With my first I used a change pad with a cover all the time for about 8 months until he was too wiggly to stay on the dresser.

My second has never, ever (not even once!) been changed on a change pad  I just change her on the floor or on our bed!

@Goldengirl:
I have a pad similar to the first link, amd then 2 fitted sheet cover type things. We ended up getting a couple packs of pee pee pads from the pet store and would keep a pee pad over the changing pad. Our daughter was so good at peeing when you take her diaper off, and it took months before my husband got the hang of setting a clean diaper under the baby before you take the old one off. It was way easier to have the water proof disposable pads.

A lot of people I know say they never even used changing pads, but we have back problems and the changing table saved my back (or what is left of it)

We have a changing pad, a BUNCH of covers (we don't have a laundry machine in our apt so only do laundry about once a week, and we went throguh those FAST in newborn days--2 would never have been enough for us since we could go through that many in a day if she had a lot of blowouts), and for those early days we also used boppy-brand liners that we could handwash in the bathroom. every diaper bag we've gotten has come with a travel pad so we use that when out and about.

We just use a pad and a cover. Cover gets washed every few days. we have 3 covers, 2 would be sufficient though.

Fwiw, I change wherever I am but DH likes to change on the pad. Now that I have a toddler though all poops are changed their - it's just too gross to do it elsewhere!

I used 1, 2, and 4, in that order, bottom to top. 1 you need, 2 is for looks/fashion/to tie in with your colour/theme (so not 100% necessary), and 4 has been suuuuper convenient for those times when the baby messes. Which happens a lot at first. The back is waterproof and the front is terry cloth/cotton, so it's nice against the baby's skin. We bought six (2 packs) and were rotating them out really frequently for the first several months. Using them keeps the cover (2) clean and you rarely need to wash it. We wash ours every couple of weeks or less. We also only bought one. That setup might not work for everyone, but it's what we found to be the best for us.

We still use the changing table exclusively at 16 months. LO even lays there to get dressed in the mornings when he's still pretty calm.

@Goldengirl: Not sure about other people but I ALWAYS changed LO on the diaper changing table. It is so much easier there since everything is set up there and if it gets messy then the mess is contained to one area

@MaryM: Haha yes he's surprisingly been like that about a few things (like getting a diaper pail!). I think it's because I do research all day so I know there are acceptable alternatives, but he just sees what his siblings/friends/other people do and think it's the right way. I've learned it's not worth arguing about the smaller things

@Goldengirl: Your husband sounds like my mom. I was going to put a pad on top of a dresser instead of buying a piece of furniture for the sole purpose of putting a poopy kid on, and she basically threw a fit. (But I still don't plan to buy a changing table when we have a million acceptable surfaces in our house!)

I use this changing pad on top of my changing table.

https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-4-Sided-Changing-Pad/dp/B001MS83OE/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1469650425&sr=1-5&keywords=changing+pad

I have two covers so its soft like this one.

https://www.amazon.com/American-Baby-Company-Heavenly-Contoured/dp/B00I0MDZ8Y/ref=sr_1_11_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1469650523&sr=1-11&keywords=changing+pad+cover

I then use these multi-use pads on top of the cover so I don't have to wash the cover if I get poop on it. Plus, with twins, one is always spitting up.

https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Waterproof-Multi-White/dp/B004GJXM06/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1469650612&sr=1-2&keywords=multi+use+pads

Almost everything except for the changing pad was bought from a fellow twin mom. She just gave me a bunch of blankets and such and the multi-use liners were included. If I didn't have them, I would use receiving blankets that was given to me that are hardly ever used. I don't think I would buy those multi-use pads.

ETA: oh, with DH's bad back, the changing table was needed for us. Plus, we live in a rancher type home (only one floor) so its easy to go back to the nursery to change their diapers. We also are cloth diaperers and use cloth wipes in a wipe warmer. Everything is around the changing table so its convenient.

Babies are getting very squirmy and I've had to use the floor for changes but DS hit his head on the crib floor posts. I started using the changing table today and they seem to be not as squirmy... maybe they just needed a change of scenery.

I wouldn't bother with the liners- I liked to pile the changing pad with "liners" but I used burp cloths, prefolds and receiving blankets, whatever was already lying around. So I had one pad, one cover and if the cover was in the wash id just use the cloths/prefolds to cover the plastic in the meantime.

My mom bought a piece of PUL and sewed it around an old dish drying mat (for a tiny bit of cush). It's wipe-able and a decent size. We're on our second kid with it now. We change him on top of the washer until he starts rolling, then on the floor. I really think changing pads are a waste of money, but to each his own.

We use a changing pad plus a cover/fitted sheet type thing. You can use it without but mine has some perforations that's could be annoying to clean. Plus the soft cover seems like it would feel nicer. I used the liners with my first because she would pee or poop when the diaper came off almost every time, so we had six liners but two covers- just cut down on the laundry. I also would keep one in my bag or car or whatever.

My second baby hardly ever poops or pees on the changing table so we don't bother with the liners. But I bought this wipeable changing pad cover and I love it! Little messes I just wipe up, bigger messes i wash it. But it looks like it's only sold in target and I saw you are in Canada.

We only have #3. I knew from experience as a nanny that I prefer changing diapers on the floor to traditional changing tables. When kiddo was a newborn I used the bassinet attachment of the pnp as a changing table, with the portable changing may under baby. Around 3 months, I started doing all diaper changes in the living room, on the floor, with the changing mat tucked under baby. Now I don't even bother with the mat.

Granted, we didn't have T until he was 6 months, but he is and has been far too mobile and uncooperative for a changing pad. We also use a blanket on the floor. I just don't feel safe with him on any raised surface. He's so fast and strong when he flips over. O seems different, much happier to lay quietly for changes even at 8 months, but I still don't really see the necessity of a pad.

Someone bought us a set that included two fitted covers and two changing pads. It was a good amount for the newborn days when poop got everywhere. I could just take the changing pad off and not worry about the fitted cover. Although after a few months it wasn't worth bothering with the pads.

@oliviaoblivia: Yes I have a pad for when friends are over 😂
It wasn't until adulthood that I realized our culture doesn't sit on the floor nearly as much as my family does so I know this seems weird to some people, but it feels easier to me!
