@Ajsmommy:
They turned out good! I was going to share a before/after but just realized I never took an after pic. I used paint+primer black spray paint in satin, distressed the edges, and then did a clear coat. BUT - DH did the clear coat in the garage and when he opened the door, the temperature change made the finish bubble  . It's okay because it just adds to the distressed look, but not ideal.

Your set looks really nice! Looks like a true set!

@Foodnerd81: Thanks! Buying the paint today so I'll check out all my options for spray with paint/primer, and the clear gloss.

@Ajsmommy: Flat sounds like it would be similar to the matte chalk paint at least. Don't worry about checking, I'm buying the paint this afternoon. Thanks!!

@josina: I did a diy chalk paint on a wood bed frame- you mix latex paint with calcium carbonate, I think. But now that I think of it we did spray paint some chairs and I sanded the edges and that worked fine too. I bet you could use regular spray paint and you only want to sand/ distress the edges. Then we used a clear spray top coat. Make sure to buy one with paint and primer in one can then I’d do a separate top coat. And start with one and see how it goes. If there are a lot of spindles the spray will probably be easier.

@Foodnerd81: That is what I'm thinking is chalk paint - I think it adhere's better? And then sanding the edges. Some of the chalk spray paint I looked at those doesn't even come in black, so I wasn't sure if I could just get away with regular spray paint.
I've never sealed anything before, but did read to use the polyacrylic. Thanks for the tips!
@Ajsmommy: What kind of paint did you end up using? That's my biggest thing now is deciding between a regular semi-gloss/satin or doing the chalk paint.

Oh- to add to my comment about chalk paint- most chalk painters seem to seal with wax, but for a high use item like chairs I would choose a flat or satin finish polyurethane or polycrylic.

Nice, I am working on redoing my old vanity to match my new bedroom furniture. I was going to distress it and use white chalk paint and the black wax stuff but I decided to just paint mine to match and it looks like they scuffed the edges of mine with sand paper so that's what I plan to do. So sorry, not really much help bc I basically took a drawer of my dresser to lowe's and had them match it. I'll paint the vanity and then hit it with a little sand paper and be done.

Have you youtubed how to refinish or distress furniture? That's what I would do if I were you

@josina: if you want them to be distressed, have you looked at chalk paint or milk paint? Chalk paint will give you the distressed look if you sand those spots, but for seats I think you would need a good sealer after. I’ve never used real chalk paint though so I can’t speak from experience.

I just bought some solid wood dining chairs to replace our current set (with cushions that our kids repeatedly destroy).

I already deglossed and sanded them, with plans to paint them black....

Best advice for how to paint them / what kind of paint to use / any sort of clear finish?? Help!
I do want to distress them so some of the wood shows through so I'm thinking primer is a no-go?

Personally I would go with a neutral love seat and get some pillows in a fun pattern (like the one on the first chairs) to tie in the red.

Maybe something like this https://beta.westelm.com/products/everett-upholstered-loveseat-g809

ETA: and I really like the styling they have in the 2nd picture. It ties in some burgundy and that frame in the back looks like it might be greenish

I just went solely off of the shape of your chairs and found a loveseat. I guess it depends on the size and shape of the room you want to put it in. Pottery Barn has a 20% entire site coupon (FRIENDS), and it works on the furniture too. This one in particular is special order, so it wouldn't be instant gratification. The discount basically covers your taxes and shipping (almost).

Anyone with design skills want to help me try to figure out our living room? We have two cranberry-colored chairs style like the red chair photo, and I'm thinking of adding an additional two chairs to create a central sitting area, but I don't know where to start as far as what would look good together.

The cranberry color isn't my favorite anymore, but these chairs are super comfortable and we love sitting in them, so even though it's a bit awkward, I would like to keep them.

Our walls are a light gray and there is a visible pale green accent wall from this room, to muddy it up further. Floors are darkish wood.

Option 1: Two colorful upholstered accent chairs: https://www.hayneedle.com/product/dorel-living-teagan-accent-chair.cfm

Option 2: Two light gray accent chairs:
https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/turn-on-the-brights-avah-armchair-w001468496.html?piid=1793508099

Option 3: Nailhead trim accent chairs:
https://www.ashleyfurniture.com/p/engineer-accent-chair/A3000030.html?cgid=living-room-chairs#start=6

Option 4: Woven accent chairs:
https://www.ethanallen.com/en_US/shop-furniture-living-room-chairs-chaises/jaymes-woven-lounge-chair/132510.html#start=1

Feel free to tell me I'm going the wrong direction here too (but I will probably cling to my comfy non-matching cranberry-colored chairs til death do us part...)

We have the Ikea Mammut chairs and just paired them with a lack table we already owned. the chairs are surprisingly sturdy when i sit on them but not very comfy. the matching table is cute too

We have this Richard Lampert desk. It was expensive, but it is adjustable all the way up to a full size adult desk (my tall husband can sit at it comfortably when at the full height). We have an ikea bench to go with it, but when the LOs are older, maybe we will get nicer chairs.

We have the Sudvik Ikea table in black, along with the matching chairs. It looks nice in our living room and seems much sturdier than the cheaper ikea table set (the one that's $19.99 for the table AND chairs).
