@T.H.O.U.: This is the fertility clinic that I worked with! (Not related to cancer survival, just because they have an office in my town). Glad to see this program getting some attention!

@Mrs.Someone: Yea! I don't think (thankfully) there are many ladies here impacted directly by cancer but I figured I'd post it in case someone googled this!

My survivor group just posted this and I thought I would share it here:

A recommendation from one of our Lymphoma Club members who writes: "Something I feel most people don't know about is a fertility rescue program. I was lucky enough to come across in my journey with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. I know people spend tens of thousands of dollars in an effort to preserve fertility before chemotherapy. Sher Institute of Reproductive Medicine (there are 6 in the U.S.) will do a cycle of IVF for FREE if you have cancer."

>>The link for more info is: http://haveababy.com/infertility-treatments/fertility-preservation/fertility-rescue/

I think there was also some discussion about possible free sperm/egg freezing for those starting chemo.

My brother was told the same thing as @Mae:'s when he underwent radiation treatments. They were also treating that area so I'm sure that would have had a direct impact on his fertility if they were still TTC (he had a vasectomy after their second almost 10 years before treatments).

DH's best friend had cancer and went through chemo.

I believer prior to chemo they cryopreserved his sperm.

They were a bit cautious when they started TTC and thought they would have trouble.

They got pregnant in 3 months and have a beautiful girl.

So there's hope!

I don't know much about it, but I wanted to send you some love. It sounds like something important to bring up with your doctor, at least as something that would be worthwhile to pursue.

Hoping for answers for you!

Thanks ladies. It is very extremely situation specific. I did have chemotherapy (ABVD) but luckily did not have radiation which seems to have a higher impact on IF.

I haven't experienced this but I know when my brother had radiation he was told that it could affect his fertility and he'd have to come in for a SA if he wanted to have kids and it didn't appear to be happening quickly.

I'm sure it is extremely situation-specific

It depends on the type of cancer treatment - they are probably referring to patients who have had chemotherapy (as opposed to cancer treated by surgical removal only). Many patients who have undergone prior chemo are able to conceive, but it can lead to infertility in some situations. It's probably best to talk to your OB about your specific situation to see if you need any testing prior to TTC.

I have no experience with this, but wanted to chime in to support you here. What type of treatment did you have?

It makes sense to me this would be listed--my friends who have had treatments for cancer talk about it being both a blessing and a curse. A blessing as it wipes out cancer, but a curse as it wipes out "good stuff" along with it.

I was just reading the definition of "infertility" on the mayo clinic site and I noticed that they suggest seeing a doctor for IF testing when you have had prior cancer treatment.

When to see a doctor
In general, don't be too concerned about infertility unless you and your partner have been trying regularly to conceive for at least one year. Talk with your doctor earlier, however, if you're a woman and:

You're age 35 to 40 and have been trying to conceive for six months or longer
You're over age 40, so you should begin testing or treatment right away
You menstruate irregularly or not at all
Your periods are very painful
You have known fertility problems
You've been diagnosed with endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease
You've had more than one miscarriage
You've had prior cancer treatment

Has anyone talked to their doctors about TTC, IF, and the connection to prior cancer treatments?
