can connect my camera to my phone is a total game changer for me. It means I can send out family photos right after I take them. It has made taking and sharing photos so so much easier. So I'd definitely get one that allows you to connect to a mobile device.

@Chillybear: the kit lenses usually aren't the best quality. I have an 18-55 that sits and gathers dust because the pictures it takes are just blah. Especially if you are going to take pictures in lower-light settings (like winter evenings) you want a "faster" lens, i.e. One with a wider maximum aperture. Zoom lenses typically don't open up that much (and the widest aperture varies depending on how much you zoom) unless you get into the $$$$$ ones, but you can get great, affordable prime lenses. You have to "zoom with your feet" but it's really worth it, IMO. Both the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm f/1.8G are under $200 and take MUCH better photos than the kit lens. If you really want a zoom lens, you can go for the kit, but if you want better quality pictures, I'd go for the camera body only and one of the lenses I mentioned above. Bonus, they are smaller and weigh a lot less than most zooms. But whichever way you go, you can always upgrade and add lenses later on.

Sorry, long answer, but I hope it's helpful!

ETA: links to the lenses I mentioned:

I'm team Nikon. I would buy a body and get 35mm and 50mm fixed (prime) lenses instead of the kit lenses. I have two zooms but rarely use them. I have a full frame DSLR and I'm not upgrading anytime soon, but I would defiantly want one with wifi the next time.

I'm team Nikon as well. I ended up splurging on the D7100 for the enhanced functions (most important to me was separate dials to control aperture and shutter speed) and I love it...but obviously it was a budget-buster. That said, I really wish I had looked into mirrorless camera systems instead because it does sometimes stink to have to lug that thing around...mirrorless are somewhere in between a P&S and a DSLR size- and weight-wise, but have pretty much the same features and quality as a DSLR. They're still pretty pricey, though, so I'm not sure if there's one comparable in cost to the D3300. But whatever you decide, definitely get a good prime lens -- I have a 50mm f/1.8 that stays on my camera 95% of the time and the difference in quality between that one and my 18-140 f/2.8-5.6 zoom is amazing. It's just too close for toddler photos, though, so I really need a wider one like a 35mm.

We have a Nikon D5100 and love, love, love it. It's so worth it. The vacation photos we've gotten from it are all over our walls, and the photos of DD's first year are just not comparable to what comes out of our phones. We keep it on the coffee table so it's easy to grab quickly when DD is doing something cute.

I have the Nikon D3100 at work and the D40 at home. I prefer Nikon but that's because that's what I've always used. They take really great pictures in my opinion. I, with my limited knowledge of how to take photos, manage to do a good job (though I do color correct a lot in Photoshop). I do prefer having a separate flash because I hate the built-in flash. I have a Bower Auto Focus SFD728N flash that I really like.

I'm looking at purchasing a DSLR - I mostly use my iphone currently and I have a point and shoot but I'm not crazy about the results I've gotten from it so i rarely use it.

iphone - Pros: I always have it with me, I never use the flash and the photos are easy to put on social media and look good on a screen. Cons: Horrible print quality, I never seem to back it up to my laptop and my iphoto is now horribly unorganized

Point and Shoot: Pros - small, easy to charge, takes good photos in natural light w/o flash, Cons - I can't seem to capture the images I want, either a sec too late or too early, clunky and slow in that i cant take photos in rapid succession (not burst), Pain in the ass to upload to social media/share with others, but it forced me to keep my laptop's iphoto organized and my photos backed up.

Also my laptop is aging (2009) and I rarely use it at home. I mostly use my desktop at work and don't find much time to be on the computer in the evenings.

I'm not a photography novice, I've taken quite a few photography courses over the years however most of them were with manual SLR and film. but I understand the basics of camera function (iso, shutter speed, aperture, etc)

i'm looking at the Canon Rebel T5 or the the Nikon D3300 both are in roughly the same price range

I'm leaning toward the Nikon because of high megapixels and built it wifi.

i'm a professional maternity/newborn/family photographer (also did weddings for 3+ years), and i shoot exclusively nikon. i've used both extensively, and always found myself being pulled back to nikon. the glass for nikons is superior (though more expensive), the coloring is more natural and true-to-life, and the menus and operations are more user-friendly. canons take some beautiful pictures, but they're just not on par with nikon. :)

I have always had Nikon P&S's, but just last week purchased my first DSLR! Went with the Canon Rebel T3i.

Everyone I know with DSLR's has the Canon, so it seemed silly to choose Canon, when I could borrow lenses, seek help/advice from Canon friends. Knew for my level there really wouldn't likely be a difference, so staying loyal to Nikon wasn't a huge factor for me jumping to the DSLR.

So far super impressed and loving this camera! A little 6:30am cottage photo-taking fun attached :)
