Any progress? We're going with straight up disposables, and some gdiapers with the disposable inserts (and maybe some cloth inserts just in case...)

Have you looked into Gro-Via? They only use 3 grams of SAP compared to the ~10 grams other companies use. The insert can be flushed. They make both the hybrid diaper system with a cloth cover and a regular disposable diaper. You also might be able to save buy purchasing them from places like Alice.com, diapers.com and Costco.

I like them and haven't had problems with them. I've been using them 2weeks now. I've never read any reviews on them, but will go check them out just to see what others say. I was thinking they are the same price as what ppl pay for disposables per month anyway, especially since they use them 24/7. I think I might ask a mom at my daughter's daycare to see.

@MsMamaBear: How do you like Honest diapers? It looks like a great system and the price seems comparable to other "natural" diaper brands, but there are mixed reviews online from what I could find.

@OhApostrophe (& @Lozza): I would love to take you up on that offer to meet up--although I think we've finally reached a compromise in our household so the cloth demo might not be necessary. I think we've landed on gdiapers hybrids! I'm okay with the disposable liners, especially for being out and about (because I always figured we'd use disposables for that anyway and just do cloth at home), and even though they have "super absorber" in them (since I won't be using them all the time), and Hubs thinks we won't be "washing poop in the washing machine." Little does he know, right? ;-) We'll use a good combo of cloth and the disposable liners--I love that there is a choice!

But yes, if you're still interested in a local meet up, I would still love to learn more about your cloth diapering system and generally say hello!

@eastportbride Are there any stores or parent groups in your area that will do a cloth diaper demo? I know that in our area, there's a store that does these "Cloth Diapering 101" sessions where a few CD-ing moms break out all the different types of diapers and demonstrate how they work, they talk about the poop and smell issues, storage, fit, benefits and disadvantages of each type, etc.... One of the local CD delivery services will also come do a home consult and show you their diaper options, and there's another CD-centric forum in our area that hosts occasional informational/social gatherings. So if you poke around a bit on the internet, you may be able to find ways to introduce your DH to how it all works and people who do it.

@eastportbride: Ha! It's a pretty minor and reversible alteration! We ordered ours online; I like Cotton babies and Kelly's Closet. Both have good return policies and free shipping. If I were to do it over again I'd do a newborn diaper rental program (and get the bumgenius AIO extra smalls) for the first couple of months.

@ohapostrophe: we're having a girl. :-)

Funny you should mention the sprayer--his first reaction after reading your post was "they altered their toilet!" I had to explain that it is really common to do that, and technically you should probably do that even if you are using disposables because you should be getting rid of the poop in the toilet before disposing of the diaper. (I understand that doesn't really work before eating solids) But the only folks that he knows who change diapers all use disposables and he's skeptical about bucking the trend. Maybe we need to go shopping for some cloths and see if seeing it in person makes something click. Did you order all of your BumGenius online, or did you find them locally?

@eastportbride: is his concern that the washer (that washes his clothes too) will be dirty? Babies get pee/poop/vomit on other clothing items too! You can use a sprayer to get solids off of the diaper first, but IMO it's a waste of time with newborn breastmilk poo. Are you having a boy? Did you show him the article about disposable diapers trapping heat which is dangerous for boy parts? I had to show my husband the diaper itself and how it was going to work, then it was sort of like, oh, that's it? I do most of the laundry but he has definitely helped. Diaper changes are split 50/50 when we're both home...but he did every single one for the first week!

@ohapostrophe: we totally do--I would love that. I've sent hubs all of your (fabulous) cloth diapering posts, but he is still not quite there. Did get him to consider the gdiapers disposable inserts yesterday--but unfortunately that doesn't really resolve my concerns about SAP. It may just take some time. He's gone from saying he didn't know if he could change a diaper to now saying since he expects to be changing most of them, at least at first, while I am exhausted and nursing, so who knows. But he's totally grossed out by the idea of throwing cloth diapers directly into the laundry. I'm gonna keep working on him but if you've got tips and tricks for making the case I'd love to hear them!
