@Kemma: The cereal is just rice.
@regberadaisy: I am thinking of just skipping cereal too. My toddler loves the cereal.
@avivoca: I haven't tried pouches with him. Perhap that might go better.

I think we just may hold off on more solids for a little while longer.

H really didn't get into solids until closer to 8 months. I worried a lot, but she was growing fine on mostly breast milk. Have you tried food in pouches and letting him suck it out?

It's possible he's not ready yet, not all babies are by 6 months.

But if he likes fruits and vegetables just fine I would skip cereal. There's no real need for cereal Imo.

@MrsRcCar: could there be an ingredient in the cereal that's causing the vomiting? Or maybe it's just too much starch? At least you know he's getting all the good stuff he needs from the breastmilk :-)

Fwiw Miss A didn't really get into food until much closer to a year, she didn't want to eat off a spoon but she was happy sucking on finger foods - even if she didn't really digest anything!

@Kemma: We may have to try him on banana or avocado. I am just a little worried. N was such an excited eater and boy are these boys different. Plus a little alarming to me that he promptly vomits the cereal up.

So here is another feeding post from me. Sorry in advance.

E is 7.5 months old 6.25ish months adjusted. He nurses awesomely and is gaining just fine. However we were encouraged to give solids a go. The first time E had cereal it all came back up, I thought it was a fluke, as he does spit up often. However every time he has cereal he throws it back up. (Legit vomit) Not to mention when he is eating it he just lets it roll around in his mouth. He seems to do ok with plain fruit and veggie purées as long as they are kinda thick. Some problem with it just rolling around in his mouth. He doesn't seem to be excited for food. E seems interested in our food and his brothers food but he isn't excited in his own.
I guess I am just wondering if perhaps we are having some feeding issues due to his premature arrival. He was also tongue and lip tied.
Any suggestions?

We started oatmeal mixed with breastmilk at 5 months and we did it as part of starting solids. It did not help my son sleep better. You should do what you are comfortable with, not what everyone else thinks.

As a desperate single first time Mom with DS I started around 3 months trying to get him to sleep more. He was up almost every 2 hours still! My family pushed me into it. It didn't help his sleep at all. It also didn't hurt him but this I will wait since it was pointless to start so soon.

I think you know your child best. Don't let your family guilt you into starting early!

We had the opposite situation. DS had been showing signs of readiness for solids since he was about 3 months, but we were trying to hold off until 6 months, per our doctor's recommendation. DS kept increasing his daily food intake, though, and he added extra night wakings just to eat. He's always been a big eater, but when he increased his daily intake by 10 ounces a day for over two weeks, we finally decided to just start solids already. We started oatmeal last week (at 5 months) and his sleep did improve because he stopped needing as much formula in a 24 hour period. He's a monster at eating solids, too; he'll literally eat a huge bowl of oatmeal and a container of veggies every day, and he cries when he finishes because he wants more!

I think we should have started him sooner. I knew he was hungry, and I knew he was ready, but we were trying to do it "the right way." Anyway, you know your baby and you should trust your instincts. Don't start until you think he's really ready for it. :)

E is 14 weeks now and for the last few weeks has not been sleeping as well at night as he used to. He used to only wake up around 3am to eat, but now he's added a wake up at 11pm and sometimes around 5am. At first I attributed this to a growth spurt, but the spurt has passed and he's still waking up hungry at 11.
My MIL and SIL keep saying I should start feeding him cereal. My SIL gave her LO cereal at an insanely young age, we're talking between 1 and 2 months. Even the daycare teachers have suggested we try to feed him cereal. He is EBF now and I'd ideally like to wait on solids until he's 6mo and skip cereal altogether, I really think this sleep regression is just a phase. With all this outside influence I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with DH though.
If you fed your LO cereal, when did you start? And did you do it to get them to sleep better at night?

with the girls I nannied, I'd definitely suggest starting with the "yucky" ones and keeping the better til later! They might never accept the yuckers if they know there are sweeter things available.

On the other hand, my nephew is 2.5 in Jan, and still not eating. they thought he was just picky when they introduced solids, but now they have a team of early intervention specialists trying to figure out what is going on. he'll only eat broth.

I'm going to make homemade rice cereal (cooked white and brown rice pureed then mixed with breastmilk). The recipe is from weelicious.

I'm not concerned that rice cereal can be seen as a filler. Nutrition from solids isn't a priority at this point. In the very early stages, I just want DD to get used to eating with (and through baby led weaning, without) a spoon and experimenting with different textures and flavors. Both white and brown rice will mix well with breastmilk as far as taste goes so I'm thinking it's a great first food. It's also, culturally, an important food in my family so i think it's a good food to start off with! Other foods can be first too, but my baby is definitely going to be eating rice at some point, so it works for us to start off with it :)

We tried cereal (organic, brown rice since its healthier) and my baby ended up being one of the lucky ones that has some sort of allergy to it. Poor baby, it made him vomit like crazy!

He's 8 months now and I started with sweet potatoes, peas, etc. but he hates everything. I've tried fruit out of desperation and still no luck. I don't know why, but my LO really HATES food...he throws full on fits and spits everything out no matter how many different tricks we've tried. I hope you'll have better luck than we are!
