I just did a TON of research on this and settled on the BRITAX Grow With You seat. It transitions from harness to seatbelt but not to backless. We have used britax since he was a newborn and I like the clicktight feature and seatbelt install for the harness option. I also liked the high limits for the harness option. My 5 yo really loves his seat and says it’s comfy.

@BadgerMom: yeah so that's the issue...seated height 17 inches & I think current seat is 18.

DD has only about 1 inch I can pull when tightening her seat. The seat otherwise fits...has plenty of room....we have more height we can raise the headrest....but the strap is like 0 slack.....

I echo @catgirl: about harness height. When I was looking to move on from our Britax boulevard I found out that they had just as high of a harness height as all the FF harness seats on the market so moving to a FF harness didn’t gain us anything. That was a few years ago now, so there may be more on the market these days.

I think this is a great pace to start:
https://csftl.org/recommended-seats/#combination

It will really depend on their sizes what seat would be best. Pay attention to harness heights, that’s how many kids outgrow forward facing seats.

How are they outgrowing their current seats?

I sold two of mine on FB Marketplace! They were in great shape and went quickly. I did a little research first by looking at other seats for sale on the site and posted similar pics and information. I priced on the low end of what others were asking for the brand (Britax) and they were gone within about 6 hours.

We took our infant seat to walmart when they were doing a trade in, put the bases on facebook for free for others to use at target for the trade in (they were expired which I was very clear about), and gave our two convertibles to a friend.

I think it's fine to sell or give away if you know they haven't been in an accident or checked on a plane, and if you have followed all cleaning and installation requirements from the manual. If not you can hold on to them for the next target trade in. Reach out to a fire station or CPST to see if they need them for demonstration purposes. Or see if local high schools use the electronic babies and could use seats (if it's a bucket style).

What did you do with your old car seat? We've missed Target's latest trade in back in Sept., and ours still looks brand new and has never been in an accident. I hate to throw it away, but it looks like neither Goodwill or the Salvation Army take them, and I don't have someone to give ours to. What did you do?

@nutmeg36: Yes, I have a Britax Marathon Clicktight in my car. I don't have center latch like my husband's truck does, so I wanted something that would be easy to install in the center with a seatbelt. The Clicktight is easier to install than the Contender, but I miss having the cup holder when we're in my car.

We have a contender that mostly stays in the baby sitters car. I like it! It's easy install and light. It's not overly padded and hot (we live in FL so this is important for us). I am not sure about fitting in smaller cars as we have only had it in larger vans/SUV.

We have a Contender in my husband's Honda Ridgeline truck. We have it in the center position, and it fits well. It's not hard to install or anything, but it does require a good bit of effort and pulling the strap in just the right direction to get the latch installation tight. (I think there are videos of this online.) Overall we've been happy with it.

We were very generously gifted a Graco Contender carseat for Christmas for my DD. Does anyone have any experience with the car seat (good, bad, ugly)? Reviews online are favorable, but I don't know anyone with the seat IRL.

Additionally, I drive a Mazda3, which has a very narrow backseat. Getting a new car is not a feasible option at this point. Does anyone happen to know if this carseat will fit (rear-facing) comfortably? We put her infant seat in the middle, but ideally I'd love to put her behind me so it's not so hard getting her in and out (I'm about 85% sure this won't be possible until she's forward facing, which is years away).

ETA: Asking the question because we need to purchase a 2nd seat for my husband's car (she rides in both cars pretty frequently). If the Contender won't fit in my car, it will certainly in his (Pontiac Vibe), so we can do something different for mine.
