@BandDmommy: Oh man push away to get a new one, I feel like do you really want to deal with a car that could break down with your family in it? You're the one who drives it right, I would use this as leverage with your DH!

I think I'd push the dealer ship REALLY HARD to get a new one. Sounds like you're pretty close to qualifying as a lemon so I would use that. Won't breaking the lease cost you big $$$? If so that doesn't sound much better to me than riding out the lease and paying for miles.

I'd try to lay down an ultimatum. Fix it NOW...and if this happens again--this check engine shit, whatever--you (Toyota) will replace it with another car. So, one chance to fix it.

@BandDmommy: Have you done research on Lemon Laws in your state? I think you're in VA, if I'm remembering correctly? It would behoove you to look up what they are and start recording days of service in a month/number of time the same issue happens/etc. It doesn't sound like a car I'd want to keep off lease, though, if it's already giving you trouble.

@T.H.O.U.: problem is we will put a ton of miles on car so buying miles is expensive option. When we leased car plan was to buy outright sometime during lease.

1 see if they will swap for a new one
2 use for the lease and then turn it in (usually you can buy more miles)
3 break lease

I would complain to the maker and probably even post it on social media in some way since companies hate it and tend to do more that way. Even though I know this issue could just be a glitch and nothing, if I could I would get rid of it. It's not worth the stress when having little ones and being pregnant.

I would push hard for a new one too. I hope they have given you a loaner but in the mean time your brand new car hasn't been usable for a significant amount of time that you have "owned" it. I would be tempted to break the lease too if it turned out they really won't replace it.

Background: we leased a car with intent to purchase. Car has check engine light in the first 2500 miles and spent 15 days in shop (currently still in shop). We have owned car 2 months.

DH wants to give them another chance to fix car and then we will keep using car. This car is meant for road trips so will put significant mileage on car, not problem if we buy car. Issue is if it is a POS car and we return at end of lease.

My position- walk away now, break lease.

WWYD?

When I was younger I leased a Saturn that was a lemon in every way except on paper. I had it 3 years and it was in the shop 24 times for everything from the engine mounts to reprogramming the computer several times to the seats staining whenever water got on them. Getting it officially deemed a lemon is hard. GM paid 2 payments on it for me for the inconvenience but I turned it in early and ate the cost.

All that to say if it's already having issues I would see about getting rid of it, instead of dealin with the constant stress and headaches.

I owned a Toyota for 11 years that we bought used so it was 17 years old when we sold it. I never had any issues with it other than routine maintenance. The only reason we sold it was that it was a small 2 door car, and we wanted something bigger.

I drive a Hyundai now that we bought new 2 years ago. I have also never had any issues with this car.

It definitely sounds like you may have a lemon.

@gingerbebe: We don't care enough about having a Toyota to keep trying different dealerships. If the next repair fails it will be deemed a lemon and we will just get a different car.

@BandDmommy: I would try another dealer - that is really shocking to me. I'm big on customer service so if my dealer blew me off like that I would speak to a manager and get pretty pissy. Also, no Sienna requires special gas!

When I took it in first time they lectured me about what type of gas I was putting in (um, I'm not an idiot, I just bought car two months ago, I remember what you said) and then just reset the buttons without actually looking at the car.

@BandDmommy: I know two people who had BMW lemons and they went insane. One person had saved for a long time to get their dream car and it was just a total lemon and they were soooo upset. I guess when the BMW is a lemon it's like the worst - like not a subtle lemon but a hot mess.

@BandDmommy: Yes, the mechanic they go to (who solely works on BMWs) said that very, very occasionally he sees a BMW that is just a lemon. He said with BMWs there are either incredibly sound or they are not and he recommended they trade it off as soon as possible. In his career though he has only a handful of lemons and said my parents just got a lousy one. (It was an X5.)
