Just say thank you and you'll save it for later and don't give it to your child if you don't want to. As you yourself said, people mean well. It's not worth getting upset over. I think you might need to give these well-intentioned people a break! ;)

@sunny: yes I like stickers too! We went to the vet the other day. the vet (a young lady) doesn't have kids or may not even like kids (from her reaction to LO- vets usually only like animals lol) but she made an effort to go back to her office to find a sticker to give it to him. So sweet of her.

If candies are replaced by stickers, the world will be a much healthier place :)

I am that mean mommy too saying no to sweets. Luckily, so far I have just declined politely saying that LO was too young for sweets right now. Sometimes LO will just hold them because she doesn't really know what lollipops are so she thinks its a toy. However, she's now getting to the point where she is understanding that you can open wrappers and there is something inside to eat so we won't be able to do that anymore.

I am noticing that people are a bit more cognizant that they need to ask the parent's permission (e.g. "Would your LO like a sweet?") rather than just giving it to them. Sometimes they have stickers instead of sweets, so we say yes to those.

@travelgirl1: maybe the candy was meant for you guys lol!! I am so glad our family is on board with me on the candy issue!

@mrbee: in that case I just met more kind strangers than you guys do then. Your kids are super cute!!!!

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: hahaha I am with you- stop giving out all these candy in Halloween becuz I have to eat them lol glad to know I am not alone! I would be so mad if my family gives LO candy on my back "becuz he seem to know what it is". Well if he is curious, tell him no and/or come ask me first!

@locavore_mama: I am so with you on this. I ended up eating that gigantic lollipop from the restaurant and I threw it away halfway cuz it is huge and not even good! I still don't understand why ppl would give this to a 2 year old at a meal, like you are trying to pick a fight between the mom and the child. Glad LO didn't know what it was .

The inevitable was cookie, cake and ice cream becuz they do hv special events (assuming only rarely, hopefully) at daycare and I don't want to single LO out. Then LO sometimes get free ice cream at restaurants. Oh well.

Thankfully, they knew better than to put sweets in her Easter basket this year. ;) next year will probably be a different story!

@locavore_mama: It's super easy for us just now because we're overseas so they can send stuff but not actually give it to her  When we move home, I expect it's a battle we will lose too. But I think I'll be okay with it when she's a bit older, as long as I watch what she has at home, the odd treat with grandparents won't hurt. But I was pretty shocked at the amount of chocolate she got sent for Christmas when she was 13 months old.

@irene: I am that mean mommy that won't give my child that lollipop. When I was home visiting when we were waiting for a table at dinner my niece and nephews were all sucking on a sucker. M wanted one and I said no. My mom tried to offer her one, I said no.

She's 26m, she doesn't need a sugar pop.

I'm a sweets / sugar nazi. I know some people probably think I'm ridiculous for being so. But i don't care. If my child gets a cavity it's going to be because of genetics not because I feed her sugar.

The saddest part is that I know a 3yr old that has the start of her first cavity and the mom gives no sweets or unnecessary sugars either.
@travelgirl1: oy. That is a battle that I've lost with my in laws. They know our stance but just can't help but break it. In their defense it's very minimal, like a small cookie at the grocery store.
I've learned it's not a battle I can win and let that slide as a "special grandparents" thing. ;)

We haven't introduced lollipops, cotton candy, gummy bears, and most other sweets either. I know when my aunt allowed DS to have a few mini-marshmallows back in January before he turned two because "he seemed to know what they are" (without ever asking me first), I was very confused. We get handed lollipops a lot at restaurants and at banks. Sometimes I take them because I have to (like at the drive-thru at the bank, hard to hand it back) but most of the time I try to politely decline before the kids have seen it.

As for Halloween... well it is my favorite holiday but it's mostly because of the costumes, not the candy consumption! I'm going to put together little good bags this year of non-candy related items :) Something different since I don't want my kids to have the candy and it's probably better for my waistline if I don't keep too much temptation in the house.

Is it just me Or does it bother you too when kind strangers always offer your LO with candy, sweets and desserts?

This happens to us quite a few times. Kind strangers think my LO is cute. Then they bring him candy. A waitress in a Japanese restaurant brought him a huge lollipop in the middle of the dinner (I mean seriously lady? I am always struggling to get healthy food in my LO and you brought him this gigantic lollipop in the beginning of a meal??) , and a perfect stranger who saw LO on the plane and thought he was cute, and pulled out a lollipop and gave it to me (which I thanked him and declined).

All these are super nice people and they all meant well, just that I get irritated by this culture. Candy brings cavity and obesity but people give it out as a kind gesture. Halloween just makes me scratch my head to be honest. (I didn't grow up in the USA ... I always know about it but never experienced it fully until last year.) And yes we r the type of parents who still hasn't exposed him to candy yet.... Not even gummy bears or cotton candy. Or even Popsicles. The only candy he tasted was the chocolate from strawberry fondue. LO is 2.5 years old.

I know they probably don't have kids themselves and/or they don't know people who is a pain in the butt like me existed. I know. I am just saying this culture of candy means well bothers me.

Just curious to know your thoughts.
