@mrs. bird: I was just going to say that!! I've tried to cut all canned products out of my diet after hearing about how cans have BPA in them. And it's a lot too, enough that if someone were to have one canned item a day it could really affect them. Scared me!!

Now I make all my own beans, buy fresh or frozen veggies and fruits either fresh or in glass. Trader Joes sells some in glass, like pears and peaches.

Also some companies don't use BPA - some at Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Ask a grocery worker the next time they're there and they will tell you which ones don't :)

@Thehistoryofus: you can always rinse the fruit too which might cut down on sugar if that's what you're worried about.

@TurtleDoves: I just found that our Walmart carries these Dole fruit cups in the plastic with 100% fruit juice!

I do plastic. Never thought of frozen, scared it'd be mushy. Might try the smoothie idea!

what about the applesauce in a bag-it is made by a french company i think called materne and is organic, but not expensive at all.

i love the 100 calorie pear halves and peaches by dole--not in heavy syrup and not a lot of sugar to make up for the calories either.

Doles sell fruit in a plastic container that is BPA free. So, the fruit is in 100% juice and you don't have that fear of contamination from the can.
I get it from the isle with the snacks--you can get a big jar or like me, the small container: it's individually packaged so kids can take them to daycare (I take mine in the car):

We buy frozen melon for DD because otherwise we end up overbuying and it goes bad before we can eat it all. Her doctor said frozen is fine, and nutriotnally just as good as fresh.

Also, you might look into canning/freezing as a way to save money. In the fall, we go to pick-your-own orchards and then freeze the produce for future use. It's cheaper than buying apples/peaches/pears at the store, especially in the winter.

that's great that she's such a good fruit eater!! would glass or BPA free plastic jars of fruit be an option? i'm sure in limited amounts, fruit in cans would be fine, but a lot of cans are lined with BPA. i'm sure there are resources that list more of them, but this is a start:

Can you blend the fruit into yogurt for a smoothie (to use the frozen fruit)? I do this often, using fruit that's about to go bad, for example. I peel it and then cut it into chunks and then toss it into a baggie. I let it thaw halfway then blend.

My daughter loves fruit, but its often expensive to buy fresh. We are looking to buy either frozen (seems to be messier when it dethaws) or in the can. I have found that I can buy pears and peaches that are not in syrup, just 100% fruit juice. These aren't organic or anything like that but seem to be healthy. Does anyone know of any reason these aren't a good idea? Any other good ways to serve fruit?
